Our media server is going to be working extra hard this morning as KU fans wake up and hit the videos and photo galleries.

Lighty hasn't broken a sweat yet though (knock on wood).

Mount Cuba is a botanical garden and the former home and family estate of Lammot du Pont Copeland (great-great-great grandson of the DuPont Company founder) and his wife, Pamela Cunningham Copeland. In 1935, the Copelands built a stately Colonial Revival manor house near the village of Mt. Cuba, outside of Wilmington, Delaware. The Copelands were prominent members of the community. Mr. Copeland served as President and Chairman of the DuPont Company, while Mrs. Copeland was a leader in many community and cultural organizations. During the late 1930s, formal areas were designed first by the prominent Philadelphia landscape architect Thomas W. Sears and later, in the 1950s, by noted landscape designer Marian Cruger Coffin.[2]

In the 1960s, the Copelands were becoming acutely aware of a changing land ethic and they became more interested in ecology and the need for conservation. Mrs. Copeland, in particular, was increasingly concerned about wildflowers and the impact on them by development and unscrupulous practices. In response, landscape architect Seth Kelsey was hired to develop the woodland wildflower gardens with native plants, design their ponds, and plan many woodland garden paths.

In 1983, Dr. Richard Lighty was hired by the Copelands as their first Director of Horticulture. The Copelands expanded their horticultural endeavors to study native plants of the Appalachian Piedmont, the beginnings of a botanic garden on a private estate. That same year, Mr. Copeland passed away. In the late 1980s, Mt. Cuba Center began hosting visitors by offering docent-led tours during the spring. Mt. Cuba Center horticulturists also began documenting their increasingly diverse native plant collections.

In 2001, Mrs. Copeland died. Mt. Cuba Center was no longer a botanic garden on a private estate but a public garden for all to be inspired about native plants. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

Sesión previa de cumpleaños en jardín

my daily cup of tea, on a sunny morning (even if it doesn't look very lighty).

today was a fantastic day! a friend of mine and me decided to turn today into our personal "cake-day", to set a goal to reach after an exhausting day of school, also to set some kind of memorial to our paris-trip in february. we spoilt ourselves with a visit to a super-cute french-style-bistro in the city (I've passed it a million times and always wanted to go inside sometime - today I finally did!) and got real good coffee and cake, well, actually I got a delicious tarte au citron (sadly, I didn't have my camera with me - reminds of how I should carry it around more often). that bistro (btw: www.lebol.at) must be one of my favourite places now! afterwards we went to a park and sat in the sun - today it felt like summer outside. we had real good conversations - so the day turned out to be almost perfect!

so, turn a day into a "cake-day" and everything has to be just fine at the end of it.

Our Christmas tree with the lighty-uppy bits. Each year we buiild a Christmas tree out of LEGO. It's a nice alternative to a planty one!

Mt. Cuba started as the vision of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lammot du Pont Copeland, who began acquiring land near Wilmington, Delaware in 1935, and completed construction of their Colonial Revival house in 1937. During the late 1930s, formal areas were designed first by the prominent Philadelphia landscape architect Thomas W. Sears and later, in the 1950s, by noted landscape designer Marian C. Coffin.

The naturalistic gardens were developed 1965-1971 under the design of Seth Kelsey, a Harvard trained landscape architect from Massachusetts, to feature native trees, shrubs, and native wildflowers. In the early 1980s, with input from director Dr. Richard W. Lighty, the Copelands expanded their gardening to encompass the entire Piedmont region. After Mr. Copeland's death in 1983, Mrs. Copeland continued garden development and refinement. Mrs. Copeland died in 2001, and the Center has since continued as a non-profit organization and a member of the American Public Gardens Association
