Sunset in Toulon

An important naval base, its port is home to submarines and warships, as well as fishing boats and ferries. The large National Museum of the Navy, in the port of Toulon, exhibits maritime objects. Steep limestone peaks form the backdrop of the city. A funicular takes visitors to the summit of Mount Faron.

A little star trail I took out at Cana Island before I left for Alaska. One of my favorite places to shoot and for good reason. I will admit...it took me longer than it should have to get my Lume Panel to light this nice and evenly like this but it worked out pretty well in the end.

I'm working with the Mississippi Valley Conservancy to try and record and showcase the dark skies around the Wildcat Mountain region in Wisconsin. They are trying to be recognized as a national dark sky region. If successful it would be only the second one in Wisconsin. They have worked pretty extensively in the area to identify areas with light pollution then tried to address it by changing lights out or finding ways to make it better. From the sounds of it they still want to do a few more things but as you can see it's already incredibly dark. I stacked 6 consecutive images to create this image.

I took this last year when I was at Little Sable Lighthouse. This night was so incredible I know I will never forget it. Shooting the milky way in one direction and comet NEOWISE in the other. I literally couldn't take pictures fast enough for everything. Such an incredible memorable night.
Sometimes I sit back and think of all pictures I've taken. All the amazing places I've seen and been too. All the amazing people I've met along the way. All the amazing experiences I've had. All the incredible opportunities. It's all so incredible and surreal. Such an joyful ride for sure. I can't wait to see where/what/who the future holds.
I lit this side of the lighthouse with a Lume Panel from Lume Cube, took the picture with Foolography's Unleashed and if you look veeeeery closely you can see my other camera and tripod on the beach running a timelapse of come NEOWISE that would be behind me. ;)

Everyone else sees the cold temperatures as misery. I see it as an opportunity to do something I love....and that's take pictures. As you know I love night photography...but I also love macro photography too. Can't wait to share a few more of these!!
I'm shooting this on my knees, on our picnic table, lit with one of my Lume Cubes, 3 degree f weather and snowing. I can't imagine what people driving by thought....LOL

Red sided Gartersnake portrait.
It was getting dark when I photographed this snake and rather than put on my macro flash I decided to light it with a couple of lume cubes. I am still trying to figure out the best way to use them. I liked how this shot turned out.
I recently did some extreme social distancing with my son in the wilds of Kansas. We were able to turn up many reptile species and some good birds while staying far away from people. I will be posting photos from this trip for quite a while.
I hope all my flickr friends are staying safe and healthy.
I missed my mark by probably a foot....maybe I'll have to go back to this place. ;) This is lit with 2 Lume Cubes one on each side and shot with....

I've never been out shooting the night sky with my dad but have always wanted to. So, on a whim I thought, what the hell, I'll shoot him a text at 10:30 at night....turns out he couldn't sleep and made the trip to a really fantastic location. 😉

Loooong post.....I've been wanting to take pictures up here for quite a while. It's a short(ish) 3ish hour drive north for me so it's not too terribly far. As always the weather has not been cooperative at all so the timing of this wasn't quite what I had been wanting. But as you can see it worked out anyway.
I took this picture under the highway that passes by the mill. While under the bridge I saw an Amish man and his son on the other side of the creek. I went to the top of the bridge and met him up on top. He told me that his name was Herman and that he owned the mill. He said that he had bought the mill a few years back and had been restoring it. He just finished restoring the dam and the paddle wheel. I told him I was there to take some pictures and loved the mill. He said he would give me a quick tour inside and turn the mill on for me if I would send him some pictures when I was done. So, of course I said absolutely.
After a brief tour he showed us some things inside the mill and explained some future plans of things that he would like to do. One of them being he wanted to start grinding flour with the mill and making goods for the local community. You could tell from his enthusiasm just how proud of the mill he is. Which, to be fair, I would be too. It's a pretty awesome little mill. I couldn't believe how nice it was for being built in 1864. With his renovations and love for the mill I can't wait to see what ultimately becomes of it.
For the shot I am using a two Lume Cubes to light the mill and waterfall and I'm using my UNLEASHED to trigger my camera and lots of patience. I arrived at about 7pm and the milky way didn't come into alignment with the mill like this until about 1:30am. It was well worth it though...

While on my vacation I shot at the Bodie Island Lighthouse. This was most definitely some of the darkest skies I've ever shot the milky way in. I could see different colors in the milky way with my naked eyes. It was absolutely amazing. But, those very dark skies came with a minor cost....my blood....this is probably also the worst mosquitoes I have EVER seen in my life. I basically took a bath in Deep Woods OFF and they didn't even car. At one point I looked down and had 3 mosquitoes on my leg at one time. I will say that at this point it was well worth it....but if I die in the coming days from some mosquito carrying some sort of disease I would say it was still worth it...LOL
The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is absolutely amazing!! The dark skies are to die for! There is a tower just to the right of my frame which you can see the red glowing on the edge of it. I used two Lume Cubes to light the base and had a little luck with the clouds for this frame. The clouds moved in pretty quickly so I wasn't able to shoot it as much as I would of liked too but it was still an amazing night!!
It was originally built in 1802 but has since been rebuilt then moved from it's original spot. The ocean was only 15' from it's base and it would have been destroyed if they did not move it. I read on the back of a post card that it is quite possibly the most iconic lighthouse in the United States! If you ever happen to be in the outer banks of North Caroline I very highly recommend going out to see it! But, if you do, don't be like the 4 asshole people that jumped the fence to drink beer on the steps of it and leave your cans there. That's on another level of disrespectful and I wholeheartedly wish I had a picture of you guys that I could post for the world to see.....
Santa Claus pays a visit to the elves' club house to make sure that all the preparations for Christmas Eve are on schedule.
It's been a while since I have been down to Hyde Mill. But it's always such a treat to stop down there. I even had the opportunity to meet one of the family members that owns it. Super nice guy too! He couldn't believe what our cameras were capturing. I triggered this with my UNLEASHED. I'm using one of my Lume Cubes to light the scene. It was part of a timelapse but....I...apparently...lost...it....:'( This is only the second time I've ever lost files for a timelapse. (I guess that I know of...?) Both times it was from when I bought a new computer. So, I should be good for another 4 years I guess.

In a very very last minute trip I met up with Neal Grosskopf to go shooting. I tagged along on him for a trip he had planned out and let's just say everything seemed to work out pretty amazing. I took a couple "behind the scenes shots". Of course the best one was when he covered his camera to head over and shoot with the other one. LOL BUT, what an incredible freaking trip to say the least. I have a lot to dig through and edit now. ;)

Shooting bubbles out in the frozen climate somehow apparently makes it not seem so cold out. It was like 3 degrees f out and I was out for almost a hour shooting.

Here's a little something a couple friends and I took last night. This is Devils Doorway at Devils Lake Wisconsin. It's about a mile hike, basically straight up to get here. It was hot and humid but well worth the trip and effort. I weighed my camera bag today and it weigh 33.5 lbs. I thought I was packing light too...guess not so much. LOL

Here's another single shot of the Hatteras Lighthouse. I had to make quick work of shooting here because the clouds were moving in fast. I only had about 20-30 minutes of time to shoot the milky way before the clouds moved in. This lighthouse is pretty awesome though. It's so worth the drive out there if you are ever in the outer banks North Carolina. The grounds are very nice for shooting too. This might actually turn into my new desktop picture.

Another beauty from Cana Island in Door County Wisconsin. Such an absolutely incredible place. I have a Lume Cube camera right lighting up the entire lighthouse and the beautiful skies and lighthouse did the rest.

The life of a smuggler is not easy, but occasionally it had its moments. Like those times when you found a good hiding place and had a chance to be all by yourself. Just for a little while. In complete peace.
Sometimes Chewie would get up early, have a cup of coffee and enjoy the first rays of the rising Sun. Or Suns, depending on which galaxy they happened to be at. It was mornings like these that made the work all worth it. Han was such a late sleeper, he had no idea about the tranquil moments that he missed.
This week it's another portrait of Azari, this time taken at sunset during the summer for my blog post at @stuckinplastic about filling shadows with a @lumecube. In the meantime @lumecube is also running a toy photography contest in collaboration with @sgtbananas. (More info about it in my blog post at @stuckinplastic and lumecube.com/giveaways)
(I realized too late today is also Talk like a Pirate Day... Unfortunately no Elvish Pirate photo, but maybe Azari looks a bit like an Elvish Pirate with her hood and cape?)
My visit to the Alexian Brothers Novitiate went a little something like this. I must say it's an absolutely incredible place to be and shoot! There's a little bit more light pollution than I was expecting but it's not too bad though I was still able to get the milky way obviously! I wish I could see some pictures from when it was built back in 1939! I'm sure it was absolutely stunning! I was using a Lume Cube camera left and camera right to light this scene. Both had gels and a diffuser.
If you are interested in shooting here please contact the appropriate people! They are extremely easy to work with and it's helps keep this place here to be able to shoot!!

I shot this testing out an Irix 15mm Firefly. I setup a Lume Cube on the right side of the ruins to help illuminate them. Then setup my camera to shoot this. It's just over an hours time at just under 350 images taken. It was a whopping 5 degrees F outside so at least it wasn't cold....LOL

I have been waiting to put this timelapse together for quite some time now but was slightly limited by my old computer. I am so happy to finally be able to share these with you all. To me, astrophotography and timelapses are such an incredible thing. It's so peaceful and amazing sitting outside in the dark watching the beautiful night sky pass by over head. I can't even believe some of the stuff I have captured under the night sky's. I really can't thank some of you guys enough for the information you guys have learned and shared along the way. That has helped me immensely with my creativity as well. This is a compilation of most all new timelapses that I have not shared yet. So I really hope you all enjoy my latest work.
I have reduced the amount of motion I am using mainly because I am wanting to create star trails with my images as well. I can't make startrails with my images if I have my camera running on my slider. But, I will still do them in the future. ;)

One of the earliest Type-600 Polaroid Cameras and a great bridge between the SX-70 OneStep and the modern 600 cameras. Sharp Lines, Iconic Rainbow, and the clamshell design that would come to define the Type-600. The Polaroid Spirit might be old but can still output a great soft typical Polaroid image.

A strange little viewfinder camera from the 1940s, the Kodak Duex is a 620 'half-frame' camera that shoots in the 4.5x6 format. The Duex is the spiritual successor to the German-made Duo but has the little format and film type from the original camera. The Duex is one of the hundreds of cheap plastic consumer cameras that are strange, frustrating and just old. But it at least produces images!

When it comes to Point-And-Shoot cameras, the Pentax PC35AF is the first for Pentax. Bridging the gap from manual focus to Autofocus, the PC35AF takes a queue from Olympus with the clamshell design that makes the camera look like an updated XA. And despite all that, the camera can be frustrating, in poor weather, the AF and meter are easily fooled, and while there's a flash warning, the flash does not power on automatically. There are some other frustrations, but those I chalk up to age.

Hindsight 2020, last year was an unusual one, and a one that we will remember for a long time. It was a difficult year for many. Personally, I can’t really complain. It was a weird year for me with a lot of new adjustments, and I’m not even counting any corona related stuff here. But in the end, it looks like everything turned out really well. Nevertheless, in 2021 I’m looking forward to things getting back to normal, whatever that means these days.
This was done in a single shot. Has anyone ever used a Lume Cube before? I got one for Christmas and it's pretty much AMAZING! I wanted to try a few tests on it before I left the house for shooting and give it a real life test. I put it in water because it says it's water proof up to 100ft. You are also able to control them by your phone with an app. If you are a vlogger this would be perfect for you. 10 different modes of brightness, you can control the brightness with the app over bluetooth or by pushing one of the buttons on top. You can also use it as a flash. I'm pretty sure this has no limits!! ;)
You can find them here if you're interested.
