Visage adolescent, dents éclatantes (!) et tenues de minet, Frank Alamo symbolisa l’insouciance et l’appétit de vivre des années 1960. Ces années yé-yé qui virent l’éclosion d’un style musical nourri essentiellement de tubes américains traduits en français. Pas de blouson de cuir mais une tendance chic et sportive. L’antithèse du rock des mauvais garçons illustré par Vince Taylor.
Son premier succès, sorti en 1963, fut une reprise de Da Dou Ron Ron chanté par les Crickets. Son producteur, Eddie Barclay vit en lui un rival de Claude François, poulain de l’écurie Philips et de l’impresario Paul Lederman.
Fils d’un grand fabricant de téléviseurs, Jean-François Grandin tomba ainsi dans la variété par hasard. Il tira son pseudonyme, Frank Alamo, du célèbre western de John Wayne, Fort Alamo.
Lorsqu’il chanta, en 1963, Biche, ma biche, Frank Alamo grimpa en tête du hit-parade, dont il devint un familier, avec d’autres tubes comme Maillot 38-37 et Le Chef de la bande.
La belle aventure durera quelques années, jusqu’au grand chamboulement de 1968, qui mit fin à la carrière de Frank Alamo. Après avoir perdu ses fans en même temps que ses illusions, il devint tour à tour photographe, homme d’affaires, vendeur de voitures, avant de tenter plusieurs come-backs infructueux. Ce n’est qu’en 2006 qu’il renoua avec le succès, grâce à la tournée Âge tendre et têtes de bois.
Sa tombe, en bordure de 25ème division, se trouve sensiblement en face de celle de Bécaud.
