This area was a magnificent find, delivering a few wonderful opportunities, that also treated us to a terrific evening sky. These trees appear to stand in a cluster however, they look that way because of the place I chose to stand.
Rather, they were quite far apart but display better in the image when grouped in a bundle. In the immortal words of Ansel Adams, “A good photograph is knowing where to stand.”

This is a bird that has eluded me and my camera for several years. I have had close encounters, but the speed with which this species moves around tree trunks and limbs has caused me fits. Black and White Warblers are like Nuthatches in terms of behaviour, but they tend to be wary of people, and scour the hardest to reach parts of trees - making a decent image almost impossible. They seem more like Brown Creepers to me: always moving, and never in a linear way.
I therefore feel a mix of elation and disappointment whenever I spot one: this is my chance, I think, but I can already feel the opportunity slipping away as the bird circles behind the trunk.
I saw this bird working away in a swamp near Prince Edward Point. I indicated to my friend Paul (well-aware of my frustrations with the efforts to photograph this species) that I was going to stay put. The Red Osier Dogwood that was plentiful in the swamp provided a great background, and if the bird paused, I would be ready. And I would stay as long as the bird did.
I won’t share the final total of poor quality images I came home with. It was large (I always bring extra cards for moments like these). I actually loved watching the bird hunt, and it was very successful. And it paused a few times, mostly hidden by branches, but usually down low.
And I was happy with this image. In particular, I like how the red out of focus background backstops the swampy cluster of branches, and a quick sideways shuffle enabled me to isolate the bird a bit more. Because I like habitat images a lot, this one works for me. And I remain committed for our next encounter.
I think this is a female, and a young one. The white throat and whitish cheeks are what I am relying on in saying that.
This bird was a big highlight of our trip to Pelee. We had heard reports of it out by the Lighthouse, but it was a few hours before we made it out there. Once there, we found we were in the middle of a large mixed flock of Warblers, and we fanned out along the beach. It was evening, and the sun was getting low, and we were sadly on the east side of the Island: there were very few sun-touched places. Paul found the bird, a lifer for me, and we were delighted when it found some vines in the sun. I am really thrilled to have captured the rusty-coloured markings on its back. It was hawking insects very actively, and it was a classic Warbler event, with twenty unusable images for every decent one.
At the point the Columbia river meets the Pacific Ocean is the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse in Washington state. This lighthouse was the first in the Pacific Northwest, commencing operations in 1956. This pre-dawn image was shot from Lewis and Clark National Park.

This is the last place anyone saw Jordy Dune. He tossed his surboard into the water and jumped just like everyone else did. Spectators saw his board float around the point; Jordy wasn't on it! It was reported that Mac the Great White was in the area.

In the phase of the spring migration that we experienced on Pelee Island, a couple of species were disproportionately present in the waves of migrants moving across the Island. One was a bit creepy and ultimately sad - the superabundance of Red-breasted Nuthatches, who were casualties of the change in weather - and these Gnatcatchers. I hadn’t seen one until a year or so ago, and this spring they were a presence in every mixed flock. They can be challenging to get a decent image of, as they are always on the move. I really liked this backlit image from Lighthouse Point.
I found this Lighthouse near a Restaurant on Lake Sumter in "The Villages" in Sumter County, Florida. The area is affectionately known as Lighthouse Point. I enjoyed a Lobster BLT Sandwich for diner as the Sun started to set over Lake Sumter. This is a very Beautiful area in Sumter County, Florida. There is also a Boardwalk between the Restaurant and Lake Sumter.

Snowy Egret, Lighthouse Beach, Sanibel Island, FL
The Snowy Egret (Egretta thula) is a small white heron. It is the American counterpart to the very similar Old World Little Egret, which has established a foothold in the Bahamas.
Adults are typically 61 cm long and weigh 375 g. They have a slim black bill and long black legs with yellow feet. The area of the upper bill, in front of the eyes, is yellow but turns red during the breeding season, when the adults also gain recurved plumes on the back, making for a "shaggy" effect. The juvenile looks similar to the adult, but the base of the bill is paler, and a green or yellow line runs down the back of the legs (from Wikipedia - The Free Encyclopedia).
S(h)e was the perfect model. We were about 10 photographers standing around that stump and clicking away. The egret was throwing one pose after, really funny to watch.
Paul lent me his wide angle lens to get an image looking north toward the lighthouse, which is at the northeast corner of the island. The walk up the shore to the lighthouse was a regular source of Warbler activity, as are the woods around the lighthouse.
