Umsobomvu Youth Fund seeks to support and develop South Africa’s youth by offering life skills training that will tap into their unexplored potential.

In January 2009, DEVELOPMENT WORKS was selected by Umsobomvu Youth Fund as one of the service providers that would provide training to Umsobomvu-funded projects, groups and individuals.

Two members of the DEVELOPMENT WORKS team took part in a structured facilitation programme.

An innovative therapeutic community is opening its doors to men who have repeat experiences with incarceration, homelessness and addiction. Our Place Society offers a peer-supported therapeutic recovery community for residents to develop life skills, tackle addictions and receive holistic care.

Honor Empathizing Acts By Children.

Acknowledge and praise your child for empathizing with others. Emphasizing and encouraging compassionate behavior inspires more of it in the future.

Be precise while praising: "You went and got a Band-Aid for her scraped knee so she could feel better. That was extremely helpful and kind!" Or just say that "helping your mom in the kitchen reduced her time and helped her go to the office on time."

Read Stories

Teaching empathy through characters is the best way to do it. Children offer love to imitate their favorite characters and if they are empathizing with the stories, what can be better than that? Choose the stories wisely though.

Teach Social Skills In The Exact Moment.

Ask your daughter if she snatches a toy from her little brother "How do you think your brother feels? How do you feel when he steals your toys?" At this point, you could teach your daughter more appropriate ways to request a toy, like by asking for a turn, bartering, or trying another item while she waits. When social skills are taught in a context, children learn them far more quickly.

Use Visuals.

Visual aids are yet another fantastic method for teaching kids different aspects of empathizing. Use images of sad, angry, or joyful faces if your kid appears to struggle with emotion recognition and/or labeling. You can gradually progress to more difficult feelings like fear, embarrassment, disappointment, frustration, etc.

Children might be questioned about times they experienced similar emotions while you talk about how the people in the photos are experiencing. Give personal examples to illustrate that even adults experience strong emotions and that this is entirely normal.

In Home Ec class on Monday, the girls learned how to attach sequins and beads to a project as well as learned a new embroidery stitch: the back stitch.

After Sophia sewed the sequins/beads on, she did the backstitch around the bookmark. She'll finish it off by blanket-stitching another piece of felt to the back.

2005 Downtown Eastside Photography Contest

DESCRIPTION: Harvey and Lora Bellrose are both from Peace River, Alberta and both belong to the Cree First Nation. Harvey has lived in the Downtown Eastside since 1975, while Lora moved to the neighbourhood in 1990. Lora works at the LifeSkills Centre on Cordova Street, facilitating HIV support groups. They are pictured next to the Memorial Totem Pole in Oppenheimer Park. The 30-foot totem pole, which incorporates symbols of significance to many First Nations, was carved in 1997 as a symbol of strength and courage for those who have lost family and friends in the Downtown Eastside.

PHOTOGRAPHER BIO: Duncan Murdoch is a member of the Swan River First Nation in Northern Alberta. He has lived in the Downtown Eastside for 25 years. He noted the foreground of the picture actually has three faces, including the Moon on the totem pole. The Moon is the First Nations’ protector and guardian of the Earth by night.
