Mid morning in Pescadero along the San Mateo County coastline. The fog has receded to the ocean, leaving a lazy midsummer morning in its wake.
Happy Fence Friday everyone.

There was an abundance of Pelicans at Ano Nuevo Preserve on this foggy summer morning. The Pelican is one of my favorite birds. To me there is not a more breathtaking sight than watching them skim over the tops of the water, dipping their wings precariously close to the breaking waves, yet never touching them. I am always amazed at the precision that exists in the natural world.

The morning marine layer slowly lifts, revealing a scene abundant in bird and marine life as the Pigeon Point Lighthouse quietly surveys the action. It's been years since this old lighthouse has leant it's beams to guide the sailors home. But it's none-the-less for it's inactivity.

Of all the paths I follow, my favorite ones are the pathways to infinity. Give me a view, wind me up, and set me on the path. The rest takes care of itself.

The fog recedes as the new day awakens, revealing another morning of pristine beauty at Pigeon Point along the California coastline.

Built for durability versus beauty, the old fog alert station beneath the Golden Gate Bridge has stood stoically guarding the entrance to the San Francisco Bay since the 19th century. Still, there is a certain Sheng Fui about it me thinks--as the old stone building has gradually become one with its surrounding environment.

A plethora of boats for a multitude of purposes, hanging out in Monterey Bay.

I was out early on this morning but the construction workers had already beat me to the punch. Here the laborers are preparing to work against the backdrop of the ever changing San Francisco skyline. I guess everybody but me was working on this morn--just the way I like it.

If you stand at the lighthouse at Pigeon Point and look south, this is the view that greets you. In the distance, there is nothing but ocean and the beautiful rolling countryside along the San Mateo County coastline.

On the water, where the ocean meets the shore. A foggy summer morning, about to be consumed by the sun. The horizon is invisible, obscured by a dazzling combination of sun and marine layer. A waitress goes about readying her restaurant for the lunch crowd. At first I wonder if she is desensitized to this scene, because of her daily exposure to it. And then it hits me. No, she is part of it.

Summertime, and the livin' is easy. Or so they say. If it ain't easy, at least it's colorful. The Venetians, a popular row of vacation rentals in Capitola, guarantees it.

Guess the number of windows in the image and win a life-time supply of Windex. The only rub is, you have to spend your life-time cleaning the windows. There are worse ways to make a living me thinks.
Happy Window Wednesday everyone.

The evening rush hour kicking into gear along Grant Street in the SF Financial District. If you want to feel the rhythm and pulse of a big city, this is the time to be there.

Boundaries can be grave matters, especially when they keep people apart. In this case, the boundary between the physical objects and the sky was quite appealing to my cryptic eye.

Cool and gray. The perfect weather for a steaming bowl of clam chowder, and a crusty loaf of sourdough bread. Throw in a malty dopplebock and I could sit wharf side for a millennium. Welcome to my view.

---unfortunately this is the only section of Broadway on which I stand a chance. It ain't much but it's something anyway.

I'm definitely including this scene in my someday to be published moodily romantic psychedelic thriller surfer novel. I'm thinking this is where the high drama ending comes down. Surfers and pier pilings just aren't good bedfellows. I just have to start writing it.

Cattle graze in a lush field just south of Half Moon Bay, along the San Mateo County coastline. This area along the coast is home to cattle ranchers, and farmers. Local farming specializes in floriculture, particularly cut flowers. If you love rugged beaches, stunning vistas, and flowers this is the place for you. It also helps to have a fondness for fog.

If you're looking for a career as a window washer, this would be the land of opportunity. As for me, I'm more interested in rooftop bars, and taco joints.

It looks like you could step right into that mural and catch a wave. When you're done, don't forget to stop by Cunha's Country Grocery store for a snack and a drink.

I've been having fun with buildings lately--nice clean fun during this time of lockdown. The archives are surprisingly full of shots showing various styles of urban architecture. Here, the lights in the city sure looked pretty to me.

Spring has made an appearance along the California Coast. Here, an old barn continues it's daily task of making sure the sun sets in the West. I don't know what it has to do with the process, but it sounds like a good job for an old barn. I wish it were my job.

Cruising the San Francisco waterfront, basking in the early morning ambience. Nothing much going on. If you don't count the boats at rest under a lovely soft blanket of morning marine layer. That was good enough for me.

I was going about my business on this bright city morning. So was everybody else. After a while, I decided to walk on the sunny side of the street. It made little difference where my business was concerned, but it did brighten my mood.

If you look at the trash littering this alley and think it's just another one of those hangouts for winos and dealers, you would be totally wrong. Behind those weathered and beaten doorways most likely resides a software company and a horde of techie workers.
This part of the City has been re-gentrifying for quite some time. Companies flush with the big bucks redo the interiors of the buildings while leaving the exteriors the way they've looked for years. The entire process raises prices and displaces people. A sad state affairs for the locals. I even feel sorry for the winos.
San Francisco CA
I particularly love the alleyways in Chinatown. They tend to be quieter, as well as more traditional than the main thoroughfares that are littered with gift and trinket shops, whose main objective, is to attract the tourists. This section of Chinatown is comprised of businesses that cater to the locals. The out-of-owners tend not to stray here. To me, this is the heart of Chinatown.

There are scenes I come back to time and time again. They are like old friends and as I get to know them better, my relationship with them continues to refine. This is one of those scenes--a lazy morning at Pillar Point Harbor with the boats resting quietly in the water, and abandoned Mario's Pier glistening in the morning light.

Few things are are more disappointing than waiting for that date who never shows up. There's nothing worse than dashed expectations.
Speaking of waiting, I've developed virus-like symptoms. I went down and got swabbed. Sadly, I have to wait a week to know the results. In the meantime, I've been relegated to the back of the house--waiting.

I needed to know the time so I gazed from the old fashioned world of Chinatown, down through the Lego-like buildings in the Financial District, to the clock above the Ferry Building. It was 5:00. Time for dinner--glad I was in Chinatown.

I can guarantee you'll never see this image at the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. No glossy parks or well tended buildings here--only the grime and grit, courtesy of decades of everyday use and abuse.

Our lives contain many different backdrops at many different times. Here's one of my favorites--Jerry Garcia keeping eternal watch over the Haight-Ashbury district--even when folks are oblivious to him.

I like to visit Chinatown in the early morning hours, before the tourists arrive. At this hour, Chinatown reverts to its historical roots. I think of it as a Chinatown Mood.

Saturday morning in the Haight-Ashbury district. Nothing to do but wait. Eventually something will happen. I'm not predicting another "Summer of Love" like the one in 1967. But then again, I didn't predict that one either.

Standing on Ocean Beach on a foggy morning looking at the Cliff House. The Cliff House might be San Francisco's most famous establishment. It dates to 1858 and has seen it's share of catastrophe including complete decimation by fire in 1907. The iconic restaurant has also been featured in numerous novels, movies, and even on the cover of a Blue Oyster Cult album.
Interestingly, I've never eaten there once in my 68 years on earth and I'm a native San Franciscan. I always felt it was a spot for the tourists. Yet, I've always loved the location and the ambience.

Do you feel like the world is tilting out of control? Does your sense of reality seem to be shifting under your feet? Do the lines bend where they used to be straight? Welcome to the new world of Disordered Deformation, where nothing is as it seems--3D glasses not required.

Looking straight down Haight Street on an early Saturday morning. All is quiet. Not like the tumult of the '60s, where the scene was wall-to-wall tie-dye, embellished by peace symbols, and perfumed with the smell of pot.
I lived two blocks from this scene during the '50s. I was a youngster than, but this place evokes memories like no other place can.
San Francisco CA
A long shot down Clay Street, Chinatown at the forefront of the frame, the tall buildings of the Financial District in the middle, and the Embarcadero at the end. If you look real closely you can just make out the clock on the Ferry Building at the end of the street--yesterdays shot about 14 hours earlier.
I love the colorful murals along the building walls here. As if Chinatown already wasn't colorful enough.
San Francisco CA
Miles and miles of empty beach stretch northward from San Gregorio along the San Mateo County Coastline. I've always loved this special spot along the coast. It contains many fond memories from my younger years. I look at this picture and feel immediate relief from all the calamity that surrounds us these days. I think we all need places like this--natural places that rejuvenate our souls.
I'll be off line for a while as I'm having surgery on my right shoulder this Friday. Peace to all.

My big obstacle with work in Corporate America is finding the right blend between mind and heart. It seems perhaps, that you can never have too much heart--or too much beach for that matter. One follows the other.

One of the famous intersections in San Francisco and a great place to do a little people watching. Not coincidentally, I found some people to watch, and a few buildings as well.

Do you need exercise and can't afford a gym membership? Don't have room in your house for a cumbersome piece of equipment? Don't worry, just hustle your bod down to the stretch of Kearny Street right off of Broadway. There you will find a stair master like no other. Just what you need for those chunky thighs and calves.

The wee hours in the city--the time when the ghosts of night mingle with the insomniacs. A lonely man can fall a long ways during a cold city night. For some the fall is only as high as the curb.

I caught Old St. Nick crossing the street in Chinatown. I heard through the grapevine that he vacations in San Francisco. Now I have proof.

The rainy season has come early for us this year. That doesn't stop me from dreaming about lazy summer days.

The Age of Sail (usually dated as 1571–1862) was a period in which international trade and naval warfare were dominated by sailing ships. This is a historical fact. An alternative fact is, that it is possible to achieve elevated sensations of peace and tranquility by sailing through the golden light of an early morning with nothing but the wind at your back.
Ah, the infamous alternative fact--where one thing doesn't have to equal another or even make sense for that matter.

Whenever I spend the night at Point Reyes National Seashore, I make a point of rising at day break for an early morning trek at Pierce Ranch.
The early morning air here is salty, moist, and fresh. The old abandoned ranch is eerily alive, with the wind whistling through the cracks in the steeples, while the old clapboard structures groan and creak like they've seen one too many winters. At this time of the morning I usually have the place to myself which adds to the affect. I like it this way.
Check it out if you have a chance.

“What is the meaning of life? That was all- a simple question; one that tended to close in on one with years, the great revelation had never come. The great revelation perhaps never did come. Instead, there were little daily miracles, illuminations, matches struck unexpectedly in the dark; here was one.”
― Virginia Woolf, To the Lighthouse
Yes, here was one. Virginia puts it much better than I ever could.
