They started life pretty much like any other human legs - sprouting from a bean-shaped thing in some strange slimy broth. But once they were exposed to air, they needed independence.
"We are sorry," they told the infant girl to whom they'd come attached. "We cannot be tied down. We cannot live your straight suburban life. We must strike out on our own and explore the world and have adventures."
So the little legs toddled off into the woods and beheld many things. They did not need a body or a brain. They took sustenance directly from the earth and air, and stood side by side with trees for hours and sometimes days on end, growing.
When they had achieved their full height, the legs set off for the city, where they explored many things, and had adventures. Once, they even swung from a trapeze at a circus. Even though the sight of them, all on their own, made people queasy and the circus had to promise to never show the independent legs again.
That was fine with the legs. They had things to do. They lived long. They had their day. Their time came and went.
Now they sit alone in a dusty room, propped on a cardboard box, looking out a window. They don't go out any more. They just sit. And that's okay. These days, the simple warmth of sun along their length is all they need.

Found this male Hooded Merganser busy diving for breakfast and was astonished by the size of the Frog-leg meal he found. Bottoms up… so to speak : )
Adult males are a sight to behold, with sharp black-and-white patterns set off by chestnut flanks. Females get their own distinctive elegance from their cinnamon crest.
Hooded Mergansers are fairly common on small ponds and rivers, where they dive for fish, crayfish, and other food, seizing it in their thin, serrated bills. They find their prey underwater by sight. They can actually change the refractive properties of their eyes to improve their underwater vision. In addition, they have an extra eyelid, called a “nictitating membrane,” which is transparent and helps protect the eye during swimming, like a pair of goggles.
Hooded Merganser ducklings leave their nest cavity within 24 hours of hatching. First, their mother checks the area around the nest and calls to the nestlings from ground level. From inside the nest, the little fluffballs scramble up to the entrance hole and then flutter to the ground, which may be 50 feet or more below them. In some cases, they have to walk half a mile or more with their mother to the nearest body of water.
The oldest recorded Hooded Merganser was a male and at least 14 years, 6 months old when he was shot in Mississippi in 2009. He had been banded in Minnesota in 1995.

Een trein die zich maar weinig laat fotograferen is de lege cementtrein van RheinCargo uit Neuwied naar Deuna. Planmatig vertrekt de trein rond 20:00 uit Neuwied om vervolgens via Köln, het Ruhrgebiet en Altenbeken in Deuna te geraken. Doordat de trein zo laat vertrekt uit Neuwied is ze enkel in de late zomerse zonuurtjes te zien op de Rheinstrecke zoals in Hammerstein.
Ook op vrijdagavond 23 juli zou de trein moeten vertrekken vanuit Neuwied en zouden we deze in Hammerstein kunnen vereeuwigen. Tot ongeveer 20:30 was er direct zonlicht aanwezig dus het zou toch nog een redelijke uitdaging worden, want mocht de trein iets later vertrekken was een foto maken al bijna geen optie meer. Na al een bijzonder goed geslaagde avond was het dus nog afwachten of RheinCargo zou passeren en natuurlijk met welke loc dat zou gebeuren. Over het algemeen heeft RheinCargo interessante locomotieven, maar de rode 185'ers mogen ze van mij achterwege houden voor zo'n cementtrein.
Gelukkig zat het allemaal mee deze avond en zodoende kon om 20:24 te Hammerstein in het laatste zonlicht de RheinCargo 187 071 vastgelegd worden met de lege cementtrein die nog geen vijf minuten geleden is vertrokken vanaf Neuwied. We dachten hierna dat het klaar was voor deze dag, maar niet veel later wist DB Cargo ons nog te verrassen met een niet alledaagse 189'er op de Rheinstrecke waarvan de foto later volgt!

Tegelijkertijd met kalktrein was er een lege bietenpulptrein onderweg van Oss naar Venlo. Nadat de kalktrein ons was gepasseerd werd in Venlo gekeken. Daar stond de bietenpulp al gereed met een Duitse loc, dus werd snel naar Breyell, waar het zonnetje gelukkig ook nog uitbundig scheen.
DB Cargo 152 029 met mooie sleep Rail Cargo Austria Tdrrs uit Oss via Venlo naar een Zuidoost-Europese bestemming, komt langs Breyell.
Begin september 2023 werd er na een mislukte poging eerder in augustus een tweede poging gewaagd om de kalksteentreinen op de foto te zetten tussen Warstein en Beckum/Ennigerloh Süd.
Het eerste bezoek aan deze lijn in augustus leverde weinig successen op. De normaalgesproken meerderen keren per dag rijdende kalksteentreinen tussen Warstein en Beckum/Ennigerloh Süd vielen uit, waardoor alleen de meermaals per week rijdende biertrein overbleef.
Momenteel is het erg rustig op de lijn van de WLE. Dit komt omdat er weinig tot geen vraag is naar kalksteen. Ondanks de geringe vraag reed er op 6 september toch 1 slag tussen Warstein en Ennigerloh Süd.
Na aankomst bij Heidelberg Cement in Ennigerloh Süd gaat men de trein lossen. Na lossing wordt omgelopen om vervolgens leeg richting Warstein terug te keren.
Te zien is de WLE 21 met een lege kalksteentrein afkomstig van de fabriek in Ennigerloh Süd De trein passeert hier om 11:37 de fotograaf net buiten Diestedde onderweg naar Lippstadt en uiteindelijk Warstein.

Op 30 en 31 augustus werd de omgeving van Seelze wat verkend. Na, op 30 augustus, een tijdje langs het baanvak Seelze-Wunstorf te hebben gestaan kwam de 132 068-8 van de Leipziger Eisenbahnverkehrsgesellschaft in beeld met de Laugenzug naar K+S Minerals. Besloten werd die te volgen.
Vanwege de typische inefficiënte Duitse verkeerslichten duurde de rit door Wunstorf een stuk langer dan verwacht. Als - voor de trein - alles meezit duurt een ritje Seelze-Bokeloh ruim 20 min, minder dan de auto. Navraag bij een toevallig aanwezige chauffeur die te wachten stond leerde echter dat de trein nog niet was gepasseerd. Lang zou dat niet duren aangezien in de verte de tyfoon al te horen was. Kort daarna begon het overwegsein te knipperen en kwam de trein in beeld.
De LEG 132 068-8 passeert hier de landoverweg met gepaste snelheid in een fraai licht. De dag erna werd de trein wederom gespot nabij Seelze en kon deze vanuit een ander standpunt in wat zonnigere omstandigheden worden gefotografeerd: www.flickr.com/photos/129583930@N04/52327580064/in/datepo...

Discovered this stunning little cucumber green spider, Araniella cucurbitina, clinging to the spathe of my calla lily. The spider has a brilliant lime green abdomen and I believe this specimen was a male. The droplet was not placed, but is actually due to the natural process of guttation where drops of xylem sap are exuded from the tips of some vascular plants as a result of root pressure.
