The lower falls in the Linville Gorge in western North Carolina. Fall colors were prevalent all around the surrounding mountains but the leaves were turning slowly at the bottom of the gorge.
Upper Linville Falls, North Carolina and No.3 from my trip.
Being that much smaller, the upper falls at Linville get a lot less attention than the main falls. And, probably like many people, I was in a hurry to get to one of the main overlooks and only spent a few minutes here.
But when I processed the photos I was struck by the beauty of the upper falls. The two side-by-side drops make for a slightly awkward composition, but with the upper falls you can get that much closer and explore in a way you can't with the main falls. This is one I'd definitely like to revisit.

Leaning against a small tree on a rocky outcropping, my palms getting sweaty and fighting the building anxiety in my chest due to acrophobia, I managed to get this shot looking north up the gorge. There are no guard rails or fences (which I like) so one needs to keep their wits about them. I managed 6 shots before I had to. get back from the precipice.

Wiseman's View hangs on the side of Linville Mountain allowing you at least 3 different rock platforms to view the gorge. The are beautifully carved out of the rock and there are steps down to each one. You could take your pix from the very top of the steps as there's nothing to abscure your view. A very easy walk on a paved path leads to the observation area. There is even a wheelchair ramp. Being there mid week meant we avoided the weekend tourist crowds which I am not a fan of. We had the place mostly to ourselves. There are trails all over the moountain side leading to other advantageous outcroppings, but I left those for exploring another time. That is the Linville RIver 2k feet below. A rocky, wild and beautiful river if a bit low now due to the lack of rain.
Lower Linville Falls, North Carolina.
After Upper Falls, no.4 had to be the main attraction - Lower Falls. Without a doubt the most dramatic view of my trip. This shot is from Plunge Basin Overlook.
We tackled the Pine Gap Trail with our pups in tow to reach the beautifully cool, clear waters of the Linville River at the bottom of the gorge. The trail was only a mile down the mountain but 324 feet of elevation recorded by Strava. The trail is not for the faint of heart. There are no safety rails and it's more like climbing/bouldering than hiking. Two unruly leashed pups and me with my camera gear on my back. Making the climb back up to the trailhead seemed easier than going down and got my heart rate up! Unfortunately, I missed capturing a heron that I looked up to see gliding down about 25 feet above the water. The sense of wonderment that washes over me when I see one of those magnificent birds is soul stirring. We relaxed on a huge flat rock while the pups enjoyed some swim time then rest before we hiked back up the mountain and found an empty campsite to cook our dinner.
This is another composition of Linville Falls from when I visited in early May. The photo was taken from the Gorge Overlook which is a short easy hike originating from the left side of the Visitors Center.

We had a very difficult hike to get to this area of the Linville Gorge, but the view was spectacular.
After a day of heavy low clouds, I finally got the break I needed for a decent photo. To appreciate the scale of this scene, notice the folks on the ledge above the falls. This photo is HDR bracketed.
Linville Falls
The beginning of Linville Gorge and the many cliffs along the slopes of both sides of the river until it spills out into the Catawba River Valley ten plus miles downstream. The Cherokees name for the Linville River was, "Eeseeoh," meaning "a river of many cliffs." A well suited name for such a rugged area…

From the summit of Shortoff Mountain, a beautiful day to be in the mountains. The color has reached the southern end of the gorge as many trees along the ridges along County Line Rd, (Old 105) are shedding their leaves. Still very beautiful fall scenery…

Thanks to Mike Koenig who clued me into this great photo op.
Linville Falls and blooming Carolina Rhododendrons are an unbeatable pair. Doesn't get much better than this. Lucked out with conditions. Got there just after a good rain and before the sun came back. Little wind and no people - who can beat that!!
