You see how [Mount] Soracte stands out white with deep snow, and the struggling trees can no longer sustain the burden, and the rivers are frozen with sharp ice.

Travelling the Ligna Algarve is always enjoyable, but it does have its surprises. We were waiting for the train back to Olhão and, surprisingly, the train to VSRA arrived at the wrong platform.

So the people going that way had to cross the tracks and hustle. And they did it with gusto ;-)

This is number 38 of the Linha do Algarve album and 875 of People in the frame.

Just off the summit of Mt Niseko-Annupuri, during a snowstorm. Minus 20 degrees without the windchill, probably the coldest the Xpan has been. I’ve been warmer too.

Snow is a wonderful monochrome medium, everything reflects light, bar the rocks and trees. In film reversal negative, the trees glow in the darkness, lit by internal light, their shadows become radiant pools.

Europe, Portugal, Algarve, Sotavento, Tavira, Linha do Algarve, Ocean mist, Wind mill, Quinta's, Orchards, Santa Luzia, Water Castle (cut from all sides).

In winter, mornings in the Sotavento often start with a delightfully mysterious ocean mist (a bit like the Noordzee 'zeevlam'). In the bottom of the frame is the Linha de Algarve, Coming from Luz de Tavira the trackst have to climb to Tavira station), above that, are Quintas with their orchards and pastures. In the BG is Santa Luzia - on the left a new urbanization, on the right, under the water castle, shown here, is the barrio social.

Shot from the Tavira apartment.

This is number 22 of the Santa Luzia album and 20 from Ligna do Algarve.

Let's revisit the Sotavento portfolio, it almost feels nostalgic now. Also because in this guise, the depicted trains are lone gone from the CP rail network.

They’re DMU-2 (UDD-2 in CP parlance) diesel(-hydraulic) multiple units) of the 400 series of CP (Comboios de Portugal), built in 1981 by the Portuguese Sorefame (Sociedades Reunidas de Fabricações Metálicas) company in licence of the Budd company of Philadelphia USA. These DMU’s were the mainstay of CP’s Algarve fleet.

After a renovation in 1999, they became the 450 series that’s currently in operation on amongst other the ‘Ligna do Algarve’, the Algarve rail link between VRSA and Lagos.

This is number 24 of the Linha Algarve and 208 of the Sotavento one.

Celtic language , bridge or Brivas said Brig. There has been on this site a Gallic wooden bridge likely.

A Roman road called "path Bollène" linked Lyon to Bordeaux via Feurs Saint -Paulien , Javols , Rodez , Cahors and Agen. The Romans built a stone bridge to replace the Gallic bridge so that route to cross the Loire.

The bridge is mentioned in the early thirteenth century. A document dated 1367 denominates the "Bridge Floor" bridge. It is therefore likely that by that date the deck was wooden. He is certified as a toll crossing defended by a fortified house.

It originally consisted of five arches, but an ark was carried away by a flood between 11 and 12 November 1790 This arch was replaced by a ramp. The bridge "is now crossing for cars and cattle."

The current bridge has been rebuilt in the fifteenth century masonry. He still continued to be called "Floor bridge" until the eighteenth century. The ark and its left bank abutment were destroyed in a 1907 flood of September 21, 1980 won the right bank access ramp.

A diesel multiple unit (a 'UDD 0450' in CP parlance), the mainstay of the Linha do Algarve of the Faro-VRSA service, where it crosses the Faro marina. It's a generation younger then the one that's portrayed here: here. They were built in 1965 and 1966 (then the 400 series) and renovated in 1999, both by SOREFAME. They’re equipped with two 14 L 6 cylinder Cummins NTA 855 - R3 engines (Total output: 2 x350 kW)

This is number 11 of the Ligna Algave series: here.

Europe, Portugal, Algarve, Sotavento, Tavira, Estação CP, UDD 450, Passengers (very slightly cut)

Displayed here are two coupled diesel multiple units (UDD's in Comboios de Portugal (CP), parlance) of the 0450 series, the mainstay of the Linha do Algarve (the VRSA - Lagos service). Built in 1965 and 1966 (then the 400 series) and renovated in 1999, both by SOREFAME. They’re equipped with two roaring 14 L 6 cylinder Cummins NTA 855 - R3 engines (Total output: 2 x380 kW)

Two years ago Portuguese filmmaker (Miguel Cosme) with some expats from the UK made a movie, starring an O450 UDD on the Ligna do Algarve.

The filmed was titled The Algarve Diesel Maiden here …and, a bit sadly, was targeted at the electrification of the line and the taking out of service of these charming diesel trains because of their exhaust gasses. It’s a kinda silly movie. Both in content and target. In the Sotavento, the Ligna do Algarve runs parallel to the traffic dense (and diesel rich) EN125 high way. The abolition of the 'Diesel Maidens' won't make a real difference. Though from an operational point of view, electrification of the Linha do Algarve would be beneficial.

This one is captured with a delightfully optically flawed and fun little lens, the Olympus 9mm f/8 Fisheye Body Cap lens. It's entirely manual, just transfers light to the body, nothing else. And how great it is to photograph 'the old way',

This is number 18 of the Linha Algarve and number 76 of the Tavira album.

In the Ligna arcade, the most striking feature is the typical mosaic logo of the Tesla company. In 1949, František Hudeček created the famous advertisement for the Tesla company, which dominates the entire space and showcases the elegance of advertising at that time.

A fiery spiral of colours, stars and circles, resembling a cosmic galaxy, in the middle of which shines the logo of one of the most famous Czechoslovak brands. The rising sun, penetrating through the glass, cast subtle colourful reflections on the floor. Tesla was once a symbol of progress, but its story is also the story of a time when the communist regime took away people's businesses and built state monopolies. Originally a private brand, Elektra, founded in the 1920s, was simply confiscated after 1946 and renamed Tesla - ironically in honour of a man who had fought all his life against the centralisation of power over electricity. Yet Tesla became synonymous with Czechoslovak electronics. Under this brand name, cutting-edge products were produced - radios, televisions, gramophones. The mosaic in the Ligna arcade is a silent reminder of this era. Its coloured glass is interspersed with motifs of stars, waves and concentric circles, which may refer to the principles of radio waves, electricity or the universe itself.

The very last couple of shots from this late summer evening. There was a fence in the way, but I sort of leaned the tripod over it. You photographers know how it works. I rarely do this kind of vignetting... I don't know. It seemed like the thing to do in this case.

Part I – Part II

The most striking features of theSvetozor passage are the typical Tesla mosaic logo and the glass roof, which lets light into the passage. The advertising mosaic by František Hudeček fills the space with colourful light.

The Světozor passage in the very centre of Prague has been connecting Vodičkova Street and the Franciscan Garden since 1947. It is located in the original palace of the Czech Bank today Palac Ligna.

LIGNA: Transient Radio Laboratory

Wednesday, 30th of May 2007, ca. 4:15 pm-5pm on FSK 93,0 fm in the

inner city of Hamburg. The program is in english. Enjoy!

Considering the last days of police domination in the streets of

Hamburg and the factual impossibility to demonstrate in the inner

city, the free radio station FSK, 93,0 fm, invites to a radioballet

in the inner city of Hamburg. During the move Beat Capitalism! FSK

broadcasts LIGNA’s Transient Radio Laboratory. Every listener could

explore the effect of dispersed, deviant gestures in the homogenized

shopping zone of Hamburg’s inner city. The program protests against

depolitization and control of public space. The Transient Radio

Laboratory produces a new uncontrollable situation – parodying the

paranoia that rules the public space right now. So, beat

commodification, listen to the radio!

Dispersed deviant behaviour is for free!

Czechoslovakian made tremolo harmonica. Beautiful colours. Produced in four different colour combinations.

A short history of Wenceslas Square

In 1348, Bohemian King Charles IV founded the New Town of Prague. The plan included several open areas for markets, of which the second largest was the Koňský trh, or Horse Market (the largest was the Charles Square[2]). At the southeastern end of the market was the Horse Gate, one of the gates in the walls of the New Town. During the Czech national revival movement in the 19th century, a more noble name for the street was requested. At this time the statue was built, and the square was renamed.

On 28 October 1918, Alois Jirásek read the proclamation of independence of Czechoslovakia in front of the Saint Wenceslas statue. The Nazis used the street for mass demonstrations. During the Prague Uprising in 1945, a few buildings near the National Museum were destroyed. They were later replaced by department stores.

On 16 January 1969, student Jan Palach set himself on fire in Wenceslas Square to protest the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Soviet Union in 1968.

On 28 March 1969, the Czechoslovakian national ice hockey team defeated the USSR team for the second time in that year's Ice Hockey World Championships. As the country was still under Soviet occupation, the victory induced great celebrations. Perhaps 150,000 people gathered on Wenceslas Square, and skirmishes with police developed. A group of agents provocateurs provoked an attack on the Prague office of the Soviet airline Aeroflot, located on the street. The vandalism served as a pretext for reprisals and the period of so-called normalization. In 1989, during the Velvet Revolution, large demonstrations (with hundreds of thousands of people or more) were held here.

Wenceslas Square is lined by hotels, offices, retail stores, currency exchange booths and fast-food joints. To the dismay of locals and city officials, the street is also a popular location for prostitutes to ply their trade late at night. Many strip clubs exist on and around Wenceslas Square, making Prague a popular location for stag parties.
