A FACE THAT ONLY A MOTHER COULD LOVE :-)
One of the three that I stalked this day eventually wandered over to my boot, twitched his nose while smelling my boot, hesitated for a second, used his huge tail to propel himself into their comical startled jump while turning away from me and then ran away as fast as he could (i.e. not very) :-)
Armadillos are very strange creatures. You can sneak up on them with no trouble as long as you only move when they have their heads down while rooting around for insects and invertebrates such as beetles, cockroaches, wasps, yellow jackets, fire ants, scorpions, spiders, snails, and white grubs. A lesser part of the diet is comprised of small reptiles and amphibians and mammal, reptile, and bird eggs. Less than 10 percent of the diet is from fruit, seeds, fungi, and other plant matter. The 9 banded Armadillos are the only ones that live in the states. They have moved progressively north over 100 years and it has been very obvious during my lifetime. Originally, I only found them in Louisiana and Texas but now they are all over the southeast and have been found as far north as Illinois.
Even though people have been known to eat them, any significant contact should be avoided as Armadillos are source of leprosy in the U.S. south. The nine-banded was nicknamed “Hoover hog” and “poor man’s pork” by people who blamed President Hoover for the Great Depression.
Texas Aggies appreciate a joke about themselves more than any other group and one once asked me how many Aggies it took to eat an armadillo, I told him that I didn't know - His answer was 2, one to eat it and one to direct traffic. Their startled jump is their undoing when cars pass over them and they jump up into the undercarriage and become the south's most frequent road kill.

Having a warm cup of coffee on a chilly desert morning before the Clinton "Health Matters" conference starts: back row, managing editor Vani Rangachar, video producer John Sylvain, and editor-in-chief Laurie Berger; front row, entertainment editor Mari Cartel and chief medical officer Edward Geehr
Noel Bairey Merz, M.D., director of the Women’s Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, speaking at the Clinton "Health Matters" Conference in La Quinta, Calif, this morning: “Women need to know that heart disease is their biggest health care threat, to themselves and to their families. [We need policies that allow] the women in all of our lives to help our families eat their fruits and vegetables and do the exercise.”
The Lifescript team got plenty of equipment ready to bring stories from the Clinton "Health Matters" conference in La Quinta, California.
Some of our staff, all meeting on Friday. We all went to various areas of the floor, then met again to share our favorites. From left: Emily, Nicole, Carrie, Eva, and Vani -- you might recognize them from the blog!
Project manager Alex Friend and entertainment editor Mari Cartel roved the floor with camera, equipment and microphones to capture great video of industry-respected health experts. Visit HealthBistro.Lifescript.com to see the finished products!
Editors Nicole and Emily tasted their way across the five halls and two floors to find all kinds of new foods and products for you. (Tough job, but someone's gotta do it, right?)
Maria Owings Shriver the 55 year old Peabody award winning journalist author has pleaded for compassion, respect and privacy in the aftermath of her marriage breakdown and separation from bodybuilder actor Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger. Shriver a member of the Kennedy clan was responding to the painful heartbreak resulting from the media coverage to the revelation that her husband had fathered a child 10 years earlier with a long time member of their household staff Mildred Baena. The media hyped ‘love child’ was born just days after Shriver gave birth to one of Schwarzenegger’s sons. Apart from the morality of Schwarzenegger’s actions and the consequences of his secrecy, questions now arise as to the ethics, and issues of consent in the nature of a potentially coercive relationship an employer has with household staff. A pomegranate tree is relatively small--usually around 12 to 16 feet tall--and can live up to
100 years or more. It produces a thin-skinned fruit full of small seeds that are surrounded
by sweet flesh. It is valued for eating fresh and for making fresh juice. Although the trees
originated in the Middle East, they are grown worldwide in warm climates where
temperatures stay above 20 degrees Fahrenheit. In Texas, pomegranates are not a widely
grown commercial crop, so there are no recommended varieties there. If you want to grow
pomegranate trees in Texas, you might try several different varieties to see which grows
best and produces the sweetest fruit. Read more: How to Grow Pomegranate Trees in

Pity the poor pomegranate. This homely red fruit isn’t going to win any produce-aisle beauty
contests. But don’t be put off by looks. Here are 5 life-saving reasons (including cancer
prevention) to crack one open. Plus, try 2 delicious recipes, and take our quiz to find out if
you’re a health food nut… Pomegranates may be taking off in the U.S., but they’ve been a
staple fruit in the Middle East for thousands of years. In fact, the Bible mentions it more
than two dozen times. But it’s not the royal fruit’s rich history that has us picking up
pomegranates. The odd-looking baseball-sized fruit is packed with vitamins and nutrients,
and scientists are studying its role in fighting heart disease, cancer and other ailments.

April 2011: Newsletter Highlight: "Getting Involved at the High School Level."
In 2011, Newport Beach, CA high school students and FIMRC chapter founders Cameron Geehr and Lauren Bartolic worked toward providing Project Kodaikanal in India with 6,700 high protein meal packs for the crèches in which FIMRC works.
Thanks to the efforts of Cameron and Lauren and the generosity of Lifescript.com, we were able to supply our site with something terribly necessary.

This is the Ginger-Orange Biscotti that I made today in its in-between form. Next up: wait until it cools, then slice it diagonally and bake it some more!
