Den Haag Central station once was Den Haag SS (Staatsspoor) which was demolished in 1970. This pic was shot in the grand hall of the third incarnation of the station (2016, Benthem Crouwel) with its glass and metal roof of 120 x 100 meter with a height of 22 meter. Shown here is one of the light sculptures of this space.

This is number 85 of Den Haag and 1327 of Minimalism & explicit Graphism

Between 1428 and 1450, when it was dug, Het Singel was part of the perimeter of Amsterdam. Today, of course, it's a very central canal. Construction at Bridge 8 - once called 'Distribution-to-the-Poor Bridge' - at the Raadhuisstraat crossing made a temporary bridge a few meters away necessary. It's now used by pedestrians and bikes. The light sculpture was designed by René Gast and Yvonne Kroes. It's a playful rendering of an Octopus. That fits a tradition in Amsterdam that shows magical creatures sculpted in many of its bridges. Moreover, you'll often see Octopi on old sea charts and world maps. At the Raadhuisstraat it symbolises the maritine power once of Amsterdam to the very horizons of the oceans.

The photo was taken from the Torensluis Bridge.

Ancient lanterns, made from bamboo and mulberry bark paper, inspired Isamu Noguchi to design a whole range of 'light' sculptures. He called them Akari, a term meaning light as illumination, but also implying the idea of weightlessness.

They are still in production, following the traditional method that Noguchi learned in 1951 in Japan. Watch this short video to see how crafty it is done. The outcome is a resilient paper form, which can be collapsed and packed flat for shipping. The museum shop in New York has them in stock.

The basic round lantern is now copied all over the world, but Noguchi was the first modern promotor. Most of his designs ooze a 'fifties modernity' that is still alluring. "Like the beauty of falling leaves and the cherry blossom," Noguchi wrote, "Akari are poetic, ephemeral, and tentative. All that you require to start a home are a room, a tatami, and Akari.”

What are the chances of turning up to one of my favourite locations to teach a Light Painting Workshop only to find that a piece of what looked to be an old jetty had come to rest right next to the 'lone tree'. The PERFECT platform for spinning Orbs on.

Light Painting Workshop 06/04/17

Hosted by David Gilliver Photography

Think I got home at around 2:45am after teaching an epic Light Painting Workshop out at Milarrochy last night. The conditions were sublime.

And just when I thought things couldn't get any better, I spotted a random piece of old jetty floating next to the lone tree. A decent platform for Orb spinning perhaps? Darn straight!
