en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Patrick's_Blue

St. Patrick's Blue is officially the colour which appears on the Irish Presidential Standard (i.e. the flag of the President of Ireland) and the Coat of arms of Ireland. It also appears in the part of the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom representing Northern Ireland.

This blue and gold colour scheme is said to represent "the Ancient Colours of Ireland" [4] and are the colours also found on the coat of arms of "the Ancient City of Dublin" and the Flag of Munster (which evolved from the coat of arms of the Lordship of Ireland). The Flag of Connacht prominently features blue as well.

As the colours of University College Dublin, the blue and yellow scheme is officially called "St Patrick's Blue and Saffron" and is featured prominently on the institution's coat of arms. They are the original colours of the Catholic University of Ireland and date back to the inception of the College in the 1840s. The colours are used by various sports teams at the university such as such the University College Dublin Rowing Club[5]. For the fencing club at University College Dublin, the blue chosen as their St. Patrick's Blue is "Pantone 295", the same shade of blue as that is used on the pennant of the President of Ireland.[6]

Badge of the Most Illustrious Order of St Patrick. The statutes of the Order prescribed a sky blue riband; the exact shade of blue used varied over time.

A group of Sea Scouts associated with St. Patrick's Church in Dalkey near Dublin Port describes their troop neckerchief as "red with a St. Patrick's Blue border."[7]

The Irish Guards, an Irish regiment of the British Army, wear a plume of St. Patrick's Blue in their bearskins. The guards also wear a cap ornament depicting the eight-pointed star of the Most Illustrious Order of St Patrick.[8] Although the last surviving knight died in 1974, the order technically still exists. Knight of the order wore a blue mantle lined with white silk and a blue velvet hat. The ribbands of the order were blue as well.[9][10]

[edit] St. Patrick's Day green

Green, the colour most widely associated with Ireland, with Irish people, and with St. Patrick's Day in modern times, may have become gained its prominence through the phrase "the wearing of the green" meaning to wear a shamrock on one's clothing. At many times in Irish history to do so was seen as a sign of Irish nationalism or loyalty to the Roman Catholic faith. St. Patrick used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the pre-Christian Irish.[11] The change to Ireland's association with green rather than blue was probably begun around the 1750s.[12]

I wanted to clean up what looked like dead pixels from the previous post. I realize my post work sucks with these shots but I will learn from it and get better.

As I ventured out to Palouse Falls to catch some Milky way shots I ran into a bit of bad weather. But not the bad that leaves you drenched with a shiver. This was more of a tingling with delight because the hairs on the back of your neck won't go down kind of bad! If you could even call it bad, maybe my choice of words didn't describe the awesomeness of this weather! haha ok enough, I had to wait for this two hour storm to pass by. It was my first time shooting lightning and at a difficult scene at that! I eventually got the hang of it and kept firing until it died off and I got what I came for. The milky way shined bright with a layer of clouds holding it up! Check out my previous post of the stars!

I always learn something when taking photos. Even though I have taken tens of thousands of them, I still manage to learn something pretty much every shutter click.

Tonight, I learned that to get the most amazing lunar eclipse photos, you need a motorized tracker that can match the earth's rotation.

So, without one of those devices, I had to bump up the ISO a ton, and bring the shutter speed higher than I really wanted.

But I still got a cool memory. This was right at peak (9:48 pm).

Some stats:

ISO 3200

1s shutter speed

f/6.3

Lens at 400mm

Image stabilization turned off

Shutter release

Shooting from live view so no lens movement at all

Long exposure noise reduction enabled

Processed in Topaz DeNoise to knock the noise down a bit, and Nik Sharpener Efex Pro to sharpen it back up after the noise reduction (I love that combination for sharp/low noise images).

I spent some time this past summer trying to learn how better to secure images of pollinators of all kinds. That project was motivated by my sunrise walks down an abandoned road southeast of Ottawa, where overgrown wildflowers grew in thick and deep bunches on the sides of the road, and where butterflies and moths and bees and wasps spent the first light re-energizing for the new day.

The subjects of the photographs had a lot more freedom to drift away from the road to the wild meadows than I had - old fences and thick vegetation kept me pretty hemmed in. That meant having to get creative in most cases, which was part of learning how to manage the situation. I really liked this image, shot through a wall of vegetation to find the Skipper - not an especially exotic one for people who know these creatures - who was drinking from the wildflower.

This activity and the many early mornings it entailed was a response to the impact of the pandemic on birding and bird photography. Most of my usual places had not adjusted particularly well to the changed circumstances, and so the solitary mornings were just what the public health officials ordered.

I really hope everyone is safe and has a great holiday break. I now know people (healthcare workers) who are scheduled to be vaccinated shortly in Ottawa so things are slowly moving forward - please take care.

And many sincere thanks to the people who look at, like and/or comment on my images. I really appreciate the connection. I spend a lot of my free time looking at and learning from others, but this is an amazing community, and it offers a lot to me in different ways - especially with the superb images people are posting. So: many thanks, and stay safe.

Learn more about this fascinating bat from STRI Post-Doctoral Fellow Mariana Muñoz-Romo:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKK8lbx9DSI&feature=emb_logo

Haven’t been out in the field much recently, so here is a picture from a few years back - a Fringe-lipped Bat - Trachops cirrhosis - from Chan Chich Lodge in Belize. It’s not a particularly interesting or compelling effort - but it turns out to be of at least minor importance.

By way of background, there are lots of environmentalists and scientists looking for images to illustrate their projects and flickr is an important searching ground. That’s one reason why I make a careful effort to title and tag my wildlife photos with as much data as possible.

In this case, a postdoctoral fellow in Central America needed a picture of Fringe-lipped Bat. In the last few days she was able to find in my photo stream the one I’ve put in the comments section below. On an off chance, she also asked via flickrmail if I had any images of this species showing an orange crust on its wings. The article she is writing concerns this component of the species’s physiology - apparently something related to its mating habits.

I didn’t recall any such thing, but did take a look through my Lightroom catalog. Sure enough, I found the above image from the same photoshoot. When I processed it and forwarded it to the researcher, she was ecstatic. Her joy in having an image perfect for her purposes gave me a nice feeling as well.

Things weren' t going my way

I was feeling down all the time

You held me through the pain

Stood by me in the rain

So today I'm free

Feeling fine all the time

Don't have to wait and see

We're on a one way dream

Like the clouds I'm flying and I'm...

And now I' m flying high above the sky

And it' s all because of you

I got a feeling in my heart

My life can really start

And it' s all because of you
