New York & Atlantic train RS40 heads east at CP Beth with cars for Winters Bros Waste Management at Lindenhurst Oct 14, 2024
After switching customers in Lindenhurst, RS-40 continues east on the Central Branch for Babylon where they will run around the train for the return trip west to Fresh Pond. A trip to the New York & Atlantic can be a frustrating experience as the traffic can be an absolute nightmare. But it seems to be the last place you can regularly shoot classic EMDs and position lights together in the Northeast. Both engines, NYA 271 and 156, have spent their entire career on Long Island as they were built for the LIRR in the mid 1970s.
As a steady rainfall pours out on Bethpage, the New York & Atlantic's RS40 road switcher scoots down the Ronkonkoma Branch towards Lindenhurst to work One World Recycling.
NYAR RS-40 heads through Bethpage in the vicinity of the old Grumman Plant and Airport, today with a pair of 1976 EMD classics. Lately, the 268 and PR20B 300 have held down this job and evening Mainline job RS-80, but the 271 has been swapped in for this trip.
Today, #1 on the roster has the usual One World Recycling cars, as well as a boxcar and centerbeam for Century Building Products, located on the same spur in Lindenhurst.
The afternoon of April 25, 2025 was spent chasing the RS40; NYAR’s daylight operation to One World Recycling in Lindenhurst.
Leading the return trip to Fresh Pond was the newly refurbished NYA 261 - seen here roaring beneath the signal bridge at BETH interlocking in its first week back on the road.
“That has to be the nastiest looking engine I’ve ever seen.”
That’s a comment from an LIRR employee I showed this image to on the day it was captured. LI 167, an unkept and malnourished looking MP15AC, drags a train of empties across the viaduct at Hicksville, NY. I could hear the sputtering of her engine from across town. She’s on her way to Wellwood Siding in North Lindenhurst, a base of operations for railroad maintenance in western Suffolk County.
While thunderclouds gather above the viaduct, a pair of refurbished old cars sit below - probably dating from when the E15s were in their prime.

A lone 1500 sits on the Wellwood siding in N. Lindenhurst, NY. She isn't seeing much action this afternoon - relegated to protect duty as DE30 passenger locomotives do the heavy lifting on the weekend Central Branch shuttles.
LIRR's RF work crew takes a monster consist west through Pinelawn National Cemetery, rustling the bright orange / red row of trees alongside the Main. They're heading from KO Yard (Ronkonkoma) to Wellwood (N. Lindenhurst) with 28 cars in tow.
RS41, a semi-daily NYA road job, crawls through the sprawling DIVIDE interlocking in Hicksville, where its two engines are framed by Pennsy-style pedestal signals.
Prolific close up of a Male American Bullfrog on the Hastings Lake Trail this afternoon. My reflection can be seen from his eye.

NYAR RS40 has completed switching at One World Recycling and Century Lumber in Lindenhurst, and is shown at Babylon in the midst of their runaround. This crew comes off the Central Branch just west of this point, cuts off their power, then runs around the train when there's a lull in the passenger trains. After this, they'll head back up the Central Branch and rejoin the Mainline at Beth Interlocking. PR20 #300 and GP38-2 #268 have been the power for the last few weeks.
Photograph taken of Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, and Henry "Hank" Johnson in Lindenhurst surrounded by awestruck fans on May 5, 1932 after dining with other teamates at Barnacle Bill's Restaurant at 127 East Montauk Highway.
These baseball heroes were no strangers to the Lindenhurst area. They would come to eat seafood at Barnacle Bill's and also fish off the docks adjacent to the restaurant on Neguntatogue Creek. One of their fishing friends.
Shot this from a drone relatively close to the windmill. Nervous flying is now all part of the photography experience and fun.
Train 8710 glides over the village streets of Lindenhurst NY, with LI 519 (with a Conrail logo underneath the engineer's window) taking point.
