Day 300 of 365 - Learn It Or Lose It
Day 48 of 50 (50mm for 50days)
I had a 'conversation' with on of my flickr friends today about manual focus. He is a big collector of old lenses and cameras that don't generally work together and ends up getting things like Olympus lenses to work with Canon body's through adapters and such. Obviously no auto focus is available in a situation like that. I brought up that manual focus is a challenge for me and the lensbaby I have had for almost a year has gotten almost no use because of it. So after my 50mm challenge (and yes I realize the lensbaby is also a 50mm) is over I will be spending some serious time with the lensbaby. I have committed to myself that if I don't learn to use it effectively very soon I am going to sell it. Hopefully that will motivate me. I love the idea of the lensbaby; I just haven't given it enough effort to make effective use of it yet.

PERSONAL FUN FACT: The Dolls of the World line was something I pretty much always enjoyed collecting. I used to ogle the dolls in stores when I was a kid, and by the time I was eleven or twelve, I really started delving into the line. I had quite a few Dolls of the World Barbies growing up. So naturally, I was very excited to learn that Mattel had continued this collection in the years that I was not collecting/playing with dolls. It just so happens that my first store bought Barbie as an adult was the 2011 Dolls of the World India Barbie--I managed to get her on sale after months of stalking her. As for this beauty, she was also a clearance purchase. However I had not really noticed her at stores until the day I found my doll. She was at the local Marshall's, for just $5! I can't remember exactly when I found her....it must have been sometime in 2013. This Philippines doll was one of the first few Barbies I purchased brand new at the store. I really haven't bought all that many Barbies at stores since my resurgence back into dolls in 2011. This is simply because I have such luck finding them secondhand, so why spend more money to have them new, when I'm far from picky?!! However, I am really grateful to have had the opportunity to get this doll for such a bargain. While she's not as captivating or as fabulous quality as my 2011 India Barbie, she's still superb! This doll has a much more mature facial screening and hair style, so in that way, she always makes me think of a maternal figure. I probably would have used her as a mother in our doll games, had I owned this lady as a kid!
This weekend, we started settling into our new art studio and bringing it to life, with the help of our maker art friends. Sarah moved boxes with art supplies, Mark helped set up the pegboards, Howard filled them with tools, Natalina decorated the shed, Jean set up an art bench and Phyllis treated us to fresh fruit.
It felt like an old-fashioned community barn raising! I am very lucky to have such a supportive group of friends, and am really grateful for all their hard work and creative touches.
Our new backyard makerspace is a wooden 12’ x 10’ Tuff Shed, made to order, opening into our patio. It will be a great place to make art with friends, prepare for my classes and work on new ‘pataphysical projects.
I’m so happy to finally have an open space to create in, after decades of clutter in my overcrowded office. Can’t wait to start making cool things in it!

Here are photos of our fourth maker art class for lower school children at the Lycée Français in Sausalito. Students are now making a Chinese New Year Wonderbox, creating a small diorama with an animal from the Chinese Zodiac in a decorated cardboard box -- combining art and technology to bring their work to life.
In this class, children started working on their animal characters, using wood figures we made earlier with a laser cutter. They explored different ways to make their animals move, using hobby motors connected to a AA batteries with alligator clips.
Students loved this activity, and all succeeded in making their motors work and animate their art, as this video shows. This hands-on, project-based activity seems effective for teaching how electricity and motors work, in a playful way that makes science more fun. The children are responding well to this approach: they learn by doing and seem engaged by the freedom to create their own interactive art.
