As part of our 2018 Dreams to Success Day, Scholarship America hosted our first Partner Summit at the National Press Club. Former Secretary of Education John B. King Jr., keynote speaker Sara Goldrick-Rab, former Under Secretary of Education Dr. Martha Kanter and Inside Higher Ed editor Doug Lederman held a panel on the state of higher education and current challenges.
My father's elder brother, Leonard Zeligman (later Selwyn) married Joan (nee Lederman) and they lived for quite a while in Kent (Orpington?) before emigrating to Canada.

MUSIC ON SCREEN : la production exécutive de musique de films en Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles.
Avec Renaud Mayeur, Jean-Marc Lederman, Stefan Liberski, Gabriel Alloing, Jean-Yves Roubin et Benjamin Schoos.
Le 21 juin 2017, dans le cadre du "Music District Tour" au centre d'entreprises Pepibru à Bruxelles, Freaksville Publishing présentait la masterclass MUSIC ON SCREEN autour de la production exécutive de musique de films en Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles.
L’importance de la musique à l’image n’est plus à démontrer mais de nombreux enjeux artistiques et économiques en bousculent régulièrement la conception.
Quels sont les challenges ? Comment optimiser la production d’un enregistrement ? Quels sont les budgets et les bourses accordées aux musiques originales ? Comment synchroniser de la musique existante dans des délais rapides ?
Autant de questions auxquelles Renaud Mayeur et Jean-Marc Lederman – compositeurs, Stefan Liberski – auteur et réalisateur, Jean-Yves Roubin – co-président de l’Union des Producteurs Francophones de Films et fondateur de Frakas Productions, et Gabriel Alloing – Music Supervisor chez The Right Music, ont tenté d’esquisser des réponses. Cette rencontre était animée par Benjamin Schoos, producteur, compositeur et Music Supervisor chez Freaksville Records.
Entre ces personnalités, un moment de discussion plutôt rare et instructif sur les différents aspects souvent méconnus de la conception de musiques à l'écran, qu'elle soit originales, adaptées, inspirées d'autres oeuvres (connues mais impayables), voire préfabriquées et disponibles dans de gigantesques catalogues en ligne de "musiques au mètre"…
Il sera question de création, de production, d'administration et de commerce de la musique (à noter : le terme "clearance" - l'obtention des droits d'utilisation de la musique - reviendra à plusieurs reprises lors de la discussion).
Une thématique cruciale qui intéressera à la fois les créateurs et les nombreux métiers impliqués dans le secteur de la musique et du cinéma... Et bien sûr les fans ;)

Claude François est né le 1 février 1939 à Ismaïlia (Egypte). Il est décédé accidentellement le 11 mars 1978 à Paris à l'âge de 39 ans.
Tout petit, il vit dans une maison bourgeoise d’Ismaïlia jusqu’à ce que les allemands bombardent la ville et détruise la belle villa de ses parents. C’est sa grand-mère du côté de son père qui décide alors de s’en occuper. En 1956, la famille arrive temporairement à Paris avant d’aller à Monaco, puis à Nice. Il prend des cours à l’Académie nationale de musique ainsi que des cours particuliers spécialement dédiés à l’amélioration de son chant.
En 1961, durant l’été, il décide donc de monter sur Paris sur les conseils de Brigitte Bardot et Sacha Distel qu’il a eu la chance de rencontrer. En 1962, Claude François enregistre son premier disque "Le Nabout twist" qui cartonnera en Afrique mais malheureusement pas en France.
C’est grâce à Paul Lederman que la notoriété de Claude François ne va cesser de croître, un impresario doué qui lancera également Michel Polnareff, Mike Brant, Thierry Le Luron, Coluche ou Les Inconnus. En octobre 1963, il sort le disque "Si j’avais un marteau" qui plafonnera en top des ventes pendant plusieurs jours.
En septembre 1964, c’est tout en haut de l’affiche de l’Olympia que Claude François présente son spectacle avec des titres comme "J’y pense et puis j’oublie". Il arrive à battre les records de chiffre d’affaire généré à l’Olympia détenus précédemment par Edith Piaf.
