Life can not be told, I've already said, life is lived, and while the living is already lost, ran away.

"BROUGHT TO YOU BY PUEBLO NUEVO GALLERY, EIGB, ESTRIA INTERNATIONAL GRAFFITI BATTLE AND LIFEISLIVING.ORG."

Sifu Kate Hobbs in Process

February 2011

paint pen, oil pastel, spray enamel, on Non Woven Media.

When I painted, I used the collaborative coloring as starting points and a framework for the palette. I made sure to leave notes from others who colored, or areas of dynamic use of the pastel. When you look at this up close, there are countless personal stories. From far away the variety of marks gives the image an energetic texture. I tried to honor the many contributions of color and form and at the same time reflect the spirit of the person in the portrait.

Sifu Kate Hobbs holds the rank of fifth degree Black Belt in the Gaylord Method of Kajukenbo Kung Fu. She currently studies Chi Gung, Tai Chi, and Northern Shaolin Kung Fu under Sifu Michelle Dwyer. She has spent much of her time as a Black Belt focusing on how martial arts can help young people face the violence and injustice they encounter with power and intelligence. She has worked on curriculum for community-based and school-based programs that teach specific tools for conflict resolution, violence prevention and community building for youth aged three to eighteen. She was cofounder of Oakland’s famous Destiny Arts Center, and the national youth play organization Sports for Kids (now known as Playworks). www.oaklandkajukenbo.com/

Reflections of Healing is a multi-faceted process of community building that

includes the collaborative development of 24 large-scale public works featuring Bay Area residents – who through practice or legacy demonstrate healing. The project culminates with temporary and permanent installation of the works across the city of Oakland, CA in 2010-2013

Reflections comes from my evolving conception of collaboration and art making as a framework for transformation that includes social relevance and localized solutions. To this end, it celebrates community healers who reflect the immediate location of the work’s installation while providing a public, non-commercial venue showcasing participatory projects. As an artist who has worked extensively in educational settings, the selection of prominent Oakland models pictured at 15 years of age emphasizes the collective potential of youth in the creation of loving community.

The public installations, both temporary and permanent, will celebrate and document significant Oakland residents and their practice or legacy of healing. Located in neighborhoods of Oakland, the installations will include a variety of media and materials documenting the ethnographic, pedagogical, and creative processes of building loving community and healing through the social collaboration that is Reflections of Healing.

In addition, the works will be used in the set for Marc Bamuthi Joseph’s full-evening performance work “red, black and GREEN: a blues”, which will premier at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (SF) in October 2011, and will be presented at the Walker Arts Center (Minneapolis), The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts (Houston), and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Reflections of Healing is anchored in LIFE is LIVING (LiL), a national initiative that establishes a new model for partnerships between diverse and under-resourced communities, green action agencies, and the contemporary arts world. LIL has carried out audience development through the lens that combines a focus on community development, and a celebratory promotion of life in urban communities.

I'm slowly (really slowly) uploading my shots from the Estria Battle/Life is Living festival.

I stopped to tell these girls how awesome they looked, and they told me I looked great, too! That was so sweet and so unnecessary, but I knew they'd let me take their picture. They made sure to tell me (as did a mom present) that they were performers. They had already done one set and were going to do another. Unfortunately, I missed both.

Another awesome part of the event!

Reflections of Healing is a multi-faceted process of community building that includes the collaborative development of large-scale public works featuring Bay Area residents pictured as adolescents – who through practice or legacy demonstrate healing. The project reflects new definitions of youth identity while producing an Oakland-wide installation that celebrates past, present, and future models of healing.

The eight portraits were started in October 2010 when they were colored by hundreds of hands at Lil' Bobby Hutton Park (deFremery Park) in West Oakland as part of the LIFE is LIVING (LiL) Festival. LiL is a national initiative that establishes a new model for partnerships between diverse and under-resourced communities, green action agencies, and the contemporary arts world.

Reflections of Healing includes 8 portraits of Oakland healers installed May - September 2011 at Oakland Public Library Branches and at 2930 Telegraph. Their locations are:

Lil’ Bobby Hutton – 2930 Telegraph, 2930 Telegraph Avenue, Oakland, Ca

Sifu Kate Hobbs - Rockridge Branch, 5366 College Avenue, Oakland, Ca

Favianna Rodriguez - Cesar E. Chavez Branch, 3301 E. 12th Street #271, Oakland, Ca

Bryant Terry - West Oakland Branch, 1801 Adeline Street #1, Oakland, Ca

Nicole Lee and John Santos - 81st Avenue Branch, 1021 81st Avenue, Oakland, Ca

Chinaka Hodge and Larry Yang - Eastmont Branch, Eastmont Town Center, 7200 Bancroft Ave #211, Oakland

Spent a long time with this girl talking about her new (old) camera, and showing her how to use it. It was her first day out with it, and she was pretty pumped. She is a writer, also, and had brought her black book along to the battle, like any smart artist.

Laibach 🇸🇮 @ Opera club, St Petersburg, Russia, 09.10.2018

We Come in Peace.

В 2018 ожидаемый аншлаг в Опере, где «все тоже дико круто угорели, например» под #electro #martial #industrial с #avant переходами была представлена новая пластинка — The Sound of Music, 2018 с их версией саундтрека одноимённого муз фильма 1965 года, с хитом So Long, Farewell (получившего 5 Оскаров и снятого по бродвейскому мюзиклу, в основе которого книга — The Story of the Trapp Family Singers) — ведь когда дискография насчитывает >20 разноплановых альбомов, начало которой затеряно во Вселенной 80-х, то играть уже можно всё что угодно.

Sympathy for the Devil (The Rolling Stones, 1968) и финишировали вторым бисом с Leben heißt Leben — индустриальным кавером на мегахит австрийской группы Opus — Live Is Life (1985), так что не только лишь все оказались в экстазе и так.

Estria Invitational Graffiti Battle

The Estria Graffiti Battle Finals last week were combined with the Life Is Living Festival, and it was amazing. This little guy was part of a group, Young Gifted and Black, and they were- he was.

He sang a short piece by himself, and I think the whole crew watching was bawling. He was incredibly poised, incredibly moving, and such a huge soul in such a tiny body. Days like October 8th give me hope for Oakland. More to come.

The innovative use of an array of materials in Reflections of Healing process by participants of all abilities reflects a complex conceptual architecture. The selection of diverse models redirects portraiture’s conventional habits of highlighting pedigreed subjects. The fact that the artworks were made by thousands of participants enhances the objects into something gem-like, illuminating, and brimming with narrative possibilities.

Focusing on portraits of community champions when they were adolescents, the project reflects new definitions of youth identity while producing a city-wide installation that celebrates past, present, and future models of healing.

Oakland's Defremery Park has a special place in Oakland history because of the role it played in the late 60s to convene Oakland's black community in defense of Huey P. Newton when he was charged for the murder of a police officer. Town Park's history is relatively recent but the spirit of the Black Panthers struggles for equal protection and civic participation is not lost since the funds to build out Town Park were raised by and for the West Oakland community. Empowering projects like this are remarkable because they also empower those who both work on and benefit from opening public space.

Taken during one of Oakland's most meaningful, community driven festivals, Life Is Living, this set captures the dynamic energy and form. Beside the main stage, good food, and healthy, balanced living theme, I often visit to see the Extreme sports that go on in a section of Defremery Park known as Town Park. In true gonzo photography fashion, what the camera froze on frame shows that the lens is an active participant in the way subject's act and react in front of it. I went of my way to publish some of these because it was evident the young men in them went out of their way to give me fabulous shots. I was very appreciative of their "hard skating" and the way they tolerated an intruding eye as they glide and bust tricks on their magic carpets.

John Santos and Nicole Lee with Reflections of Healing Process Banner and list of interview questions

Oakland Public Library 21st Avenue Branch,

81st Avenue, Oakland CA, May – September 2011

Participant interview questions:

What does healing have to do with social justice?

Why the emphasis on Healing?

Where does it hurt?

How do we learn to love ourselves so we can be channels of inner peace?

What lives would we live if our Freedom (and Happiness) were not dependent upon external circumstances?

What is the difference between healing and coping, and are we more prone to (or programmed for) one or the other and why?

When someone you trust inflicts pain upon you what are your strategies for self-healing?

How can we replace prevailing notions of aging with new ideas and images that imagine people becoming more whole and healthy as they get older?
