The past is a gentle ripple, spreading out across time, its origins fading but its echoes still felt. Each moment left behind is like a soft light glimmering on the surface of memory—both present and distant, beautiful yet untouchable. These reflections of "what was" remind us that the past is not a place we can revisit, but a story we carry within us, shaping our paths forward.

In the stillness of the present, there is an opportunity to pause. The lessons of yesterday rest quietly beneath the surface, offering their wisdom if we dare to look. The present becomes a mirror, where the line between remembrance and reality blurs, and we see fragments of who we were in who we are.

"Past Tense, Present Reflection" invites us to reconcile those ripples and rays of memory with the now—to honor the echoes without being pulled under by their current. It is a call to embrace the stillness, to watch the interplay of light and shadow within ourselves, and to find peace in the seamless union of then and now. For in that unity lies the serenity of understanding who we’ve been and who we’re becoming.

The Enchanted Path weaves through the tapestry of our lives, a mystical trail where every twist and turn holds the whisper of magic. Along this journey, amidst the mundane routines and everyday trials, there exists a hidden enchantment waiting to be discovered. It's the serendipitous encounters that lead us down unexpected avenues, the moments of inspiration that ignite our souls, and the inexplicable synchronicities that defy rational explanation. Often, we walk this path unaware of the subtle forces guiding our steps, yet they shape our destinies in ways we cannot fathom. It's in the quiet whispers of the wind, the gentle nudges of intuition, and the subtle signs that illuminate our way. Though we may not always recognize it, there is a profound magic at work, threading through the fabric of our existence, reminding us that our journey is far more enchanted than we dare to believe.

Imagine standing at a crossroads, the air filled with the scent of possibility. You gaze down the winding pathway ahead, its destination obscured by the gentle mist of uncertainty. You don't know where it leads, only that it ventures forth to "some place else." Will it be a journey filled with laughter and sunshine, or one fraught with shadows and storms? Such mysteries lie beyond the bend, hidden in the folds of time yet to unfurl. But as you stand there, pondering the enigma of the road ahead, one thing becomes clear: you cannot linger in the comfort of the present. Life beckons you forward, urging you to take that first step into the great unknown, where the tales of your future await their telling.

The atmosphere by the seashore possesses an unparalleled ability to soothe the soul, offering a refuge from life's uncertainties. The rhythmic melody of waves against the shore creates a symphony of tranquility, gently lulling worries away. The salty breeze caresses the skin, carrying with it a sense of serenity and renewal. There's a profound sense of connection to something greater than oneself. In these moments, even when the future feels uncertain, there's a deep reassurance found in the constancy of the sea, a reminder that like its tides, life ebbs and flows, though much of it stretches beyond our view over the horizon.

Seasonal juxtaposition encapsulates the striking interplay between two contrasting seasons within a single moment or scene. It's the sight of vibrant autumn leaves scattered against a backdrop of freshly fallen snow, or the scent of spring flowers blooming amidst the lingering chill of winter. This juxtaposition creates a unique visual and sensory experience, highlighting the beauty of transition and the coexistence of opposites. It evokes a sense of wonder and introspection, reminding us of the cyclical nature of time and the ever-changing tapestry of life. In these moments, we witness the harmonious dance of past and future, of endings and beginnings, all within the same frame of existence.

Where the river runs, life's story unfolds in fluid motion. It carves its path, a serpentine journey through the heart of the land, carrying with it the essence of time. Like a wandering troubadour, it weaves tales of the earth, whispering secrets to the banks it caresses. The river mirrors the ebbs and flows of existence, mirroring the trials and triumphs encountered along the way. Its current, a steady force, encapsulates the essence of resilience and adaptability, navigating obstacles, sculpting the terrain, and symbolizing the ceaseless passage of moments. In its waters lie reflections of life’s journey — a reminder that as the river runs, so does the narrative of our lives, ever-flowing and ever-evolving.

The pathway ahead stretches before us like a trail flanked by water, a journey where each step is a reflection of our choices and aspirations. On either side, the waters of uncertainty and possibility glisten, mirroring the ever-changing currents of life. With each stride, we navigate this liquid boundary, where challenges ripple and dreams drift like boats on the horizon. The path is an adventure, a bridge between the known and the uncharted, where our determination becomes the vessel that carries us forward. And as we continue along this aqueous thoroughfare, we're reminded that, just like the water's eternal flow, our journey is defined not only by the destination but by the profound experiences and discoveries made along the way.

captured in palmanova, this image vividly illustrates the silent stories of two couples seated by the beach, their contrasting body language revealing the dynamics of their relationships. on the right, a couple sits closely with their legs angled towards each other, symbolizing a connection that has endured over time. their bodies lean slightly inward, indicating mutual interest and affection. in contrast, the couple on the left displays a different story; they sit apart with their bodies and legs turned away from each other, suggesting lives that have grown separate. each person seems lost in their own world, embodying a sense of isolation despite their physical proximity. the serene backdrop of sunbathers and gentle waves adds a layer of irony, as the beach's tranquility contrasts with the subtle emotional distance on the bench, showcasing how love can both thrive and wane over the years.

and with Rousseau’s call to get “Back to Nature”

The exhibition in the gallery was arranged in themed sections:

The Discovery of Nature; Life’s Journey; The Artist’s Wanderings; The Promenaders; Italy – Land of Longing; and Landscapes of Wandering North of the Alps.

When we think of the Wanderer as a painterly motif, the famous painting "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog" by Caspar David Friedrich comes to mind. This exceptional loan from the Hamburger Kunsthalle Art Museum formed the starting point for this special exhibition held at the Old National Gallery in Berlin.

With its solitary male figure high atop a rocky peak, Caspar David Friedrich's oil painting "Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog" is still regarded worldwide as a symbol of German Romanticism.

Mounted on a craggy rock, the figure stands in contemplation and self reflection;by placing his back toward the viewers,he is not shutting them out,he enables them to see the world through his own eyes,to share and convey his personal experience. The haze over the horizon is the unforeseen future, the extrasensory world beyond the reach of the senses, and the vastness before him,is the sublimity of nature, her sheer power with her converging, untrodden paths, watercourses,wide-open spaces, gorges, and snowclad mountain summits.Caspar David Friedrich considered the painting his great magnum opus.

Wandering is a basic human desire,we're looking at the actual movement through nature, the courage to set off on an adventure and allow new experiences to come to us throughout the journey of our life. It's the urgent need to travel,to live,to wander,to observe ...

PS: During the division of Germany, all the 19th-century paintings that had survived the war in Western zones of occupation were housed in the New National Gallery and in the Charlottenburg Palace Gallery of Romanticism. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the growing collections are accommodated in the Old National Gallery.

the photograph captures a fleeting slice of time on the streets of aix's old town, a study in light and life passing by. a man walks alone, his figure etched in sharp relief against the ancient stones that have stood witness to countless such passings. the sunlight dances upon the architecture, sketching stories that hang in the air just as the sign rue fauchier whispers its own. amidst this timeless ballet, the man's shadow stretches long and telling, a silent companion to his thoughts, a fluid echo on the cobbles that have known so many footsteps.

An upward view of a towering tree captures the essence of life's journey, where each branching path represents choices, challenges, and growth. The climb to the highest branches reflects the ultimate spiritual pursuit—a testament to resilience, perseverance, and the beauty of striving toward the light.

Never stop dreaming.

Reaching the peak,

Makes the journey even more rewarding.

Life has changed quite drastically in the last few month. I became very sick, and decided that I needed to take care of myself, so I retired from my job. I am now in limbo, trying to figure out who I am at this new stage. I have been working since I was 13 years old, well over 50 years. For most of those years I have been in charge either of some ones business or my own, my whole adult identity was wrapped up in who I was as a working person. I had a few years of not working, I was going to university, or traveling through the States and Canada, mostly to study, or to be involved in some kind of protest movement. But now I have no place to hang my hat, no identity other that as retired, nobody even cares what I am retired from, it is like being dismissed from my entire life, like my endeavors are now not interesting or worthy of inquiry. So, with less income, an ailing mother, an illness that flares up regularly, and no idea of who I am, where do I go from here.

This is not a sad picture, actually I was laughing, but I went into a bit of a ponder when my dear friend Mikul snapped this.

This is a portrait of my mother in law, taken on a steam train journey recently - she is 85.

I was quite moved by the face in the reflection and can only imagine what might have been passing through her mind.

Her father used to work on the railways so her childhood was tied in with the history of steam and the demise of the branch lines.

It also made me more aware of some of the feelings that older people may have as they realise they are much closer to the end of their life than the beginning. I wonder if you begin to think - 'this may be the last time I ever....'

This little branch line is still in use for steam trains and the building is still used and cared for by volunteers

I have so titled this blend 'Life's Journey' because of the dead tree in the front and the new life on the perimeter and the clouds obstructing the journey. The lines in the field could be the different paths we choose to take, some are clearer than others. The dead tree in front represents that certainty but with every certainty there is uncertainty. The universe in balance.

Every footstep is the beginning of a journey, every journey is an adventure, step into 2011 and live that adventure on your lifes journey xx

The award-winning author of 28 books for children and young adults, Jan Slepian expresses her sentiment and insight on being old in her first-ever collection of verse, continuing the themes of getting and being old she published previously in two collections of essays, both of which were adapted for the stage. What is familiar in this collection of 30 poems is the author's voice of wit and humor.
