Kiska - watching the world go by from her tree top platform

We followed this leopard on his walk through a dried up river bed, up the river bank and up into this tree. The picture was taken while on safari in south africa in ngala game reserve

Lucky snap of a snow leopard at the Melbourne Zoo. The first time I walked past it was laying down in the back corner of the enclosure.

Before leaving I thought I'd walk past again just in case it was more active and sure enough it was actually quite playful, jumping up on a tree as seen here.

The Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis), also known as the Manchurian leopard. It is critically endangered, with maybe less than 30 individuals left in the wild.

Taken in a South African game park. I grabbed the shot as the cat turned round as it slinked off into the grass.

The Big Five. Leopards (Leopardos). Kruger Park. South Africa. Oct/2018

The leopard (Panthera pardus) is one of the five species in the genus Panthera, a member of the Felidae. The leopard occurs in a wide range in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia. Leopards are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List because leopard populations are threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, and are declining in large parts of the global range. Contemporary records suggest that the leopard occurs in only 25% of its historical global range. Leopards are hunted illegally, and their body parts are smuggled in the wildlife trade for medicinal practices and decoration.

Compared to other wild cats, the leopard has relatively short legs and a long body with a large skull. It is similar in appearance to the jaguar, but generally has a smaller, lighter physique. Its fur is marked with rosettes similar to those of the jaguar, but the leopard's rosettes are generally smaller, more densely packed and without central spots. Both leopards and jaguars that are melanistic are known as black panthers. The leopard is distinguished by its well-camouflaged fur, opportunistic hunting behaviour, broad diet, and strength (which it uses to move heavy carcasses into trees), as well as its ability to adapt to various habitats ranging from rainforest to steppe, including arid and montane areas, and its ability to run at speeds of up to 58 kilometres per hour (36 mph)

Kruger National Park is one of the largest game reserves in Africa. It covers an area of around 20,000 square kilometres in the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga in northeastern South Africa, and extends 360 kilometres (220 mi) from north to south and 65 kilometres (40 mi) from east to west.

Leopard in tree

www.twycrosszoo.org/home.aspx

I finally got to see the snow leopards at Twycross Zoo, an animal I've wanted to see my whole life, more than any other. A terrible shame about the wire I know but making eye contact with possibly the most awesome animal on earth was quite emotional, to say the least ! Actually I'm beggining to prefer zoo pictures that actually look like they were taken in a zoo. The same with ' my ' foxes and badgers, trying to show them in the urban environment they actually live in.

I'll never forget as long as I live seeing the footage of snow leopards on the BBC's Planet Earth series for the first time, especially the incredible chase sequence, here it is on youtube ( the music is so beautiful too )......

Makes me a bit watery eyed but then most wildlife documentaries do these days, just about every animal they film comes with horror stories of our persecution.

AND another thing....why do we see more of the presenters than the animals these days ?!?!? Less people, more animals PLEASE !!!

"Xizi" (Amur Leopard) - Big Cats 2 (WHF, Kent)

I was lucky to secure an interview with Kiran Moktan, head keeper at the Darjeeling Snow Leopard Breeding Centre. He is an amazing man. And this is Karish, the snow leopard cub who was his pride and joy. Fortunately, I did get this interview published in one of the first issues of Asian Geographic. © Andy Withers
