Igihozo Kevin, 11, studies at home due to coronavirus-related school closures, listening to his Primary 5 lessons on the radio every day.

On 15 March, the Government of Rwanda recommended that all schools to prevent the spread of Coronavirus. These closures have been extended to at least late April, with over 3 million of students now out of school and expected to learn at home.

Every lost day of learning can have detrimental impact on a child’s future. Rwanda’s students needed immediate solutions to help them learn from home.

“Radio is the most popular and accessible medium in Rwanda. As the national public broadcaster, Rwanda Broadcasting Agency’s radio stations reach almost 99 per cent of the population, including Radio Rwanda and five regional stations,” says Aldo Havugimana, Director of Radio with Rwanda Broadcasting Agency. “Given this expansive reach, radio lessons were identified as the most suitable immediate solution.”

As one of the Government’s key partners in education, UNICEF will continue to support remote learning materials for Rwanda’s students until schools reopen.

planning how the treehouse will look with Dad.

Because we didn't mix the coloring in with the water, we had portions freeze clear. I like the effect.

" Yup, I can definitely see some craters up there, Mom. Oh, and I want to colonize the moon someday so people can live there."

Zebar Apron-Dash of Delish. Students were asked to explore their culinary skills and cook a dish using at least two food crops taught in the chapter. During this lockdown, this school activity brought smiles on the faces of the students as they donned their chef hats and whipped some delicious food for their families. The entire activity taught the students many different aspects of food, especially the efforts made by the Indian farmers and how to manage with limited supplies during a global crisis. Students of class 10 experimented in kitchens and cooked delicious dishes. The entire activity was linked to a Geography chapter and was guided by Ms Pooja Kapania.

has been so great. i can change up what they do every day. the boys can SEE when they are done. besides language arts and math in the folders, sometimes the boys will find mazes, tangram cards, show and tell prompts, "run around the house 3 times", art projects, research projects, and many other things. i fill up the folders every night or first thing in the morning. this system has truly been a blessing to our schooling at home.

We are overwhelmed with the positive response from our students as well as parents. A chapter based activity on ‘Save Forests’ was held in class 9 under the guidance of Ms Jaskiran Sidhu. More than 200 students, as well as parents, shared their slogans and photographs with us. This activity also highlighted the theme and each family came up with innovative slogans. Activities like these keep our students engaged during this lockdown phase.
