Update:

Hubs are being serviced with new grease, new 25c tires on the way and I just got a matching handlebar bag. I'd like to clamp a headlight to the front fork blade as well, for more early morning / night time rides. It's the best time to ride during the summer in Florida

The Rivet saddle puts up with rain pretty well. This is after 24 miles in a steady misty rain.

The Polyvalent is your do anything 650b low trail bike. It's designed to take front loads without any effect on handling or quality.

Realizing that I have no photo of my bike at all, anywhere, I decided to go all out and get a proper shot. I cleared a wall in my office/studio and dragged the subject upstairs. I hadn't yet broken-in my new convertible umbrella, so I set up to light with 2 strobes, L & R.

So here it is: a 1973 vintage Dawes Galaxy. I bought it new for $219 from Bloor Cycle in Toronto. It's a touring bike with 27" road tires on aluminum rims, center-pull brakes, Reynolds 531 double butted steel tubing and a real Brooks leather seat. A couple of summers ago I got it out of storage, completely tore it down, cleaned it and replaced hopelessly broken stuff. The rear derailleur was useless (broken idler gears) so I bought the closest thing I could find that would fit. Everything has changed on bikes since this was manufactured, so the chain widths are different. That means I can only reach 8 gears now instead of the original 10.

But it runs and the ride is wonderful. I love the shock-absorbant feel of steel. I've ridden modern fat-tubed aluminum bikes and they just feel heavy and lifeless to me.

black (repainted) peugot UO-8 frame. elk hide wrapped handlebars & brake lever. old style red tail fender (see profile for shop info).

No fancy lugwork but a lightish bike in spite of the steel rims and bars. Rosa double chainring and Simplex "Suicide Shifter", Mafacs. Rubber street pedals. Mavic Inal guards. Jos front light. And no particular reason to stick racing or randonneur bars on it with fancy pedals and try and flog it as a randonneur, which is the usual trick. Needs some cleaning and touching in, a chain, a thorough lube and it'll be perfect. Say 1950's ? Might just paint "Rene Who" on the DT.

One of the major differences between the usual Brooks Professional saddle is the three ventilation holes on top. There were only about 600 of these saddles made, it's said for the French market, with a small number being sold in the UK.

I was looking through some old photos and came across this one taken ten years ago. I was riding my Raleigh bicycle (I don't have it any more) with a Brooks saddle and a Carradice long flap saddle bag. I was riding one-handed and got the shot from behind - note the bike clips round my trousers :)
