Perhaps the most familiar member of the difficult-to-identify Empidonax group, the Least Flycatcher is a characteristic bird of large shade trees; its presence is most easily detected by its call. An incubating bird is surprisingly tame and will often allow itself to be touched or even lifted off the nest.

Cayuse Road, Umatilla County, OR. 6-17-19.
A least flycatcher I found chebecking away in a beautiful riparian stretch next to the Umatilla River - a rarity for Oregon.

I saw this Least flycatcher early in October on the New England asters as they were budding out. The Cornell Labs says they spend less than two months finding a mate, nest building, egg laying, and raising their young to independence. They start back to their wintering grounds early and arrive Aug. to Sept. Their numbers have dropped by 50% since the 1970s.
Aww, buddy, don't listen to them. I bet you catch the MOST flies.

I think the plumage looks pretty cool in this pose.
One of three species flycatcher all found in one small patch of park - must have had a good supply of bugs!

Least Flycatchers eat mostly insects. Summer diet is mostly insects, including many small wasps, winged ants, beetles, caterpillars, midges, and flies, with smaller numbers of true bugs, grasshoppers, and others. Also eats spiders, and occasionally a few berries.
..
..
Courtship behavior is not well known, but may involve male chasing female through the trees. Nest site is usually in sapling or small tree such as maple, birch, or ash, placed in a vertical fork in a branch.
