This medieval, Middle Ages, 1066 – 1484, timber framed house was built in the late 14th century. Canons Garth, which has its own chapel, is a Grade II listed building. However, there has been a building here since 1120.
It has 14th century roof timbers, a fortified front door with barred viewing hatch and a host of important additions by Arts and Crafts architect Temple Lushington Moore, who designed a major renovation and extension in 1889.
He created the chapel room and installed medieval floor tiles from Rievaulx Abbey and remodelled the rest of the interior. There is a 16th Century moulded stone fireplace from Helmsley Castle in the 1889 study. The medieval house has a rich history as a building having been first created in 1120 and has been rebuilt and revamped throughout the centuries. It is thought to have started life as a timber structure in about 1120 after being commissioned by one of Helmsley's most famous historical figures Walter l'Espec. Legend has it, that L'Espec founded Kirkham Priory, and Rievaulx Abbey and built Canons Garth after the death of his son in a hunting accident led him to make Christ his heir.
The Garth, created as a home for canons of Kirkham Priory, was later rebuilt in stone and after the Reformation is thought to have been a vicarage before being let and used as a boarding house.
The book “A History of Helmsley Rievaulx and District” reveals it fell into semi dereliction where "rats alone had possession" before being rescued by the Reverend Gray in the 1890s. He commissioned the restoration by Temple Moore and the property was then home to curates and then to nuns. Older Ryedale residents remember Sisters from the Order of the Holy Paraclete in Whitby living there in the 1930s. At one time the nuns operated a makeshift medical centre dispensing herbal remedies, applying poultices and helping deliver babies.
After the second world war the property was empty until it was rescued by Canon Senior in the 1960s, who made it his home and the official vicarage to All Saints parish church adjoining Canons Garth. It has many interesting features that include name plates above the attic bedrooms once used by the nuns. The Sisters named their cells after Christian virtues: Faith, Hope and Charity.
It is now a private dwelling house.

Carla had to run tons of errands on Sunday, so a Juice Generation coco açai smoothie, shot of wheatgrass, pear granola muffins, along with a Chiquita banana helped give her energy. Remind Carla not to leave her Henry Holland Les Specs sunglasses lying around carelessly, though.
