PLEASE

PLEASE note the leg lesions, commonly known as "Scaly leg" or "Tassel foot" are growths on its legs and feet seen in FINCHES a virus (Fringilla coelebs papillomavirus) Whilst birds with severe lesions can become lame, most affected birds continue to behave normally.

GOOD HYGIIENE measures such as cleaning bird feeders are recommended as a routine to minimise transmission of disease at feeding stations.......

There are two main causes of leg lesions in British finches:

• Chaffinch papillomavirus (or Fringilla coelebs papillomavirus 1) is a virus in the Papillomaviridae family which

can cause a skin disease known as papillomatosis.

• Cnemidocoptes spp. are mites which belong to the family Sarcoptidae that can cause a skin disease known as

cnemidocoptosis. In finches, C. jamaicensis is the most common mite species, while C. mutans typically affects

poultry and C. pilae affects psittacine birds (such as pet budgerigars).

There are many colloquial names for leg lesions in finches, including “tassel foot”, “mange” and “scaly foot”.

They are not a frequent cause of death but may compromise the welfare of affected birds: there is no evidence that

they pose a conservation threat. www.gardenwildlifehealth.org

Black Beauty (specimen number RTMP 81.6.1) is a well preserved fossil of Tyrannosaurus rex. The nickname stems from the apparent shiny dark color of the fossil bones, which occurred during fossilisation by the presence of minerals in the surrounding rock. The specimen is housed in the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller, Alberta, Canada. Black Beauty is the 14th of the 20 most complete skeletons of Tyrannosaurus rex found so far, and casts are on display in museums around the world. In 2009, a paper by Jack Horner and colleagues illustrated the concept of parasitic infections in dinosaurs by analysing the lesions found on the cranial bones of Black Beauty. The specimen has been used to study comparative morphology between tyrannosaurids and Tyrannosaurus individuals, and some have suggested that Black Beauty should be classed as Dynamosaurus (=Tyrannosaurus). Black Beauty is considered to be the smallest of all known adult T. rex specimens.

Black Beauty was found in 1980 by Jeff Baker, while on a fishing trip with a friend in the region of the Crowsnest Pass, Alberta. A large bone was found in the riverbank and shown to their teacher. Soon afterward, the Royall Tyrrell Museum was contacted, and excavation of the sandstone matrix surrounding the fossils began in 1982. (wikipedia)

Catatonia

is a syndrome of psychological and motorological disturbances. In the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders published by the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-IV) it is not recognized as a separate disorder, but is associated with psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia (catatonic type), bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and other mental disorders, as well as drug abuse or overdose (or both). It may also be seen in many medical disorders including infections (such as encephalitis), autoimmune disorders, focal neurologic lesions (including strokes), metabolic disturbances and abrupt or overly rapid benzodiazepine withdrawal.

Patients with catatonia may experience an extreme loss of motor skills or even constant hyperactive motor activity. Catatonic patients will sometimes hold rigid poses for hours and will ignore any external stimuli. Patients with catatonic excitement can die of exhaustion if not treated. Patients may also show stereotyped, repetitive movements. They may show specific types of movement such as waxy flexibility, in which they maintain positions after being placed in them by someone else, or gegenhalten (lit. "counterhold"), in which they resist movement in proportion to the force applied by the examiner. They may repeat meaningless phrases or speak only to repeat what the examiner says.

Bad day. Bad bad day.

My friends went to Chicago today to go see the Lion King and eat at the Cheesecake Factory. Where am I at? Sitting on my butt in my room. Why? Because I'm too effing poor to do crap.

Then Garry calls this morning on his way home from work and tells me that he had been asked to go into work tonight. We were supposed to take tonight and tomorrow night and celebrate our anniversary. Is that going to happen now? No. Did he even bother to call me any time in the last seven hours? No.

Haven't eaten anything yet today because the spot doesn't open until 6. Thankfully that's only a half hour away...then I can finally eat something. Will probably be crap because this school could care less about those of us stuck on campus during the weekend...but it's something.

However, I do like this picture. I have high expectations for how it'll do...which sucks cause, with the way my day is going, this thing will be totally ignored by everyone. *sigh* but I still like it...so that's good at least.

Sigo lesionada, siento mucho no poder comentar vuestras fotos, gracias por comentar las mias ;-)))

The lesions on Jimmy's tongue came back and were scraped off in September He received steroids injections at that time - both directly on his tongue and a systemic one. The lesions came right back, seemingly resistant now to steroids. We are trying him on a month-long course of doxycycline, not because he has an infection but because of the anti-inflammatory component of doxy. He seems perfectly healthy and his tongue doesn't seem to bother him so let's hope the doxy helps get rid of the lumps.

Recoveree?

The healed lesions on this rabbit's ear suggest recovery from myxomatosis. However, the face is free of lesions, so I am a little uncertain. Some rabbits do recover from myxo, and when they die out and an immunologically immune generation takes their place you will get another wave of myxo doing what it is supposed to do... keep down the rabbit numbers.

As an illustration of the harm rabbits do to the natural environment in Australia, I watched this fellow through my lens while it munched on a little tree shoot that has emerged since the rain.

No sé qué hacer ahora.

Medical Approach: First Aid

Those having been said, the lesion from a higad attack is basically an inflammatory response of the body to the offending caterpillar hairs. What’s recommended is to do the following:

1. Remove all jewelry/accessories from the area (if arms/legs). Gently wash the affected area with soap and water, then dry without coming into contact with the skin (e.g. use a hair dryer/fan).

2. Apply alcohol or ammonia to cool the area and temporarily relieve symptoms;

3. Apply sticky tape (duct tape, cellophane tape, etc) onto the area to pull off retained hairs. Alternative methods include the use of rubber cement, clear fingernail polish, or facial peeling solutions – all of which should be applied, allowed to dry, then peeled off.

4. If the affected area is an arm or leg, splint, elevate, then apply ice/cold compress to reduce the swelling.

If the victim accidentally inhaled the caterpillar hairs, or has a history of allergies, immediately seek consult at the nearest health facility/with the nearest available physician. In case of caterpillar hairs finding their way into the victim’s eyes, flush the eyes with copious amounts of clean and cool water.

Popular Remedies

Similar to the cure for a bad hangover, caterpillar envenomation seems to be a shared experience that transcends generations – hence the multitude of popular remedies (some effective, others outrageous) “prescribed” by your friendly neighborhood… neighbor. There’s the application of vinegar – that has some scientific basis in that acidic vinegar does dissolve the alkaline caterpillar hairs (but not the parts already in your skin); there’s the application of urine – same principle as vinegar, urine being somewhat acidic; there’s rubbing the area with rock salt followed by virgin coconut oil; and then there’s pouring hot candle wax over the area (kinky!) then stripping it off once cool – to pull out the hairs.

Cuban Healthcare - A Diabetes study is underway

Number of diabetics in Cuba could double by 2010 • In the Habana municipality of Jaruco an active investigation within the population is underway, looking to the prevention and treatment of diabetes, an effort that is later to be extended to the rest of the country

CURRENTLY there are 375,095 registered cases of diabetes in Cuba, a figure that could reach 624,000 by 2010, affirmed Dr. Oscar Díaz, director of the National Institute of Endocrinology, a special center devoted to treatment of this condition that causes the death of three million people a year worldwide.

Diabetes is a disease that is on the rise. According to facts broadcast on the Cuban “Roundtable” TV program addressing the issue, 246 million people in the world are currently living with the affliction, a figure that is expected to reach 380 million by 2025.

The disease can lead to a diabetic coma, that can be fatal, and other chronic complications which can manifest themselves in the long term as heart trouble or cardiac arrest, thrombosis or brain hemorrhage, kidney disease, vision loss and others like sores on the feet that, left untreated, can lead to amputation.

In Cuba, where more than 3% of the population has diabetes, it is the eighth most frequent cause of death. As Dr. Díaz explained to the weekly Trabajadores, of the total diagnosed, only around 1,000 are children.

Cuba has Diabetic Treatment Centers in all provinces except Sancti Spíritus and the special municipality of the Isle of Youth, where patients are taught to understand and control their disease in order to live independent and useful lives.

Adults as well as children learn exercises that they should do, the type of nutrition that is best for them, the use of specific medications, checking glucose in the blood and urine to prevent complications which, if they should arise, can be given specialized treatment within the national health system.

For example, angiology services are provided which serve to prevent amputations required as a result of diabetic foot ulcers. Also to be highlighted is the unique product developed by Cuban biotechnologists, Citoprop-p, which has been used successfully to cure these lesions.

Currently, public health officials are actively working on research and inquiries into diabetes within the community.

As was reported on the “Roundtable,” the Habana municipality of Jaruco, an agricultural community of 25,574 residents, was selected as the locale for this pilot program that will later be implemented across the country.

Dr. Vladimir González, Jaruco’s municipal public health director, explained that the study involves more than 20,000 individuals over the age of 15 and includes questionnaires and analyses carried out in the family doctor offices.

This effort will allow for even more information on the incidence of diabetes within the Cuban population and at the same time support its control through prevention (the most important according to expert opinion), early detection, education of the afflicted and their families and the implementation of measures to prevent complications.

It is recognized that in order to prevent diabetes, it is necessary to understand the risk factors and to administer glucose tolerance tests.

Some of these risk factors (age and genetics) cannot be changed, but others related to patterns of behavior (obesity and sedentary life style) can be addressed.

Cuba, Castro, Che Guevara was jailer and executioner-in-chief of Castro's dictatorship

Cuba: A Photograph as Metaphor

By Online Saturday, January 24, 2009

Fausta Wertz, faustasblog.com

Cuba celebrated fifty years of its Communist Revolution the other day. It was a subdued celebration, as befits a celebration where the locals were not invited, and where the anniversary is marked by grief.

I was doing a roundup of posts for my blog’s Monday Carnival of Latin America and the Caribbean when I came across this image:

The rusted wrought-iron balconies and fading handcrafted doors look back to an older era of artisanship and pride of ownership, now gone. Paint colors from decades ago, stucco coming apart from the wall, graffiti and mold, signal decay and pain.

Hope has bypassed that wall.

The photograph is in an article about Steven Soderbergh’s latest movie, Che, but it is emblematic of today’s Cuba: the only recent paint that building has seen is the iconic figure of Che (most prominently the Korda photo), whose myth and fiction override the reality of the hundreds of people he killed:

But a glance beneath the surface glamour of Alberto Korda’s 1960 beret-and-curls photograph of Guevara is enough to expose the less-than-romantic reality. At the time he posed for Korda’s camera, Guevara was jailer and executioner-in-chief of Castro’s dictatorship. As boss of the notorious La Cabaña prison in Havana, he supervised the detention, interrogation, summary trials and executions of hundreds of “class enemies”.

We know from Ernest Hemingway – then a Cuban resident – what Che was up to. Hemingway, who had looked kindly on leftist revolutions since the Spanish civil war, invited his friend George Plimpton, editor of the Paris Review, to witness the shooting of prisoners condemned by the tribunals under Guevara’s control. They watched as the men were trucked in, unloaded, shot, and taken away. As a result, Plimpton later refused to publish Guevara’s memoir, The Motorcycle Diaries.

There have been some 16,000 such executions since the Castro brothers, Guevara and their merry men swept into Havana in January 1959. About 100,000 Cubans who have fallen foul of the regime have been jailed. Two million others have succeeded in escaping Castro’s socialist paradise, while an estimated 30,000 have died in the attempt.

The building it’s painted on, like hundreds of other buildings in Cuba, won’t be restored, or for that matter, brought back to minimum standards because it’s not a tourist destination or owned by a Communist Party big-shot. Since in Cuba only the state has the right to sell property, and the average wage is $20 a month, the only way that building got new paint was a picture of Che. Like the Revolución, even that image is showing cracks.

The woman in front of the building looks at the contents of a small shopping bag, where she may be carrying the meager rations that Fidel Castro introduced in the country in 1962, rations that compare to that which Cuban slaves received in the 1840s.

A month’s rations would fit in that bag.

Of course there’s a propaganda aspect, and the Cuban government places the blame for nearly everything on the USA and the embargo, el bloqueo, even when the US is Cuba’s #5 trading partner according to the Cuban government’s own figures:

Trade data for 2007 posted on the website of Cuba’s National Statistics Office placed the U.S. fifth at $582 million, compared with $484 million in 2006, including shipping costs.

By the way, food and medicine were never subject to the embargo.

As they say, if you can't be a shining example, you'll have to be a terrible warning...

It started about 3-4 years ago, when I first noticed a roughly square pink blotch on the side of my head, between my right eye and ear. This is where the plastic buckle of my swimming goggles rubs, so I didn't think anything of it at the time.

By the beginning of 2022, the skin of the blotch was becoming a darker shade of pink and starting to flake; A small lump that felt like a blister had also formed just at my hairline.

By the autumn of 2022, the lump had grown to a crusty-looking lesion that would bleed easily and then scab over, without ever fully healing. A surgeon noticed this and asked me how long I'd had the lesion. When I told him, his immediate response was that it could be cancerous, and that I should get it looked at without delay. Sure enough, it turns out to be a squamous cell carcinoma, which I am hopefully going to have removed in the next few weeks.

The moral is that if you ever see anyone with a crusty skin lesion like this that repeatedly bleeds, scabs over and never seems to heal, please suggest that they get it looked at!

SNAKE FUNGAL DISEASE

Snake fungal disease (SFD), caused by the fungus Ophidiomyces ophiodiicola, is an emerging pathogen of snakes identified in more than 15 genera of captive and free-ranging snakes in 21 states.Snake Fungal Disease, Photo by Matt Allender

SFD is not considered a risk to people.

Some infected snakes show no symptoms. Others develop facial swelling and disfigurement, skin and scale lesions and internal lesions. For some snakes, the disease is fatal.

The fungus can persist in the soil. The route of transmission is unknown, but may occur through contact with soil, other infected snakes, or from mother to offspring.

SFD in Indiana

Researchers from the University of Illinois first identified SFD in Indiana in late 2017 during a surveillance project for the disease.

The researchers swabbed the skin of 53 snakes from 10 Indiana counties. Of those, 13 tested positive for the fungus. Two of those 13 snakes had visible lesions. Species that tested positive included the northern water snake (Nerodia sipedon), racer (Coluber constrictor), milk snake (Lampropeltis triangulum) and queen snake (Regina septemvittata).

The surveillance project was funded by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources State Wildlife Grant T7R22.

Field work will resume in spring 2018.

Why monitoring SFD is important

Snakes are important predators and play a critical role in maintaining a balanced ecosystem. Having healthy snake populations in Indiana is necessary to keep rodent populations in check.

Documenting the distribution of this disease will help us develop conservation and management plans.

Snake fungal disease may cause high mortality rates in eastern massasauga rattlesnakes (Sistrurus catenatus), a federally threatened and state-endangered species in parts of northern Indiana. The potential long-term effect on populations of massasaugas and other snakes remains uncertain.

There are two areas of inflammation, one each on the inside portion of the cheek that is adjacent to the outside surface of the carnasal teeth, a.k.a fourth upper premolars. See the other side. The dental tartar that accumulates on the outside surface of these teeth irritates the tissue that it touches on the inside of the mouth. Regular professional cleanings, as well as home dental care help to prevent these lesions.
