The River Tone and the surrounding flat landscape near West Lyng in Somerset.

Look closely at these intricate iron details - built by the Hawks family from 5,050 tons of iron, this pioneering structure was the world's first bridge to combine rail and road traffic. The pedestrian walkways you see here have carried millions of footsteps since the road deck opened in 1850, when pedestrians paid a halfpenny toll and could only cross from 5 am until 6 pm (24-hour access came in June 1871).

Engineering Under Pressure

Between 2005-2008, the bridge underwent essential restoration when severe cracks were found in some of its iron girders. Every rivet, every beam, every plate of this ironwork was examined and restored. The footpaths were closed in March 2006 due to vandalism and the increasing scale of works, but reopened in 2008 after the £43 million restoration.

Built to Last

James Nasmyth's novel steam pile driver was used for the first time in bridge building, delivering 60 to 70 blows a minute compared to the four-minute cycle time of hand-operated drivers. The ironwork you're looking at represents the cutting edge of 1840s engineering - and it's still doing its job beautifully.

The pedestrian walkways on either side of the lower level provide great views of the river and the other bridges - all framed by Robert Stephenson's magnificent iron lattice work.

The Great Lakes water levels are at an all time high this year. This is the East Point lighthouse near the village of Killarney on Georgian Bay taken last month. The winds were whipping up gusts of about 80 km at times. When the water levels are high, the crashing waves can cause real damage on shore. There is another lighthouse on Georgian Bay in Lions Head. Last week the wind took off the one side of the lighthouse and left the inside exposed to the elements. Huge boulders around the lighthouse were displaced. Sadly, there is not much money spent on maintaining the lighthouses anymore.
