Organic Vibrations is a collaboration between Julia Gorman, an Australian artist whose work is currently on display in the collection galleries of the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA), and Paris-based creative and artistic collective, Danny Rose. Together, they create a single, coherent artwork from the constant morphing and mutation of a series of images, which flow seamlessly over the facade of the MCA.
The abstract images are drawn from the shapes and colours of the natural world, and are seen as sinuous lines that appear to grow organically until they cover the severe and geometric art deco facade of the Museum.
The installation uses projection-mapping techniques to transform the façade with images originally made by the artist in watercolour, oils, marker pen, and painting applications. This flow of hand made images, synthesised with music, creates a multi-sensory experience as the audience follows a 10-minute animated sequence of colour, movement and emotion.

SEATTLE - On Tuesday evening citizens in Seattle and 12
other cities appeared on overpasses and roadsides to pull the
Trans-Pacific Partnership, aka TPP, out of the shadows and into the
light of public scrutiny. From Dallas to DC, San Diego to Seattle,
Tucson to Detroit, Baltimore to Bellingham, Spokane to Chicago
people took their messages to interstate overpasses, prominent
monuments, and busy city streets using coordinated daytime and
nighttime, high visibility tactics.
They deployed giant banners saying No New NAFTA, mobilized LED light
panels saying "(thumbs up) Democracy, STOP The TPP," and projected with
spotlights messages like "Don't Fast Track A Train Wreck." These
coordinated citizen's actions coincided with ongoing TPP negotiations
taking place in Salt Lake City, Utah from November 12-24
and today's anticipated release by Congressperson Rosa DeLauro and
George Miller detailing the growing opposition to "Fast Track" among
Congress, and preceded today's surprise release by Wikileaks of a leaked
chapter of the secretive "TPP" agreement. [Here

chapter on intellectual property.]
The TPP has been called NAFTA on steroids, a "Corporate Coup," and
concerned citizens from across the nation are calling on Congress to
"Flush It!" and to oppose President Obama's request to renew "Fast
Track" authority to commit our country to this secretive agreement that
has less to do with trade, than it does with dismantling any domestic
policies that undermine future profits for transnational capital and
corporations.
Bill Moyer, Executive Director of the Backbone Campaign stated "Only a
bought a sold government would sign a treaty that sacrifices our
capacity as communities and country to pass laws for workers benefit,
and the protection of our communities and our natural resources."
The Trans-Pacific Partnership has been negotiated under secrecy for 3
years. Obama is now pushing to have it swiftly approved to much to the
dismay of members of Congress, most of whom haven't even been allowed to
see the text. While Congress is constitutionally required to negotiate
any international treaties, Fast Track or granting Obama Trade Promotion
Authority would forfeit the Congress' responsibility and the public's
right to weigh in on the TPP negotiations.
Perhaps in response to growing citizen outrage letters were release
today from both Democrats and Republicans challenging President Obama's
request for renewal of Fast Track authority. [From Today's Public

letter from Democratic Ways & Means members, One
of two letters, this led by Representative Walter Jones (R-NC)]
One of the illuminated messages on Tuesday read "Corporate Tribunals
WTF?" This referred to how the TPP would give more power to corporate
interests including the ability for foreign companies to sue for
taxpayer compensation if any domestic law diminished the company's expected future profits.
Masked as a trade deal, the agreement has been negotiated under
supervision of 600 unelected corporate "trade advisors" while the text
has been hidden from members of Congress, the press, and the public.
What has been learned about the TPP has come through leaked texts, and
is alarming to members of Congress worried about sovereign powers being
negotiated away, public health officials, labor representatives,
environmental groups, and advocates of consumer issues.
"The TPP, the largest ever of it's kind, is a race to the bottom
international agreement on domestic and international policies of food
safety, internet freedom, medicine costs, financial regulation, and the
environment," says Kristen Beifus, executive director of Washington Fair
Trade Coalition."
Trade Justice organizations have declared December 3rd a "Global Day of
Action Against the TPP to resist toxic trade agreements." Citizens are
urged to take action in their own community, contact their
congressperson, and learn more about the TPP's dismantling of democracy
by visiting VoteNoFastTrack.org.
Citizens can find out where their congressperson stands and tweet them
Tuesday's coordinated actions were organized by the Backbone Campaign,
which specializes in "amplifying citizen engagement with creative
tactics and artful activism" in collaboration with Public Citizen's
Global Trade Watch, PopularResistance.org, Fair Trade Coalitions in
Washington and Oregon, the Overpass Light
Brigade network, and more.
The coordinated day of action follows on the heals of an action in
September when to the surprise of secret service, members and allies of
PopularResistance.org and the Backbone Campaign "redecorated"
the United States Trade Representatives office by scaling the building
and unfurling giant banners demanding a release of the TPP text. The

Sydney will once again be transformed into a spectacular canvas of light, music and ideas when Vivid Sydney takes over the city after dark from 25 May – 11 June 2012.
Colouring the city with creativity and inspiration, Vivid Sydney highlights include the hugely popular immersive light installations and projections; performances from local and international musicians at Vivid LIVE at Sydney Opera House and the new Vivid Ideas Exchange at the MCA featuring public talks and debates from leading global creative thinkers.
Vivid Sydney is a major celebration of the creative industries and the biggest festival of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, attracting over 400,000 attendees in 2011.

The Customs House is an historic Sydney landmark located in the city's Circular Quay area. Constructed initially in 1844-1845, the building served as the headquarters of the Customs Service until 1990. Ownership was then transferred from the Commonwealth Government of Australia to the City of Sydney Council in 1994, when it became a venue for exhibitions and private functions.
After being refurbished in 2003, it has also become the new home of the City of Sydney Library.
People of the Eora tribe are said to have witnessed from the site, in 1788, the landing of the First Fleet. Convict David O'Connor was hanged on the site in 1790 and it is said that his ghost haunts the Customs House to this day, offering people rum.
The driving force behind the construction of the original sandstone edifice on Circular Quay was Colonel John George Nathaniel Gibbes (1787-1873), the Collector of Customs for New South Wales for a record term of 25 years from 1834 to 1859. Colonel Gibbes persuaded the Governor of NSW, Sir George Gipps, to begin construction of the Customs House in 1844 in response to Sydney's growing volume of maritime trade. The building project also doubled as an unemployment relief measure for stone masons and laborers during an economic depression which was afflicting the colony at the time.
The two-storey Georgian structure was designed by Mortimer Lewis and featured 13 large and expensive windows in the facade to afford a clear view of shipping activity in Sydney Cove. Colonel Gibbes, who dwelt opposite Circular Quay on Kirribilli Point, was able to watch progress on the Customs House's construction from the verandah of his private residence, Wotonga House (now Admiralty House).
The Customs House opened for business in 1845 and replaced cramped premises at The Rocks. It was partially dismantled and expanded to three levels under the supervision of the then Colonial Architect, James Barnet, in 1887. Various additions were made over the next century, particularly during the period of the First World War, but some significant vestiges of the original Gibbes-Lewis building remain.
The Coat of arms of the United Kingdom is displayed on Customs House. The coat features both the motto of English monarchs, Dieu et mon droit (God and my right), and the motto of the Order of the Garter, Honi soit qui mal y pense (Shamed be he who thinks ill of it) on a representation of the Garter behind the shield.
Now heading into its fourth year, Vivid Sydney was ranked in the Top Ten global ideas festivals by the influential Guardian newspaper in the UK.
Worldwide renowned local lighting designer, Philip Lethlean created a wonderland of colourful installations of lighting treatments with visual identities by their own definition along Melbourne’s Flinders Lane and the famous Princess Bridge. Tablet Eleven was a projection that homage to the admiration generations have of digital media. It depicts two virtual stained glass windows against the back of St. Paul’s Cathedral, showing Moses holding aloft the Eleventh Commandment (an i-Pad) before an audience of people taking pictures of him with their i-phones. With over twenty years of experience across all art forms, Philip Lethlean is the principal designer for the Melbourne based company, Light Designs Australia. His works have consistently toured, with recent international projects including projections with Arabic singers in the UAE, DreamWorks and Global Creatures arena spectacular in the USA, Bali Safari and Marine Park in Indonesia and the Australian Pavilion Expo in Shanghai, China.
The White Night Festival in Melbourne is a State Government of Victoria initiative created by the Victorian Major Events Company. Originally conceived in Paris in 2002, to make vibrant and dynamic art and culture accessible to large audiences in public spaces, Paris’ Nuit Blanche (White Night) has inspired an international network of similar programmes in over twenty cities globally, including Melbourne.
In 2013 Melbourne became the first Australian city to create its own White Night Festival, producing an all night event of light, colour and artistry. The White Night Festival, now in its second year, is a wonderful opportunity to showcase Melbourne as Australia’s international city of artistic innovation, and celebrate the city’s commitment to modern and interpretive art, music and culture.
St. Paul’s Cathedral is high Victorian Gothic, with poly textured finish Waurn Ponds and Barrabool sandstone cladding. The horizontally striped interior derived from Siena Cathedral, is lavishly fitted out with encaustic tiled floor and wainscoting, stained glass by Clayton and Bell of London, a reredos of Derbyshire spa, Devonshire marble and Venetian glass mosaic, and furniture and fittings of Blackwood. The organ was built by T. C. Lewis, London in 1890, rebuilt in 1929 by Hill, Norman and Beard of Clifton Hill, and restored in 1989-90 by Harrison and Harrison, Durham. The Cathedral Offices of four stories in ecclesiastical Gothic style are situated between the Chapter house and the Cathedral.

URBANSCREEN have taken the art of light projection, video mapping and motion graphics to extraordinary heights in their many large scale installations, including commissions from major art galleries, international festivals and opera companies. Recent works showcase their versatile and sensitive engagement with architecture, from the dream-themed 555 Kubik at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the ‘operatic staging’ of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Idomeneo, Rè di Creta at Theatre Bremen, to the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Museums Quartier in Vienna – highlighting Creative Director Thorsten Bauer’s musical approach to institutions.
The work will explore both the iconic sculptural form of the Opera House but also its place as a home for music, dance and drama, resulting in a work that is both sophisticated and spectacular." Reference
While the lightshows around the harbour are stunning it is worth noting that there is just so much more to the Vivid Sydney Festival and more than one night does need to be allocated to see all that this festival has to offer.

In response to the NRA's 2018 national convention in Dallas, skilled light technicians and activists in over 15 cities will project anti-gun violence messages on buildings across the US this Thursday through Sunday. The messages read “The NRA Enables Domestic Terrorists”, an image of an AR-15 with a slash through it, and another calling out the amount that city’s Congressional District’s elected officials’ have taken from the NRA, in exchange for their silence on ending gun violence.
The action is coordinated by the Washington State-based Backbone Campaign, an organization that provides creative tactics to the progressive movement. Backbone Campaign’s network of Solidarity Brigades, skilled tacticians in over 20 cities, is mobilizing this largest coordinated grassroots light projection action.
With a light projector, GOBOs (metal stencils), and a battery, images and text will light up sides of buildings protesting the NRA and elected officials’ collusion with their platform. Local activists in each city have researched the amount their elected officials have taken from the NRA in campaign contributions and will be exposing those amounts in a large, visible, and public way.
Actions are planned to happen today (5-3-18) through Saturday in Dallas, Boulder, LA, San Diego, Tallahassee, Nashville, Spokane, Madison, DC, NYC, Chicago, Portland, Atlanta, Detroit, Tacoma, Seattle.

SEATTLE - On Tuesday evening citizens in Seattle and 12
other cities appeared on overpasses and roadsides to pull the
Trans-Pacific Partnership, aka TPP, out of the shadows and into the
light of public scrutiny. From Dallas to DC, San Diego to Seattle,
Tucson to Detroit, Baltimore to Bellingham, Spokane to Chicago
people took their messages to interstate overpasses, prominent
monuments, and busy city streets using coordinated daytime and
nighttime, high visibility tactics.
They deployed giant banners saying No New NAFTA, mobilized LED light
panels saying "(thumbs up) Democracy, STOP The TPP," and projected with
spotlights messages like "Don't Fast Track A Train Wreck." These
coordinated citizen's actions coincided with ongoing TPP negotiations
taking place in Salt Lake City, Utah from November 12-24
and today's anticipated release by Congressperson Rosa DeLauro and
George Miller detailing the growing opposition to "Fast Track" among
Congress, and preceded today's surprise release by Wikileaks of a leaked
chapter of the secretive "TPP" agreement. [Here

The TPP has been called NAFTA on steroids, a "Corporate Coup," and
concerned citizens from across the nation are calling on Congress to
"Flush It!" and to oppose President Obama's request to renew "Fast
Track" authority to commit our country to this secretive agreement that
has less to do with trade, than it does with dismantling any domestic
policies that undermine future profits for transnational capital and
corporations.
Bill Moyer, Executive Director of the Backbone Campaign stated "Only a
bought a sold government would sign a treaty that sacrifices our
capacity as communities and country to pass laws for workers benefit,
and the protection of our communities and our natural resources."
The Trans-Pacific Partnership has been negotiated under secrecy for 3
years. Obama is now pushing to have it swiftly approved to much to the
dismay of members of Congress, most of whom haven't even been allowed to
see the text. While Congress is constitutionally required to negotiate
any international treaties, Fast Track or granting Obama Trade Promotion
Authority would forfeit the Congress' responsibility and the public's
right to weigh in on the TPP negotiations.
Perhaps in response to growing citizen outrage letters were release
today from both Democrats and Republicans challenging President Obama's
request for renewal of Fast Track authority. [From Today's Public

One of the illuminated messages on Tuesday read "Corporate Tribunals
WTF?" This referred to how the TPP would give more power to corporate
interests including the ability for foreign companies to sue for
taxpayer compensation if any domestic law diminished the company's expected future profits.
Masked as a trade deal, the agreement has been negotiated under
supervision of 600 unelected corporate "trade advisors" while the text
has been hidden from members of Congress, the press, and the public.
What has been learned about the TPP has come through leaked texts, and
is alarming to members of Congress worried about sovereign powers being
negotiated away, public health officials, labor representatives,
environmental groups, and advocates of consumer issues.
"The TPP, the largest ever of it's kind, is a race to the bottom
international agreement on domestic and international policies of food
safety, internet freedom, medicine costs, financial regulation, and the
environment," says Kristen Beifus, executive director of Washington Fair
Trade Coalition."
Trade Justice organizations have declared December 3rd a "Global Day of
Action Against the TPP to resist toxic trade agreements." Citizens are
urged to take action in their own community, contact their
congressperson, and learn more about the TPP's dismantling of democracy

Tuesday's coordinated actions were organized by the Backbone Campaign,

Created by The Electric Canvas, Wonderland was celebrated feature of the inaugural Melbourne White Night Festival. The 2014 Wonderland consists of projections that transformed the buildings of Flinders Street once the sun set; turning the brick and concrete facades of early Twentieth Century buildings such as Flinders Street Station, the Metropolitan Gas Company building, the former Commercial Travellers Club building, the former Ball and Welch Department Store, the Masonic Club building and the former Forum and Rapallo Cinemas into brilliantly coloured canvases that showed off images of magic, carnivals, amusement parks and circuses.
The White Night Festival in Melbourne is a State Government of Victoria initiative created by the Victorian Major Events Company. Originally conceived in Paris in 2002, to make vibrant and dynamic art and culture accessible to large audiences in public spaces, Paris’ Nuit Blanche (White Night) has inspired an international network of similar programmes in over twenty cities globally, including Melbourne.
In 2013 Melbourne became the first Australian city to create its own White Night Festival, producing an all night event of light, colour and artistry. The White Night Festival, now in its second year, is a wonderful opportunity to showcase Melbourne as Australia’s international city of artistic innovation, and celebrate the city’s commitment to modern and interpretive art, music and culture.
Flinders Street Railway Station occupies a site that has been the central point of Melbourne's rail system since 1854. By the 1880s the original weatherboard makeshift buildings were considered inadequate and finally in 1899, after various plans lapsed, a competition was held for the design of station buildings and approaches. The competition was won by James Fawcett and H.P.C. Ashworth of the Railways Department. Their winning plans consisted of three floor plans and a roof plan covering the same area as the existing building along Flinders Street and substantial buildings along Swanston Street. Work commenced in 1900 by P. Rodger but was later taken over by the Railways and completed in 1910. The five storey Station complex extends for more than the length of a city block and includes offices, station facilities and platforms. The main entrance, angled across the intersection of Swanston and Flinders Streets, features a large arch and the original timetable clocks, and is surmounted by a large dome flanked by smaller cupolas. At the intersection of Elizabeth and Flinders Streets, a large clock tower rises above the building. The building was constructed of red brick with cement decoration and liberal use was made of pressed metal decoration. Flinders street is the busiest suburban railway station in the southern hemisphere even after the completion of the city loop railway subway and its 700 metre main platform is the longest in the country. Flinders Street Station is 'the' meeting place for Melburnians, expressed simply as "meet me under the clocks", a reference to the clocks above the main entrance.

Last night, I went into the City of Sydney to view firsthand the spectacular VIVID SYDNEY #vividsydney a festival of light, music and ideas. Vivid Sydney runs from 24 May – 10 June 2013.
This image is one of my long exposure photographs of the bright and colorful projections of light on the Sydney Opera House. These colorful projections were continuously changing making Sydney Harbour look like a piece of art.
The yellow golden streaks in the foreground are boats or ferries passing by, as the harbor was full of activity with many keen to view the light show from the water.
Colouring the city with creativity and inspiration, Vivid Sydney highlights include the hugely popular immersive light installations and projections; Vivid Aquatique immersive water theatre; performances from local and international musicians at Vivid LIVE at Sydney Opera House and the Vivid Ideas Exchange featuring public talks and debates from leading global creative thinkers.
The Sydney Opera House was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 28 June 2007. It is one of the 20th century's most distinctive buildings and one of the most famous performing arts centers in the world.
The Sydney Opera House is on Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour, close to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It sits at the north-eastern tip of the Sydney central business district (the CBD), surrounded on three sides by the harbour (Sydney Cove and Farm Cove) and inland by the Royal Botanic Gardens.

Sydney will once again be transformed into a spectacular canvas of light, music and ideas when Vivid Sydney takes over the city after dark from 25 May – 11 June 2012.
Colouring the city with creativity and inspiration, Vivid Sydney highlights include the hugely popular immersive light installations and projections; performances from local and international musicians at Vivid LIVE at Sydney Opera House and the new Vivid Ideas Exchange at the MCA featuring public talks and debates from leading global creative thinkers.
Vivid Sydney is a major celebration of the creative industries and the biggest festival of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, attracting over 400,000 attendees in 2011.

The Customs House is an historic Sydney landmark located in the city's Circular Quay area. Constructed initially in 1844-1845, the building served as the headquarters of the Customs Service until 1990. Ownership was then transferred from the Commonwealth Government of Australia to the City of Sydney Council in 1994, when it became a venue for exhibitions and private functions.
After being refurbished in 2003, it has also become the new home of the City of Sydney Library.
People of the Eora tribe are said to have witnessed from the site, in 1788, the landing of the First Fleet. Convict David O'Connor was hanged on the site in 1790 and it is said that his ghost haunts the Customs House to this day, offering people rum.
The driving force behind the construction of the original sandstone edifice on Circular Quay was Colonel John George Nathaniel Gibbes (1787-1873), the Collector of Customs for New South Wales for a record term of 25 years from 1834 to 1859. Colonel Gibbes persuaded the Governor of NSW, Sir George Gipps, to begin construction of the Customs House in 1844 in response to Sydney's growing volume of maritime trade. The building project also doubled as an unemployment relief measure for stone masons and laborers during an economic depression which was afflicting the colony at the time.
The two-storey Georgian structure was designed by Mortimer Lewis and featured 13 large and expensive windows in the facade to afford a clear view of shipping activity in Sydney Cove. Colonel Gibbes, who dwelt opposite Circular Quay on Kirribilli Point, was able to watch progress on the Customs House's construction from the verandah of his private residence, Wotonga House (now Admiralty House).
The Customs House opened for business in 1845 and replaced cramped premises at The Rocks. It was partially dismantled and expanded to three levels under the supervision of the then Colonial Architect, James Barnet, in 1887. Various additions were made over the next century, particularly during the period of the First World War, but some significant vestiges of the original Gibbes-Lewis building remain.
The Coat of arms of the United Kingdom is displayed on Customs House. The coat features both the motto of English monarchs, Dieu et mon droit (God and my right), and the motto of the Order of the Garter, Honi soit qui mal y pense (Shamed be he who thinks ill of it) on a representation of the Garter behind the shield.
Now heading into its fourth year, Vivid Sydney was ranked in the Top Ten global ideas festivals by the influential Guardian newspaper in the UK.
The artist duo Luftwerk has created this light projection and water exhibit on Couch Street turning an alley into visualization of elemental flow between the Chicago and Hamburg rivers.
Enlighten Festival

Enlighten, which runs for about 2wks, is part of the Canberra Festival has become a major annual event on Canberra’s social calendar.
The festival illuminates the city after dark & features many free events.
Around 10,000 people attended the opening night even though the weather conditions were not kind with drizzle throughout the evening.
Events include architectural light projections, late night openings, special dining experiences & an outdoor entertainment area.
There were amazing light projections courtesy of The Electric Canvas, illuminated some of Canberra’s most iconic buildings around the parliamentary triangle area.
These were: Parliament House, Old Parliament House, National Library of Australia, National Portrait Gallery, National Gallery of Australia & Questacon.
Another highlight of the Enlighten Festival was the interactive Circle of Light.
Twelve searchlights scoured the skies of Canberra creating various patterns with changing colours.
This display was visible for many kilometres.
Several of these buildings stayed open late during the festival including both Parliament Houses, the NGA, and Questacon.
Free & special after hours tours were a feature at these famous buildings.
Other highlights of the event were The Fire Garden which transformed the High Court area with a sea of flames & torches.
A fiery garden of flames from hundreds of torches, along with water features that were ignited created a stunning display.
On the second weekend of the festival was Fiers a Cheval (France), a herd of 4 metre tall white horses, controlled by puppeteers.
With a musical accompaniment and a healthy dose of smoke & mirrors, a spectacular illusion of horses galloping & floating through the night was created.
Late night music performances at the festival included:
Charles Webster, from NYC, USA, a James Brown impersonator and R&B artist, backed by The Brass Knuckle Brass Band.
The Twoks, a high energy Melbourne art-pop violin/drums duo.
From W.A was the good time grooves of dub/reggae band - The Sunshine Brothers.
Also featured was Spain’s famous surf band - Los Coronas.
Vivid Light transforms Sydney into a wonderland of 'light art' sculptures, innovative installations and grand-scale projections for all to enjoy.

The 2014 Wonderland consists of projections that transformed the buildings of Flinders Street once the sun set; turning the brick and concrete facades of early Twentieth Century buildings such as Flinders Street Station, the Metropolitan Gas Company building, the former Commercial Travellers Club building, the former Ball and Welch Department Store, the Masonic Club building and the former Forum and Rapallo Cinemas into brilliantly coloured canvases that showed off images of magic, carnivals, amusement parks and circuses.
The White Night Festival in Melbourne is a State Government of Victoria initiative created by the Victorian Major Events Company. Originally conceived in Paris in 2002, to make vibrant and dynamic art and culture accessible to large audiences in public spaces, Paris’ Nuit Blanche (White Night) has inspired an international network of similar programmes in over twenty cities globally, including Melbourne.
In 2013 Melbourne became the first Australian city to create its own White Night Festival, producing an all night event of light, colour and artistry. The White Night Festival, now in its second year, is a wonderful opportunity to showcase Melbourne as Australia’s international city of artistic innovation, and celebrate the city’s commitment to modern and interpretive art, music and culture.
The Forum and Rapallo Cinemas, formerly the State Theatre, were designed by the American cinema architect John Eberson in association with the prominent Melbourne architects Bohringer, Taylor and Johnson in 1928. It was built at the climax of the boom years in cinema construction, and was operated by Union Theatres. It had the largest capacity of any cinema in the country with 3371 seats. Unlike most picture palaces, this form of cinema design attempted to create the illusion of an exotic walled garden in the auditorium, complete with appropriate statuary, a blue ceiling, twinkling stars and projected clouds. The interior incorporates elements of Italian medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and Spanish Mission styles combined with bold classical Roman and Renaissance architectural forms to create a lush, impossibly exotic atmosphere. Externally the building is a Moorish fantasy with a jewelled clock tower with a copper clad Saracenic dome, minarets and barley sugar columns and rich pressed cement decoration. Construction is steel frame and brick.

Enlighten, which runs for about 2wks, is part of the Canberra Festival has become a major annual event on Canberra’s social calendar.
The festival illuminates the city after dark & features many free events.
Around 10,000 people attended the opening night even though the weather conditions were not kind with drizzle throughout the evening.
Events include architectural light projections, late night openings, special dining experiences & an outdoor entertainment area.
There were amazing light projections courtesy of The Electric Canvas, illuminated some of Canberra’s most iconic buildings around the parliamentary triangle area.
These were: Parliament House, Old Parliament House, National Library of Australia, National Portrait Gallery, National Gallery of Australia & Questacon.
Another highlight of the Enlighten Festival was the interactive Circle of Light.
Twelve searchlights scoured the skies of Canberra creating various patterns with changing colours.
This display was visible for many kilometres.
Several of these buildings stayed open late during the festival including both Parliament Houses, the NGA, and Questacon.
Free & special after hours tours were a feature at these famous buildings.
Other highlights of the event were The Fire Garden which transformed the High Court area with a sea of flames & torches.
A fiery garden of flames from hundreds of torches, along with water features that were ignited created a stunning display.
On the second weekend of the festival was Fiers a Cheval (France), a herd of 4 metre tall white horses, controlled by puppeteers.
With a musical accompaniment and a healthy dose of smoke & mirrors, a spectacular illusion of horses galloping & floating through the night was created.
Late night music performances at the festival included:
Charles Webster, from NYC, USA, a James Brown impersonator and R&B artist, backed by The Brass Knuckle Brass Band.
The Twoks, a high energy Melbourne art-pop violin/drums duo.
From W.A was the good time grooves of dub/reggae band - The Sunshine Brothers.
Also featured was Spain’s famous surf band - Los Coronas.

SEATTLE - On Tuesday evening citizens in Seattle and 12
other cities appeared on overpasses and roadsides to pull the
Trans-Pacific Partnership, aka TPP, out of the shadows and into the
light of public scrutiny. From Dallas to DC, San Diego to Seattle,
Tucson to Detroit, Baltimore to Bellingham, Spokane to Chicago
people took their messages to interstate overpasses, prominent
monuments, and busy city streets using coordinated daytime and
nighttime, high visibility tactics.
They deployed giant banners saying No New NAFTA, mobilized LED light
panels saying "(thumbs up) Democracy, STOP The TPP," and projected with
spotlights messages like "Don't Fast Track A Train Wreck." These
coordinated citizen's actions coincided with ongoing TPP negotiations
taking place in Salt Lake City, Utah from November 12-24
and today's anticipated release by Congressperson Rosa DeLauro and
George Miller detailing the growing opposition to "Fast Track" among
Congress, and preceded today's surprise release by Wikileaks of a leaked
chapter of the secretive "TPP" agreement. [Here

The TPP has been called NAFTA on steroids, a "Corporate Coup," and
concerned citizens from across the nation are calling on Congress to
"Flush It!" and to oppose President Obama's request to renew "Fast
Track" authority to commit our country to this secretive agreement that
has less to do with trade, than it does with dismantling any domestic
policies that undermine future profits for transnational capital and
corporations.
Bill Moyer, Executive Director of the Backbone Campaign stated "Only a
bought a sold government would sign a treaty that sacrifices our
capacity as communities and country to pass laws for workers benefit,
and the protection of our communities and our natural resources."
The Trans-Pacific Partnership has been negotiated under secrecy for 3
years. Obama is now pushing to have it swiftly approved to much to the
dismay of members of Congress, most of whom haven't even been allowed to
see the text. While Congress is constitutionally required to negotiate
any international treaties, Fast Track or granting Obama Trade Promotion
Authority would forfeit the Congress' responsibility and the public's
right to weigh in on the TPP negotiations.
Perhaps in response to growing citizen outrage letters were release
today from both Democrats and Republicans challenging President Obama's
request for renewal of Fast Track authority. [From Today's Public

of two letters, this led by Representative Walter Jones (R-NC)]
One of the illuminated messages on Tuesday read "Corporate Tribunals
WTF?" This referred to how the TPP would give more power to corporate
interests including the ability for foreign companies to sue for
taxpayer compensation if any domestic law diminished the company's expected future profits.
Masked as a trade deal, the agreement has been negotiated under
supervision of 600 unelected corporate "trade advisors" while the text
has been hidden from members of Congress, the press, and the public.
What has been learned about the TPP has come through leaked texts, and
is alarming to members of Congress worried about sovereign powers being
negotiated away, public health officials, labor representatives,
environmental groups, and advocates of consumer issues.
"The TPP, the largest ever of it's kind, is a race to the bottom
international agreement on domestic and international policies of food
safety, internet freedom, medicine costs, financial regulation, and the
environment," says Kristen Beifus, executive director of Washington Fair
Trade Coalition."
Trade Justice organizations have declared December 3rd a "Global Day of
Action Against the TPP to resist toxic trade agreements." Citizens are
urged to take action in their own community, contact their
congressperson, and learn more about the TPP's dismantling of democracy
by visiting VoteNoFastTrack.org.
Citizens can find out where their congressperson stands and tweet them
Tuesday's coordinated actions were organized by the Backbone Campaign,
which specializes in "amplifying citizen engagement with creative
tactics and artful activism" in collaboration with Public Citizen's
Global Trade Watch, PopularResistance.org, Fair Trade Coalitions in
Washington and Oregon, the Overpass Light
Brigade network, and more.
The coordinated day of action follows on the heals of an action in
September when to the surprise of secret service, members and allies of
PopularResistance.org and the Backbone Campaign "redecorated"
the United States Trade Representatives office by scaling the building
and unfurling giant banners demanding a release of the TPP text. The

Sydney will once again be transformed into a spectacular canvas of light, music and ideas when Vivid Sydney takes over the city after dark from 25 May – 11 June 2012.
Colouring the city with creativity and inspiration, Vivid Sydney highlights include the hugely popular immersive light installations and projections; performances from local and international musicians at Vivid LIVE at Sydney Opera House and the new Vivid Ideas Exchange at the MCA featuring public talks and debates from leading global creative thinkers.
Vivid Sydney is a major celebration of the creative industries and the biggest festival of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, attracting over 400,000 attendees in 2011.

The Customs House is an historic Sydney landmark located in the city's Circular Quay area. Constructed initially in 1844-1845, the building served as the headquarters of the Customs Service until 1990. Ownership was then transferred from the Commonwealth Government of Australia to the City of Sydney Council in 1994, when it became a venue for exhibitions and private functions.
After being refurbished in 2003, it has also become the new home of the City of Sydney Library.
People of the Eora tribe are said to have witnessed from the site, in 1788, the landing of the First Fleet. Convict David O'Connor was hanged on the site in 1790 and it is said that his ghost haunts the Customs House to this day, offering people rum.
The driving force behind the construction of the original sandstone edifice on Circular Quay was Colonel John George Nathaniel Gibbes (1787-1873), the Collector of Customs for New South Wales for a record term of 25 years from 1834 to 1859. Colonel Gibbes persuaded the Governor of NSW, Sir George Gipps, to begin construction of the Customs House in 1844 in response to Sydney's growing volume of maritime trade. The building project also doubled as an unemployment relief measure for stone masons and laborers during an economic depression which was afflicting the colony at the time.
The two-storey Georgian structure was designed by Mortimer Lewis and featured 13 large and expensive windows in the facade to afford a clear view of shipping activity in Sydney Cove. Colonel Gibbes, who dwelt opposite Circular Quay on Kirribilli Point, was able to watch progress on the Customs House's construction from the verandah of his private residence, Wotonga House (now Admiralty House).
The Customs House opened for business in 1845 and replaced cramped premises at The Rocks. It was partially dismantled and expanded to three levels under the supervision of the then Colonial Architect, James Barnet, in 1887. Various additions were made over the next century, particularly during the period of the First World War, but some significant vestiges of the original Gibbes-Lewis building remain.
The Coat of arms of the United Kingdom is displayed on Customs House. The coat features both the motto of English monarchs, Dieu et mon droit (God and my right), and the motto of the Order of the Garter, Honi soit qui mal y pense (Shamed be he who thinks ill of it) on a representation of the Garter behind the shield.
Now heading into its fourth year, Vivid Sydney was ranked in the Top Ten global ideas festivals by the influential Guardian newspaper in the UK.

The art of crochet isn’t restricted to tea cosies and dolls smuggling toilet rolls under their beautifully-crafted dresses. Vivid Sydney brings Nanna's craft into the 21st century in this amazing light sculpture.
Magic Circle is an immense two-metre-square glowing version of the humble crochet granny square, often seen repeated in traditional blankets and vintage crochet designs.
This impressive artwork uses traditional craft techniques in innovative ways, to produce an architectural-scale installation, and a revolutionary interpretation of textile artistry.
The piece is crocheted by hand, using a large hook, 500m of cotton rope and 55m of LED rope light. The crocheted rope is entwined around the lights, masking the light source and forming internally illuminated coils. The coils glow and are linked decoratively together with more rope, using traditional crochet motifs.

A colorful and patterned mozaic effect on our Sydney Opera House during the 2014 Vivid Sydney light show.
24th May 2014, I went into the City of Sydney to view firsthand the spectacular VIVID SYDNEY 2014, a festival of light, music and ideas. This image is one of my long exposure photographs of the bright and colorful projections of light and patterns on the Sydney Opera House. These colorful projections were continuously changing making Sydney Harbour look like a piece of art.
Many of the ferries also had colorful lighting which just added to the bright and happy atmosphere created by this festival.
Coloring the city with creativity and inspiration, Vivid Sydney highlights include the hugely popular immersive light installations and projections; Vivid Aquatique immersive water theatre; performances from local and international musicians at Vivid LIVE at Sydney Opera House and the Vivid Ideas Exchange featuring public talks and debates from leading global creative thinkers.
The Sydney Opera House was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 28 June 2007. It is one of the 20th century's most distinctive buildings and one of the most famous performing arts centers in the world.
The Sydney Opera House is on Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour, close to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It sits at the north-eastern tip of the Sydney central business district (the CBD), surrounded on three sides by the harbour (Sydney Cove and Farm Cove) and inland by the Royal Botanic Gardens.

Cellular Tessellation - blue - is an architectural installation that transforms your urban experience as a pedestrian. This softly glowing, geometric form responds to your movements, creating an ever-shifting space of patterned and immersive light.
The impact is both spatial and aesthetic – you can be ‘inside’ the space of the pavilion, as well as experiencing the project visually. As you move through and around the pavilion, you can manipulate the lighting effects – watch how the intensity and colour of the illuminations change as you interact with Cellular Tessellation. The artwork ‘reads’ the proximity and number of inhabitants inside the pavilion, and feeds this information back to you by adjusting its light output. It’s as if the pavilion comes alive as more people flock inside.

The TPP has been called NAFTA on steroids, a "Corporate Coup," and
concerned citizens from across the nation are calling on Congress to
"Flush It!" and to oppose President Obama's request to renew "Fast
Track" authority to commit our country to this secretive agreement that
has less to do with trade, than it does with dismantling any domestic
policies that undermine future profits for transnational capital and
corporations.
Bill Moyer, Executive Director of the Backbone Campaign stated "Only a
bought a sold government would sign a treaty that sacrifices our
capacity as communities and country to pass laws for workers benefit,
and the protection of our communities and our natural resources."
The Trans-Pacific Partnership has been negotiated under secrecy for 3
years. Obama is now pushing to have it swiftly approved to much to the
dismay of members of Congress, most of whom haven't even been allowed to
see the text. While Congress is constitutionally required to negotiate
any international treaties, Fast Track or granting Obama Trade Promotion
Authority would forfeit the Congress' responsibility and the public's
right to weigh in on the TPP negotiations.
Perhaps in response to growing citizen outrage letters were release
today from both Democrats and Republicans challenging President Obama's
request for renewal of Fast Track authority. [From Today's Public

One of the illuminated messages on Tuesday read "Corporate Tribunals
WTF?" This referred to how the TPP would give more power to corporate
interests including the ability for foreign companies to sue for
taxpayer compensation if any domestic law diminished the company's expected future profits.
Masked as a trade deal, the agreement has been negotiated under
supervision of 600 unelected corporate "trade advisors" while the text
has been hidden from members of Congress, the press, and the public.
What has been learned about the TPP has come through leaked texts, and
is alarming to members of Congress worried about sovereign powers being
negotiated away, public health officials, labor representatives,
environmental groups, and advocates of consumer issues.
"The TPP, the largest ever of it's kind, is a race to the bottom
international agreement on domestic and international policies of food
safety, internet freedom, medicine costs, financial regulation, and the
environment," says Kristen Beifus, executive director of Washington Fair
Trade Coalition."
Trade Justice organizations have declared December 3rd a "Global Day of
Action Against the TPP to resist toxic trade agreements." Citizens are
urged to take action in their own community, contact their
congressperson, and learn more about the TPP's dismantling of democracy
by visiting VoteNoFastTrack.org.
Citizens can find out where their congressperson stands and tweet them
Tuesday's coordinated actions were organized by the Backbone Campaign,
which specializes in "amplifying citizen engagement with creative
tactics and artful activism" in collaboration with Public Citizen's
Global Trade Watch, PopularResistance.org, Fair Trade Coalitions in
Washington and Oregon, the Overpass Light
Brigade network, and more.
The coordinated day of action follows on the heals of an action in
September when to the surprise of secret service, members and allies of
PopularResistance.org and the Backbone Campaign "redecorated"
the United States Trade Representatives office by scaling the building
and unfurling giant banners demanding a release of the TPP text. The

In response to the NRA's 2018 national convention in Dallas, skilled light technicians and activists in over 15 cities will project anti-gun violence messages on buildings across the US this Thursday through Sunday. The messages read “The NRA Enables Domestic Terrorists”, an image of an AR-15 with a slash through it, and another calling out the amount that city’s Congressional District’s elected officials’ have taken from the NRA, in exchange for their silence on ending gun violence.
The action is coordinated by the Washington State-based Backbone Campaign, an organization that provides creative tactics to the progressive movement. Backbone Campaign’s network of Solidarity Brigades, skilled tacticians in over 20 cities, is mobilizing this largest coordinated grassroots light projection action.
With a light projector, GOBOs (metal stencils), and a battery, images and text will light up sides of buildings protesting the NRA and elected officials’ collusion with their platform. Local activists in each city have researched the amount their elected officials have taken from the NRA in campaign contributions and will be exposing those amounts in a large, visible, and public way.
Actions are planned to happen today (5-3-18) through Saturday in Dallas, Boulder, LA, San Diego, Tallahassee, Nashville, Spokane, Madison, DC, NYC, Chicago, Portland, Atlanta, Detroit, Tacoma, Seattle.
"The majority of Americans support stronger gun laws as a real way to reduce deaths, but our Congress refuses to act, out of fear of alienating their sugar daddy, the NRA. We are exposing the blood money that our elected officials have accepted from the NRA for inaction. Their collusion with an organization that enables domestic terrorists and endangers us all is cause for their removal from office,” says Backbone Campaign Executive Director Bill Moyer.
“Our youth should not have to be traumatized by “shooter drills” so that profiteers of violence can continue making and selling these weapons of war. Too many lives have already been lost. It is long past time to grow constituent pressure for an assault weapons ban. Thus, We the People - especially the youth - are taking leadership since the so-called leaders have failed us.”

In her emotionally charged Vivid Light debut, Sydney-based artist Claudia Nicholson has created a romantic homage to her birth country of Colombia. Nicholson engages with Latinx cultural traditions, remixing them with pop culture references and brand identities to explore her complex transnational heritage.
Created by The Electric Canvas, Wonderland was celebrated feature of the inaugural Melbourne White Night Festival. The 2014 Wonderland consists of projections that transformed the buildings of Flinders Street once the sun set; turning the brick and concrete facades of early Twentieth Century buildings such as Flinders Street Station, the Metropolitan Gas Company building, the former Commercial Travellers Club building, the former Ball and Welch Department Store, the Masonic Club building and the former Forum and Rapallo Cinemas into brilliantly coloured canvases that showed off images of magic, carnivals, amusement parks and circuses.
The White Night Festival in Melbourne is a State Government of Victoria initiative created by the Victorian Major Events Company. Originally conceived in Paris in 2002, to make vibrant and dynamic art and culture accessible to large audiences in public spaces, Paris’ Nuit Blanche (White Night) has inspired an international network of similar programmes in over twenty cities globally, including Melbourne.
In 2013 Melbourne became the first Australian city to create its own White Night Festival, producing an all night event of light, colour and artistry. The White Night Festival, now in its second year, is a wonderful opportunity to showcase Melbourne as Australia’s international city of artistic innovation, and celebrate the city’s commitment to modern and interpretive art, music and culture.
The Forum and Rapallo Cinemas, formerly the State Theatre, were designed by the American cinema architect John Eberson in association with the prominent Melbourne architects Bohringer, Taylor and Johnson in 1928. It was built at the climax of the boom years in cinema construction, and was operated by Union Theatres. It had the largest capacity of any cinema in the country with 3371 seats. Unlike most picture palaces, this form of cinema design attempted to create the illusion of an exotic walled garden in the auditorium, complete with appropriate statuary, a blue ceiling, twinkling stars and projected clouds. The interior incorporates elements of Italian medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and Spanish Mission styles combined with bold classical Roman and Renaissance architectural forms to create a lush, impossibly exotic atmosphere. Externally the building is a Moorish fantasy with a jewelled clock tower with a copper clad Saracenic dome, minarets and barley sugar columns and rich pressed cement decoration. Construction is steel frame and brick.

URBANSCREEN have taken the art of light projection, video mapping and motion graphics to extraordinary heights in their many large scale installations, including commissions from major art galleries, international festivals and opera companies. Recent works showcase their versatile and sensitive engagement with architecture, from the dream-themed 555 Kubik at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the ‘operatic staging’ of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Idomeneo, Rè di Creta at Theatre Bremen, to the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Museums Quartier in Vienna – highlighting Creative Director Thorsten Bauer’s musical approach to institutions.
The work will explore both the iconic sculptural form of the Opera House but also its place as a home for music, dance and drama, resulting in a work that is both sophisticated and spectacular." Reference
While the lightshows around the harbour are stunning it is worth noting that there is just so much more to the Vivid Sydney Festival and more than one night does need to be allocated to see all that this festival has to offer.

Vivid Sydney will colour the city with creativity and inspiration, featuring breathtaking immersive light projections on the iconic Sydney Opera House sails, performances from local and international musicians as part of Vivid LIVE and a free outdoor exhibition of interactive light sculptures.
In 2011 the festival will also include a range of artistic collaborations, public talks and debates from leading creative thinkers from Australia and around the world, celebrating Sydney as the creative hub of the Asia Pacific.

Sydney Cove was the site of the initial landing of the First Fleet in Port Jackson. In 1794 Thomas Muir, a Scottish constitutional reformer, was sentenced to transportation for sedition. Thomas Muir purchased Lightfoot's farm. Muir also had a cottage on what is now Circular Quay.
Circular Quay was originally mainly used for shipping and slowly developed into a transport, leisure and recreational centre.
Circular Quay was originally known as "Semi-Circular Quay", this being the actual shape of the quay. The name was shortened for convenience. The Circular Quay railway station was opened on 20 January 1956 and the elevated Cahill Expressway was opened on 14 March 1958.
Circular Quay is a major Sydney transport hub, with a large ferry, rail and bus interchange. The Cahill Expressway is a prominent feature of the quay, running from the east, over the elevated railway station to join the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the west.
Circular Quay was formerly a large tram terminus and interchange. As many Sydney bus routes follow the previous tram lines, the tram terminus has become a major bus terminus for many bus routes.
The railway station is the only station on the City Circle that is above ground. Additionally it is said to offer the best views of any CityRail railway station, as the platform looks out over (and is open to) the ferry terminus.
The wharf complex hosts five commuter ferry wharves and is the terminus for all public ferry routes in Sydney Harbour and the Parramatta River.
Worldwide renowned local lighting designer, Philip Lethlean created a wonderland of colourful installations of lighting treatments with visual identities by their own definition along Melbourne’s Flinders Lane and the famous Princess Bridge. Tablet Eleven was a projection that homage to the admiration generations have of digital media. It depicts two virtual stained glass windows against the back of St. Paul’s Cathedral, showing Moses holding aloft the Eleventh Commandment (an i-Pad) before an audience of people taking pictures of him with their i-phones. With over twenty years of experience across all art forms, Philip Lethlean is the principal designer for the Melbourne based company, Light Designs Australia. His works have consistently toured, with recent international projects including projections with Arabic singers in the UAE, DreamWorks and Global Creatures arena spectacular in the USA, Bali Safari and Marine Park in Indonesia and the Australian Pavilion Expo in Shanghai, China.

St. Paul’s Cathedral is high Victorian Gothic, with poly textured finish Waurn Ponds and Barrabool sandstone cladding. The horizontally striped interior derived from Siena Cathedral, is lavishly fitted out with encaustic tiled floor and wainscoting, stained glass by Clayton and Bell of London, a reredos of Derbyshire spa, Devonshire marble and Venetian glass mosaic, and furniture and fittings of Blackwood. The organ was built by T. C. Lewis, London in 1890, rebuilt in 1929 by Hill, Norman and Beard of Clifton Hill, and restored in 1989-90 by Harrison and Harrison, Durham. The Cathedral Offices of four stories in ecclesiastical Gothic style are situated between the Chapter house and the Cathedral.
