Black on Black

 

My grandmother loved me with a thick accent

spoke to me Yemeni words

I never understood,

and as a child

I remember

how scared I was to stay alone with her

out of fear that I wouldn’t understand the tongue in her mouth

which she kept singing to me with a smile.

I didn’t understand

a single word she said

the sounds far, far away

even when she spoke closely.

Once

I remember,

she bought me a pineapple yogurt

and after I punched a hole with my thumb

in the thin aluminum lid

and drank it all,

I wanted to say thank you

but didn’t know

which language to use,

so I went to the big garden

plucked a flower

and handed it to her,

sheepishly.

I remember

how much awkwardness stood between us

of one blood

and two muted tongues.

She washed the yogurt cup

silently

filled it with water

and placed the flower in it.

I never understood

a word she said,

my grandmother,

but I understood her hands

I understood her flesh

even though she never

really understood

the words I said

and simply loved my little body

the daughter of her daughter.

like to learn Yemeni

and return to her grave

contrast between the vivid happy colours and the idea of lots of those gone who found their last shelter there. There was

somethind wrong and eerie about this scene...

Surprise! This amazing sun broke through after a day of complete grayness, and I'm still not sure how it happened. If you look at the photo below this, which was taken maybe 15 minutes before, you can see the blanket of clouds. It didn't look like it could possibly break up the way it did. I was shooting the lightless landscape when Joe pointed out that the trees behind us were suddenly ablaze. I had to sprint from where I was up to this spot to capture the fleeting moment.

 

I came up with a little trick while shooting this: Lacking a reverse GND, I thought I'd try and fake it by holding my 2-stop GND upside down. Of course that would leave a visible edge if I didn't line it up perfectly, so I just jiggled the filter slightly during the exposure, blurring the hard line of the filter's edge. It worked pretty well.

The city's surroundings were filled with early spring colours ... The atmosphere was dark and your lungs could actually inhale the moisture that existed in the air ... The windless atmosphere kept the sea calm, but its dark, lightless appearance was indicating that this was only a temporary status ... The storm was about to burst and the city was preparing to welcome it ....

Mouse Woman - Tusked away in the stern the boat, still ruled by the same obsession to stay concealed in the night shadows and lightless caves… No human, beast or monster has yet seen her in the flesh, so she may or may not look like this.

If only the King had walked a few yards further north he would have had this view down over the village of Long Compton and the witch's curse wouldn't have turned him and his followers to stone...or so the tale goes.

 

Taken from the top of the low mound of an early Bronze Age burial chamber that blocks the view north from the King Stone. I think I'm stood on the capping stone which I disaprove of myself for doing, but it does give the best view of this gently rolling landscape. The village of Long Compton is hidden in the trees and cloud shadow just right of centre.

 

Where I'm stood is also one of the main watersheds of southern England (perhaps of significance to the builders of the Rollrights?)

Every drop of water falling where my toes are drains westwards to the River Severn and out into the Atlantic. The rain falling behind me drains eastward to the Thames and the North Sea.

 

I've been coming here for years and always been frustrated by gloomy flat cloud and lightless conditions so to finally find the view in near perfect conditions was a bit of a happy little jig moment...discreetly.

Photography is deffinitely an art that easily touches one's soul ... An art that can turn a rather regular scene into a carrier of thoughts and sentiments, a transporter of sometimes "precise yet indeterminate" and sometimes "vague yet concrete" messages ...

 

When I saw that scene in front of me I knew I had to capture, transform, process and present it in a rather unique manner ... A sense of corruptibility and abandonement submersed my soul and the atmosphere around this dead but still stubborn enough to remain physically connected to its "Mother" tree actually intensified this feeling ...

 

The Orton Effect that was applied to the scene after its HDR processing, in a way formed a lightless, bleary, rather lurid environment and actually turned it into a synthesis capable to convey substantial metaphysical messages and notions to the viewer ...

 

Put it on black background, sit back and let it speak to you ...

I am wearing a long bow-tied green apron on loose-fitting saffron pajamas. A perfect blend of Owaisi & Yogi Adityanath! 😃 I lie down on a stretcher for the first time in my lifetime & ushered into a cold Operation Theatre. I am told by the Anesthetist that this will prick a bit as he injects the general anesthesia into the central line on my neck. I am out to dark silence before I can do a countdown to ten.

 

The dreams of delirium begin.

I order a Cheese Pizza with a plate of Maggi Noodles. The Pizza Cutter, a mechanized small saw, whirrs into action & cuts my ego & Sternum equally, with a buzz that I somehow feel. Blood flows out of the Pizza, like tomato puree onto the shaven chest. I quiz about the pending Noodles order. They are conjured off magically from within the chest by the Magician & the blocked arteries are plumbed new.

 

I go under the water as the sea engulfs me. I sink deep in the red blood sea without a sound. I feel like an Octopus with eight different pipes flailing from various orifices, as I sink to the bottom of the sea. No sound. No pain now.

 

I wake up to a dark tunnel, the real innards of the sea. I groggily open my eyes & slowly stagger to my feet. I start walking on a railroad in the dark lightless tunnel in the direction there is faint sunlight dawning. I walk faster as the light intensity increases. Suddenly there is a train hurtling towards me. Screaming, whistling, steaming with rage towards me. I am hypnotized & can’t go off the tracks & keep on walking towards it. Out of nowhere, the real Pushpa Raj, i.e. my late brother Raju, jumps ahead of the train & stops the train with a single hand & it hisses to a sudden stop. "Oo Bolega Ya Oo oo Bolega Saala" plays softly in the ICCU.

 

Out climbs Dr. Jagdish Mange & his team & asks me how am I feeling. I nod weakly as tears can’t stop from my eyes. Raju walks away with his greatest smile & his signature flip of the hair.

 

Dreams of Delirium could be driven by the pain-relieving Opioids or just memories stored somewhere deep within the crevices of a battered heart. They need to be relived with a fresh start.

I always walk through here in the mind to take photos but it's usually lightless and the slanting floor gives me a headache composition-wise. Today it was bright and full of steam :)

The next big crash is due next year when the commercial real estate market will go bust. Nothing says "depression" like big fancy office buildings with empty parking lots and lightless windows.

Rather than traverse the Alps on winding, snowy roads, dozens of travellers park their vehicles on a train's special flatcar. Strung long with cars, the ferry-like train whizzes literally through the Alpine mountains. Passengers sit in their pitch-dark cars for most of the journey, as the train enters the mountain on the Italian side and, after 20 lightless minutes, emerges in Switzerland.
