Patterns in the ice on Lake Butte des Morts, Terrell's Island, Omro, Wisconsin

DE197018.2

Good evening everyone. I very much hope you are all still keeping safe and well.

By day we're presently experiencing extremes of weather with thunder and very heavy rain interdispersed with varying sunny periods. Pleasingly by sunset matters often improve.

Two night's ago at 19.50pm on Wednesday 7th September 2022, luckily I was fortunate enough to capture this very colourful distant sky looking directly Westwards towards the village of Trofarth from the front of my home in Betws yn Rhos, Conwy, North Wales.

The sun had just disappeared below the horizon resulting in this 'Silhouette Profile' and beautiful sky.

As well as having any number of delightful soft shades, Dewhurst's have a wonderful range of bright colours in their range of sewing cottons like this reel of very dark blue, which is almost, but not quite navy. It been blessed with the delightful name of "Dark Lido Blue", and is one of the rarer Sylko shades to find. Drawing inspiration from the famed Lido beach in Venice, this deep indigo blue filled with warm hues and lush purple undertones is a homage to the vibrant and enchanting colours found along the Lido beach's shores.

When it was last my birthday, a very dear friend who enjoys photography as much as I do, and knows that I collect beautiful and vintage pieces, gave me a wonderful selection of antique ribbons, buttons, buckles, lace and other fine notions. She also gave me three follow up tins of similar delightful gifts for Christmas.

Those wonderful gifts are what has inspired me to create this series of "Embroider my World" images featuring my vintage bobbin collection. A little while ago I went fabric shopping at a specialist shop that has a particularly wonderful range of unusual fabrics that they sell by the quarter metre (just enough for my purposes). Amongst other pieces I bought this brilliantly blue pleated wool crepe which I have seemed the perfect way to accessorise my Dewhurst's Sylko Dark Lido Blue reel of cotton which dates from between 1938 and 1954 and a slightly smaller spool of matching Dark Lido Blue cotton from a company called the Telegraph Machine Silk Company (of which I can find no trace). Both spools go so well with the fabric. I hope you agree.

The beehive thimble is sterling silver and was made by silversmith James Fenton and Company in Birmingham in 1905. James Fenton and Company was in operation between 1854 and 1956. They were well known for their manufacture of silver and gold thimbles, and later for their silver and enamel jewellery.

Belle Vue Mill, commonly known as Dewhurst’s, was built by Thomas Dewhurst in 1828. It opened in 1829 as John Dewhurst & Sons and was one of Skipton’s largest spinning and weaving mills. The mill’s position next to the Leeds Liverpool Canal meant that raw cotton could be shipped in by boats from Liverpool. Finished goods would then be sent back the same way ready for distribution. Coal to power the machine’s steam engines was also delivered by barge. In 1897 Dewhurst’s was bought by the English Sewing Cotton Co. It continued to produce Sylko, one of the mill’s most famous products. It was produced in over 500 colours and sold throughout the world. Sylko cottons are still available at haberdashers today.

Every morning before going to school, Clotilde helped her mother by gathering the freshly laid eggs from the family’s hen house. Still warm, the eggs she gathered from amidst the nests of straw and stray feathers made by their hens were white or brown, sometimes delicately speckled and sometimes not. Then, one morning, close to Easter Sunday, as she hunted around the hen house, Clotilde found a different egg nestled comfortably in the straw, surrounded by feathers of red, bronze and yellow. The egg was a delicate shade of blue, and rather than speckled, it was dimpled all over, like a dew covered leaf. Clotilde gasped as she admired it with reverence as it sparkled and shimmered in the morning sunlight. As she looked at it, she saw the egg move and heard a crack like glass splintering. Carefully Clotilde crouched down to wait and see what fantastic, magical bird would be forthcoming from within the surprising egg she discovered.

Easter represents hope, as do eggs, which also bring the promise of good things to come. Easter eggs symbolise hope, new life, resurrection, and fertility, aligning with both pagan and Christian interpretations of the holiday. We all need hope in the world today, and a reason to smile, find beauty and joy. My wish for you, is that you experience and find all these things!

This egg is actually a wonderful dimpled European glass ornament which I hang along with its pink counterpart every Easter. A friend sends me box of Haigh’s chocolate Easter Eggs every year. One year when I went to throw out the box, I rediscovered that it was full of shredded paper packaging, which reminded me of a nest. Inspired, I fetched my blue glass egg and nestled it amongst the paper, but it needed something to make the nest more homely, so I sprinkled around a few of my feathers from my feather collection. I then took the box with nest outside and photographed it in the mid morning sun.

SAPPHIRE: “Daddy! Daddy come quickly!”

DADDY: “What is it, sweet Sapphire? Are you alright?”

SAPPHIRE: “Oh yes, Daddy! I’m fine!” *Giggles.*

DADDY: “Then why did you call for me, sweetheart?”

SAPPHIRE: “Because I wanted to show you the treasure I found whilst I was playing in the garden!” *Excited.* “Look!” *Holds up a shard of pottery.*

DADDY: “Oh that’s a very pretty piece of blue and white Calico Ware, Sapphire! It looks quite old too. Where did you find it?”

SAPPHIRE: “Buried in the ground over there!” *Points paw to where it came from.* “Which I suppose makes it buried treasure!”

DADDY: “Yes indeed, Sapphire! That’s a wonderful and exciting find!”

SAPPHIRE: “May I keep it, Daddy and show everybear?”

DADDY: “Yes, so long as it has no sharp edges, Sapphire. I don’t want you cutting your little paws!!”

SAPPHIRE: “Oh no, Daddy! It has smooth, rounded edges.”

DADDY: “Then you may keep it, Sapphire.”

SAPPHIRE: “Oh thank you, Daddy! I’m going to go and show everybear my new un-buried treasure!”

The theme for for "Looking Close… on Friday" for Friday 6th of June is "bokeh in blue", where I decided to use Sapphire. Sapphire is one of my miniature bear family. She is a little Russ Bear of royal blue plush with leather paws who arrived on Christmas Day 2023 – a gift from my friend BKHagar *Kim* I have photographed her sitting with a piece of Victorian era Calico Ware that I did indeed dig up from my garden. It’s the only piece I have ever found. She is sitting on the glass topped table on my back terrace, which has a blue tint to it, and is wonderful for creating a sparkling bokeh background. I hope you like my choice of subject for this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile!

they say that creating things is instantly addictive. I can't agree more.

I tried promising myself not to do any crafts during finals, but I just couldn't help it!

This Christmas bauble was hand beaded with sequins and pins by me. I have a Christmas tradition. I bead Christmas baubles for a select group of friends every year. In this case they are for a friend, who like me, elects blue as her favourite colour.

Each bauble is 15 centimetres in diameter and contain hundreds of sequins, varying in number depending upon the complexity of the pattern and the type of sequins I use. Most sequins in this bauble are 5mm in diameter, except the large butterflies which are 12mm and the central flower which is 8mm. Depending upon the colour of the sequin, I will use either a gold or a silver pin to attach it to the bauble. I always leave the flowers and stars until last, allowing a gap in the sequin chain to pin them in.

These baubles are smaller than some others I do, however because it is a complex pattern which starts from the inside and is worked outwards in ever larger circles, each bauble takes approximately 2 to 2 1/2 hours per side.

It is however, a labour of love which I do to pass the time throughout the year.

Last moments of a sunset over the Nile.

It’s interesting how the cloud formations played with the light and colors, creating different shades in the sky.

The breeze it wrapped around me

As I stood there on the shore

And listened to this voice

Like I never heard before

Our battles they may find us

No choice may ours to be

But hold the banner proudly

The truth will set us free

She also gave me three follow up tins of similar delightful gifts for Christmas.

This then inspired me to create the current series of bobbins, of which this is the latest one. However this time the bobbin, antique lace and vintage 1930s embroidered Art Deco floral ribbon were already mine. I have accessorised them on a 1930s embroidered doily with a Dewhurst's Sylko Forget-Me-Not Blue reel of cotton which dates from between 1938 and 1954.

Belle Vue Mill, commonly known as Dewhurst’s, was built by Thomas Dewhurst in 1828. It opened in 1829 as John Dewhurst & Sons and was one of Skipton’s largest spinning and weaving mills.
