Son et lumière (French, lit. "sound and light"), or a sound and light show is a form of nighttime entertainment that is usually presented in an outdoor venue of historic significance. Special lighting effects are projected onto the façade of a building or ruin and synchronized with recorded or live narration and music to dramatize the history of the place. The invention of the concept is credited to Paul Robert-Houdin, who was the curator of the Château de Chambord in France, which hosted the world's first son et lumière in 1952. Another was established in the early 1960s at the site of the Great Pyramid at Giza, Egypt.

This night time medium naturally lends itself to ecclesiastical buildings, stately homes and ruins, and has rapidly become very popular in France where about 50 annual productions take place, principally in the Loire Valley, at the Palace of Versailles and at Les Invalides in Paris.

Essentially the format involves no active participation by actors but a recorded narrative of the history of the building concerned by one or a cast of voices. To this is added music or sound effects as appropriate, all of which is synchronised to lighting effects which provide the visual dimension. Pyrotechnic effects are occasionally included to give added spectacle.

A relatively recent variation is that, rather than the music and narration coming through a concert-like sound system, they may use headsets, such as in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania's "Lights of Liberty". This allows an audience to move through a historic district as the show proceeds.

Playing with my Jawa Brickheadz and my old light & sound system from set 6780 to improve its... mesmerizing gaze :) :)

Usually when I motorize a LEGO set, I try to change as few visible things as possible, but I was never really happy about LEGO's tumbler, the way they build the armor plates was just too flat and even worse in the new set from 2021. So I updated them to get closer to the polygon shapes in the movie, while trying to keep up the overall style of the set. I also fixed the winglet holders and made the roof retractable. If you are interested, I uploaded instructions on rebrickable

Another RC Motorication, the LEGO DeLorean from 2021. There was so few space for the wheels that I had to develop a special steering mechanism, but it works. I made instructions.

Dive into the magical, ethereal world of teamLab Borderless in Tokyo, where art transcends boundaries and invites you to step into a universe of shimmering light and infinite imagination. The photograph captures a mesmerizing section of the “Crystal World,” an iconic installation composed of thousands of LED light strands that cascade like shimmering rain. These dynamic lights pulse, ripple, and shift in mesmerizing patterns, creating a constantly evolving tapestry of color and motion. The pink hues in this particular scene evoke a dreamlike ambiance, immersing visitors in a surreal, otherworldly experience.

TeamLab Borderless isn’t just a museum—it’s a labyrinth of interconnected spaces where art comes alive and responds to your presence. Here, every step you take alters the flow of light, encouraging a deeply personal interaction with the digital environment. Reflections on mirrored floors and walls amplify the effect, creating an illusion of infinite depth that blurs the line between the physical and the virtual.

This enchanting exhibit is part of teamLab’s larger philosophy of borderless art—a concept that breaks down traditional barriers between artwork, space, and audience. It’s an Instagram-worthy dreamscape but also a profound exploration of human connection and natural phenomena. Whether you're walking among the dazzling light curtains, marveling at interactive projections, or simply soaking in the ambiance, the Crystal World is an unforgettable highlight of Tokyo’s vibrant art scene.

Pro tip: Visit during off-peak hours for a more immersive experience, and wear comfortable shoes, as you’ll be wandering through a labyrinth of light, sound, and wonder. Prepare to lose yourself—both figuratively and literally—in this spectacular digital art realm.

Bangkok / Thailand 4D Light & Sound Installation by Philipp Geist

Place: Ananta Smakhom Throne Hall (Bangkok / Thailand)

Date: 5th December - 13rd December 2009

Berlin artist Philipp Geist (33) shows video installation on the facade of the royal throne in Bangkok on the occasion of king Bhumibol's 82nd birthday from Dec 5-13, 2009.

The one-hour-show is the central part of the celebrations and will be seen by thousands of visitors. It interprets artistically the king's life and his work dedicated to public welfare. The art installation combines images of the king and his social projects in the past and present with 3-D-animations of Thai natural and cultural heritage and abstract-painterly passages.

The artist Philipp Geist:

'I feel honoured to be invited to Bangkok to contribute my work to this very special occasion. The organizers were searching for an artist who has already gained experience in creating big facade installations and who simultaneously has an artistic approach to the representation of diverse cultural themes. By mixing figurative and abstract-pictorial film sequences I want to symbolize the succesful combination of tradition and modernism in the king's work. I translated natural and cultural characteristics, which I have researched and photographed on visiting Thailand, into my own imagery and embedded them into partly minimal-purist, partly colourful, dreamlike and intangibly fragile compositions.'

The facade installation responds to the 3-dimensionality of the throne, highlights the architectural structure and neutralizes it again. What is emerging is an interplay between the depth of the building, figurative elements, abstract forms and various rhythms, colours and structures.

The 3-D-animations were created on the computer together with WeAreChopChop & VfxBase. The mapping of the images, which is the precise tailoring of the total composition to the facade, was developed with a partner organisation from France (Digital Slaves). The projection using state-of-the-art computer- and light technologies and the most powerful video projectors available is realized by the technical partner of the last Olympic Games in China. Part of the show is also a documentary of the king prepared by a team from Thailand. The concept and coordination of the festivity is carried out by the creative agencies Kaiser Communications and Fresh Air Festival from Bangkok.

A big orchestra of 128 international musicians, which has been assembled solely for this purpose, and a choir of 100 persons perform together with the light show. A diverse programme including dance performances guarantees a gigantic, singular experience.

Philipp Geist has realized many facade installations internationally. In 2007, he projected on the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, a museum of modern art in Rome, and in 2008, he realized an installation on the complete piazetta of the Berlin Kulturforum on the occasion of the Long Museum Nights. In 2010, a facade installation and a solo exhibition in Richmond/USA are to follow, as well as a facade installation in Montreal/Canada.

Artist concept facade installation by Studio Philipp Geist
