I had a great time testing out my light stencil last night. Spent 3 hours trying different things out. This is one single exposure SOOC minus a slight white balance adjustment and crop. 🔦 #stimulightthenight

If anyone saw the Coast competition on www.lightpaintingphotography.com you may have seen my image, and may have even voted, obviously all of the entries are annonomous, so I don't know exactly whos was whos, but well done to everyone who entered, any of the entries would have been a worthy winner.

I created the image on the left, by doing on of my trademark silhouette spinners, followed by careful light stencil placement in the silhouette followed by El Wire on the ground. It did take a good few attempts to get the stencil in the middle.

When it came down to the top 3 Coast voted for my image to win. I win two torches which I can't wait to use, and I get an Advert Campaign with Coast also which I am very excited about.

Thank you to everyone who voted you are all very good friends to me.

Straight from the camera. 1 blue gelled flash fired from behind subject and the bird in the foreground is a light stencil. too bad the shot is not level.....hard to see in the dark....

Lightpainted these falls a while ago now with Arun & Paul and have reprocessed it much lighter with the new desktop we have now.I think the laptop Ive been using for the last few years seems darker with a yellow cast over it.

This seems much better....?

The shot was lit with a strong torch....lightstencil from bucket in forground....an orb under the falls & a full moon that popped up in the right spot right on que.

My 8th typographic light painting of 2023. This one was super satisfying for me as it came out EXACTLY as I had envisioned it in my head.

I gotta say I was definitely inspired by another light painter's work on this one. I can't recall who it was, but they had done an in-camera double exposure like this using the lens cap method where they were standing over a creek and in the creek they lined up the traffic so it was as if they were a giant standing above the traffic in a valley. It was an epic light painting. If anyone can help me remember who did that, I'd appreciate it!

This light painting was a much needed re-energizer for myself during this year-long project. I had a great time creating it and felt like I was finally getting into a good groove with my process. I was able to very quickly dial in how my two subjects would expose and blend with each other, and I got to the location at the perfect time of evening to get set-up, shoot, and nail it pretty quickly. The efficiency was something I had been badly needing for the previous 7 shots of the year so far.

EDIT: Thanks Phill Fisher for confirming that this light painter was @Dan Whitaker a.k.a. Quornish! with this photo: www.flickr.com/photos/quornflake/16077853363/in/dateposted/

I also approached this light painting with the knowledge that it would probably be the last one I did before my first son was born and my time for light painting would be quite dramatically reduced.

Overall, I loved how this shot came out. The colors complimented the traffic and helped blend it all together. Let me know what you think.

This is my second in a new series of typographic light paintings. This is a single long-exposure light-painting photograph completely captured in-camera with no digital manipulation. I created this light stencil from a sketch I drew and cut out on a large sheet of paper. I have been documenting the process of these photos as it is quite time and labor-intensive to get the final result. Video in the works! 🔦

This shot took several repeated attempts as most double exposures do. Each shot took around 5 minutes to complete. First, I exposed the trees and added the technicolor branches, then I put the lens cap on, brought my camera inside, adjusted the focus and exposed the tree light stencil. 🔦

Straight from the camera, taken in 8 seconds of exposure. This was meant to be just a normal shot, but actually came out rather spooky! ..just had to start playing with the gear!

"From the tip of his wand burst the silver doe: she landed on the office floor, bounded once across the office, and soared out of the window. Dumbledore watched her fly away, and as her silvery glow faded, he turned back to Snape, and his eyes were full of tears.

'After all this time?'

'Always,' said Snape."

Because Snape has always been my favourite. :]

Today is one year since we lost a fellow light brother, Gareth. It was really tragic news, I was in hospital at the time I heard and it was devastating and everyone came out with the most thoughtful tribute images, being in the position I was in I was unable to contribute until some time later.

One year on and everyone has come out in the same spirit to remember a light brother, I even managed to join the occasion this time.

I put a lot of thought in to this image and has a similar theme to the last one I did. A collaboration that could never be. I used one of Gareth's fantastic Orb images as a digital light stencil, and came up with the concept.

Life is precious and the most valuable thing to each and everyone of us, we hold it in our hands and need to make the most of every moment.

Gareth was a family man and I wanted to bring that in to the image, also this is not present in the image, I had my son operating the light switch and my wife was helping with lens capping and flashing.

I hope Gareth would be proud how everyone has come together again to honour his memory.

Dan decided to do things a little differently for this shot. He went back to his roots, sketched out a stencil and worked some light painting magic!

Here is a basic tutorial from fiz-iks.com on how we do our light stencils. It sure has changed since my first tutorial.

Light stencils are an easy way to add in graphic elements to long exposure shots. Basically, this is fired in the frame while the shutter is open during a long exposure. The graphic remains while the person and box is completely invisible.

Watch the vid and make a box as directed. Using any illustration program print out your design onto fine grade paper which is slightly heavier than regular copy/printing paper. I print 2 and paste them together but make sure they are perfectly aligned by holding them up against a bright light source. I laminate mine so they can be reused as they often rip when removed or changed but this is not a necessary step.

I usually set the flash to 1/8 which works well with the settings I use on my camera for light @painting. You may need to adjust this and I suggest doing a test shot before your light work to check the exposure of the stencil. Happy shooting!

Goodbye summer, hello darkness.

Usual straight out of camera stuff....

So far 2016 has taken many of our beloved heros, the latest one a huge shock and has saddened everyone. I grew up in a Star Wars household, my Dad loved the old Star Wars films and used to watch them most weekends on VHS, he still does..As one of the main characters and a strong female role model Carrie Fisher had a large impact on the Star Wars franchise.

When I heard the news I was really shocked but wanted to pay tribute. I knew exactly what I wanted to do, and here it is.

Similar to my Kenny Baker tribute photo but more screen accurate as it is Princess Leia now being projected giving her "Help me Obi Wan Kenobi" speech.

I got the Kenny Baker one in the first few tries, this one must have taken me a good 50 odd. Couldn't get the projection to line up with the projector on R2s head. When I got it right though I knew it.

The lighting has been done spesifically in this way for 2 reasons. I have lit R2 from the right and none from the left, 1 to show Leia like Luke had the potential to be both lightside or darkside due to her parentage, and secondly using a light stencil over a white background is almost impossible to get the balences right. Also the angle of the projection meant I couldn't put it in the pitch black like I did the Keny Baker one.

The Kenny Baker one can be viewed here - www.flickr.com/photos/light_painter/28785377810

Digital Light Stencil for about 1 second, then subtle lighting from a Led Lenser P7 with low batteries from the right, slight crop in post.

Last week the world was saddened by the death of Kenny Baker, best known for playing R2-D2 in the original 6 Star Wars films.

Everyone loves R2-D2, myself included from a child right up until this day. My son also loves R2-D2 and me and my wife had bought him this interactive R2-D2 toy for his birthday. His birthday isn't until the end of September but I had to get it out a little early for this picture, and put it back once i'd finished, but thats a secret!

So I had this great idea for a tribute picture, I often like to do tribute pictures through light painting as it offers us a new perspective and an immortal memorial to the person.

The idea I had for this was quite simple, but took some doing. It could have been done in photoshop in minutes but thats not how light painters do things.

I wanted R2-D2 to be projecting a picture of Kenny Baker, similar to what he did of Leia in A New Hope.

I knew right away this would be best done with a digital light stencil, so I set out making one, first I needed a picture of Kenny, I chose an older photo from around the time of the original films, a head shot I think. then I got to editing the projector beam and giving it the right look, I was constantly going back to the film for reference as I wanted it to do it justice.

Once done I put the image on my Ipad and set up a mini studio on the table. After playing around with R2-D2s buttons and noises for about 5 mintues as i'm a big child, I carried on working, placed R2-D2 and worked on setting the Ipad so the beam would come out of the exact point it did in the film.

I thought this would be quite difficult, but to my amazement and some luck I got it spot on first time, Exposed the light stencil for about 1 second, lens capped my camera, took it away. Then uncapped the camera an lit R2-D2 on his own with my iphone doing 1 swoop from left over the top and right.

All captured in camera and hopfully doing justice to the character and the actor who will be missed by all.

I tried to be as screen acurate as I could so appolagise if it's not 100%

Enjoy and may the force by with you!

Phill has let some of Darius Twins ghosts out of their cage.

See all the collaboration shots here!

Here we see an Orb captured in the wild and preserved forever for all to look at.

An idea that sprung in to my head last night at about 1:30am had to get it done. Not in to taxidermy at all, but the concept of the picture was just right.

Digital light stencil on my iPhone of an old green orb I did years back. Took me a good few attempts to get this right, firstly was the positioning, I had to reposition the photo on my phone as it was too high in the jar, then was the focus, because the orb and the jar were at slightly different focal lengths I had to play around to get the mid exposure focus change correct.

In the end it all came together and i'm rather pleased with the result and would like to do more like this in future. Same as before Exposed for the light stencil, capped the lens, then lit the jar bounced off the ceiling with my iPhone torch.

I didn't want the photo to be studio quality or anything, It's more honest/down to earth this way so I did it in my kitchen and you can even see art on the walls in the reflection, and some other kitchen things if you look close.

Enjoy
