Eurasian pygmy owl, Glaucidium passerinum, varpuspöllö, Finland.
I first noticed the pygmy owl from car when passing by a small logging opening. Later I returned to the spot but the owl stayed far away in a tree all the time. A patient wait yielded no results.
As I was leaving I looked back and saw the owl finally coming down and stopping on a small bird feeder. There were no birds around so the owl was after voles which also like to visit under the feeder. To get to a better position I had to walk close by the owl. It was funny how its head slowly turned around as it followed my every step.
There has been a pygmy owl territory nearby for several years now. Their wistful sounds can be heard often there in spring evenings.
Eurasian treecreeper, Certhia familiaris, puukiipijä, Finland.
Some time ago a treecreeper started visiting an old tree in front of my window. But where was it disappearing without a trace? One day I followed it closely and indeed there was a very small crack in the tree. The bird would curl up there to find shelter at cold winter nights.
The treecreeper is not the showiest bird but still an essential part of our forest avifauna. The light reflective white throat and long and pointed bill help to find insects from tree holes. And the upperparts color even resembles tree bark. Nice adaptations to forest life!
