I’m a bit late to #YBS24Nature, but I’m on a trip, I’m in the Mojave, and I’m rounding out the year with this shot from this amazing sunset that I love. Perfect timing. Happy Holidays, y’all!

White Sands has colors beyond compare. For a place with “white” in its name, White Sands is so much more about every vibrant color it possesses than the absence of color, as its name would suggest. The sand is merely a canvas for light and refracted color as the sun makes its journey through the sky.

One of the shots I wanted most from this past trip was of the waves crashing onto the granite coast of Maine. Of course, I really wanted to capture an explosion of the waves on the rocks. I’m so happy I got one.

This was the finale at the end of a performance by a Juggler from Cirque du soleil. The lovely young lady joins him on stage after he "falters" at the end of the performance. It's a very sweet moment.

Performed at the NSA Gala at Myron's (The Smith Center) here in Las Vegas.

Vermillion Cliffs National Monument is really out of this world, especially at night.

The Moon at first light naturally framed by some clouds. Taken with a Canon 5D4 and a Sigma 135mm Art lens. Converted to black and white in Lightroom, a slightly different take to the previous image.

This owl is wondering why I'm not taking shelter as the aforementioned thunderstorm is beginning to pick up in The Everglades.

I wanted to take this photo during the day but there were always too many people around...

Happy Pride Month, y'all!

Mother hippos are very protective of their young and may keep others at a distance. However, calves are occasionally left in nurseries which are guarded by one or a few adults. Calves in nurseries engage in playfights. Weaning starts between six and eight months after birth, and most calves are fully weaned after a year. Like many other large mammals, hippos are described as K-strategists, in this case typically producing just one large, well-developed infant every couple of years (rather than many small, poorly developed young several times per year as is common among small mammals such as rodents).

There are moments, exquisite moments, in National Parks where you can see and feel the entire universe in motion all around you. Stargazing in Joshua Tree National Park is one of those moments. It's hard not to feel connected to the environment when you can actually see the stars and space and the trees and the rocks all interacting together. This is a 10 minute exposure.

The giant plated lizard is the second largest lizard species found in South Africa, after the monitor lizard, and they are known to attain a body length of approximately 690 mm. Giant plated lizards are rupicolous, which means that they live among rocky outcrops, mostly on the upper slopes of granite hills. Giant plated lizards are shy and hard to approach – an individual will often retreat into rock crevices at the slightest disturbance and inflate its body, effectively wedging itself into the crevice and making it very difficult for anything to dislodge it.

Thrilled and proud and humbled that this shot made Honorable Mention in this year's Everglades Photo Contest!

The Toadstools of Grand

Staircase, just outside of Kanab, Utah is geological wonderland; one where not the forces of the Earth carved the landscape but Salvador Dali, himself, had a hand in crafting this bizarre symphony of stone.

San Francisco is a blessed city. A World War formally ended there. The United Nations began there. The atmosphere of the city is one of art and experimentation and humanitarian enlightenment. The weather is charming and temperate and comfortable, most of the time. The city is surrounded by some of the grandest and most beautiful natural landscapes on the continent. San Francisco feels alive. If it is alive, then its roads and its movement are its lifeblood... and at night, that lifeblood truly sparkles.

This image felt as it looked- soft pink light, sharp details, and peacefulness.

Waterfalls wouldn’t sound so melodious if there were no rocks in their way.

Quenching Thirst, One Sip at a Time

Zebras, with their striking black and white stripes, are not just a marvel of nature but also fascinating creatures with unique habits. In the wild, staying hydrated is crucial for their survival. Zebras often travel long distances in search of water sources, showcasing their resilience and adaptability. They typically drink early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat of the day. Observing a zebra drinking is a reminder of the delicate balance of nature and the importance of water for all living beings. Protecting their habitats ensures that these majestic animals can continue to thrive in the wild, reminding us of the interconnectedness of life on our planet.

A couple of shots with my Canon 1D Mark II N

I’m starting to really fall in love with long exposures for photography that isn’t traditionally done with long exposures. This sunset’s motion and change of color over those thirty seconds was nearly imperceptible to the naked eye but getting to see it all at once in one image is special. This sunset was a surprise too. That ceiling of high clouds blocked the sun out most of the day and Death Valley was awash in gloom…. Until the sun came into the window of sky and space between the clouds and the mountains and set everything ablaze. Magic.

I captured this shot while walking through the busy streets of Hong Kong — drawn to the flow of people framed by layers of neon, glass, and color. The leading lines pulled my eye straight to the walkers, while the red signage and buses created rhythm and warmth through the scene.

Edited in Lightroom Classic using my Portra 400 Noritsu – Cinematic Street Final look for a film-inspired balance of warmth and realism.

💬 Would love any critique on composition, color balance, or how the motion and energy come across. Does the warmth enhance or distract from the street atmosphere?

Traveling through a slot canyon is an exercise in light and texture. Most times, the light is muted and soft and ethereal, causing the whole environment to glow and be uniform. But other moments, where the walls either recede or extend in dramatic fashion, bend the light and throw perspective into sharp relief. That’s what you’re seeing here. Peekaboo Canyon is a delight.

Across Utah and Arizona, you are in the Navajo Nation. In Navajo, sacred land is referred to as Diné Bikéyah. This land belongs to the people. Hopitutskwa, Pueblos, and Núu-agha-tʉvʉ-pʉ̱ (Ute) land is also found across these two states and at archeological sites and natural sites. It is an honor to see them.
