Nasi lemak is a dish that is commonly sold in Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore and Southern Thailand. In fact, it has been called the national dish of Malaysia (though such claim is unheard of outside of Kuala Lumpur). In the East Coast of Malaysia, Terengganu and Kelantan, their version is called Nasi Dagang although this claim is never acknowledged by anyone as both dishes can usually be found sold side by side for breakfast. There is a similar dish in Indonesia called nasi uduk.
With roots in Malay culture, its name is a Malay word that literally means 'rice in cream'. The name is derived from the cooking process whereby rice is soaked in rich coconut cream and then the mixture steamed. Sometimes knotted screwpine (pandan) leaves are thrown into the rice while steaming to give it more fragrance. Spices such as ginger (common in Malay cuisine) and occasionally herbs like lemon grass may be added for additional fragrance.

So happy! Cooking nasi lemak using basmati rice was such a breeze! In my previous experiences, the rice almost always turned out a little soggy using fragrance rice! For this reason, I have not been cooking nasi lemak for a long time. Nasi lemak in Malay is coconut rice.
Today, we had our nasi lemak with fried pomfret, chicken fillets, sliced cucumber and sambal ikan billis.
:) Due to some delay, this lunch was served around 3 PM. Luckily, we had a good breakfast at the foodcourt.
This was where I stayed for 3 days and 2 night. (during sunathon)

Nasi lemak is a fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk commonly found in Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Riau Islands and Southern Thailand. Malaysia proclaims it its national dish and a national heritage of Malaysia, although it's widely served in other parts of the region.
With roots in Malay culture and Malay cuisine, its name in Malay literally means "fatty rice", but is taken in this context to mean "rich" or "creamy". The name is derived from the cooking process whereby rice is soaked in coconut cream and then the mixture steamed.
Sometimes knotted screwpine (pandan) leaves are thrown into the rice while steaming to give it more fragrance. Spices such as ginger and occasionally herbs like lemon grass may be added for additional fragrance.
Traditionally, this comes as a platter of food wrapped in banana leaves, with cucumber slices, small fried anchovies (ikan bilis), roasted peanuts, hard boiled egg, and hot spicy sauce (sambal) at its core. As a more substantial meal, nasi lemak can also come with a variety of other accompaniments such as ayam goreng (fried chicken), sambal sotong (cuttlefish in chilli), cockles, stir fried water convolvulus (kangkong), pickled vegetables (acar), beef rendang (beef stewed in coconut milk and spices) or paru (beef lungs). Traditionally most of these accompaniments are spicy in nature.
