Other Railroad Worker Cancer Risks

There are other carcinogens that railroad workers may have been exposed to that may also explain cancers developed by those who work on locomotives, including creosote and other chemical solvents.

There is evidence that creosote may cause skin cancer and cancer of the scrotum. Chemical solvents may cause chronic toxic encephalopathy and other brain diseases.

Railroad companies who were responsible for providing a safe work environment may be in violation of the Federal Employers Liability Act (FELA).

A railroad worker who was diagnosed with cancer may think the cancer was because of his or her family history or another explanation, when it may be because of hazardous chemicals you were exposed to on the job. FELA allows employees who worked in such unsafe environments to seek financial compensation, and such lawsuits do not require out-of-pocket costs on the part of the railroad worker.

Interestingly enough on today's walk we also encountered a group standing on the corner by Westport Road. Maybe 5-6 individuals. One was an older darker skinned female dressed in a Sari. Another was a younger female dressed in a Sari. One was a teen caucasian male. The older female was holding a baby. The baby was alive and appeared healthy. They said baby was 6 months old & had red hair. There was a burly male standing in front of them holding a sign saying they needed "Formula, Food, etc...". They said they were only passing through en-route from TN to TX. I offered them a packet of "human grade" cat food I was taking downtown to some stranded kittens. They refused it. They asked me if I knew how much baby formula cost and I said I did. I asked them if they wanted some chicken nuggets from Burger King and they said they did. The man at Burger King said this group stands on this corner every week. Perhaps the baby was kidnapped or perhaps they were attempting to market health insurance or drugs as they kept mentioning "blue powder". Not sure. Another individual came out from Walmart and loaded up a few cases of Gatorade, etc... The guys from the Worthington Fire Dept. standing across from them said they would go to a couple of Churches to see about baby formula.

Pancake and I ate the nuggets and they left.
