Zorro is coming along nicely, now 14 weeks and 3 days old.

Female Sarplaninac named Medve (Translates to Bear in English) at 2 months of age. She's the dominant puppy in this litter and having seen her in action at this tender young age, she's going to be a formidable livestock guardian dog as an adult.

Tibor watching over his sheep and goats with two of his Sarplaninac livestock guardian dogs. The little brown dog is a Jagdterrier. He hangs around with the LGD's but his job is not to protect the flock.

Both wolves and bears try to take sheep but bears are by far the biggest problem for Tibor as they pose a constant daily threat.

He just loves the cold and snow. In his element at -6 degrees Celsius in the forest this morning.

Zorro our 16 week old Sarplaninac shepherd dog was very happy this morning to see the return of the snow.

Is something we take pretty seriously.

Update: Photo credit, M. Rabbit. We were handing the camera back and forth, and this is one of her shots.

Tibor has a flock of sheep that varies in size but is anything up to 600 strong after the lambing season. Here he is with part of his pack of livestock guardian and herding dogs.

Many people ask why does Tibor require so many large dogs? His flock graze on agricultural land on the lower slopes of the Carpathian mountains of Transylvania. Bears and wolves are regular visitors from the forest and they test the defences of his dogs, in the hope of gaining an easy meal.

Today was Zorro's first visit to the higher meadows. This is where transhumance shepherds graze their sheep throughout the summer months. It was pretty cold up there at 10am, around -4°C.

Whilst this livestock guardian puppy looks cute hanging on to Laura's shoelace, there is something serious going on here. This is 'boot' camp socialization before the 'real world' work of protecting sheep from predators begins.

There are many wolves and bears in this area of Transylvania and livestock farming without fencing would be virtually impossible without these dogs. This puppy's parents are already out there on the meadows with the the shepherds and flock 24/7 preventing livestock depredations.

For several months this little one will stay within the relative safety of the farm yard, getting to know the livestock e.g. chickens, sheep, pigs, cows and learning all the necessary commands from his human family.

Once all these things are learned and in place he will then rejoin the pack, where his next phase of learning begins. Just like wolves an LGD pack has a hierarchy with an alpha at the top. He will soon find his place within this hierarchy and what is expected of him.

I had a prescription to pick up today from my local pharmacy, not that I went in myself to get it because I'm still nervous about going into enclosed spaces. I took this however in the car whilst we were on stop.

It's hard to imagine that Zorro is only 19 months old. It feels like he's been with us forever.

I enjoy foggy weather and Zorro appeared to appreciate it as well. Everything that's usually familiar looks and sounds so differently and the temperature hung around zero °C for most of the day.

Donkeys are regularly seen with shepherds in Romania. They compliment the deterrence provided by livestock guardian dogs (LGD) from depredations by wolves and bears. What you can't see in this photo are the large number of dogs guarding the flock. So what role does the donkey play?

They are very sensitive to the presence of predators and kick up an enormous and noisy fuss when they approach the flock. They are especially useful at night when it's dark and quiet. That said, they are never used as a substitute to livestock guardian dogs.

Recently I've seen a worrying trend in discussion about replacing LGD's with donkeys because it's believed by some, that they'd be less of a danger to humans walking near to or passing a flock. Yes, a donkey can be incredibly feisty and noisy but they are no match for a top apex predator.

Even LGD's are occasionally killed by wolves if not adequate in numbers and strength, so what chance would donkeys have? Shepherds have honed their skills over generations of experience, so the necessary knowledge on how to effectively protect livestock is already available to anyone wanting to learn more.

She lives and thrives outdoors in this kind of weather. She and her sister lie down right on the snow and ice and take naps.

Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGD) do not drive sheep, they stick with them and protect them from predators such as bears, wolves and lynx. We have all three here.
