This is the surviving one of a pair of these plates... the other had an unfortunate kiln accident and is currently undergoing E6000 treatment. I'm thrilled with how it came out... the veins in the lettuce leaves are actually textured down into the clay and the edges of the leaf are rolled up slightly. The plate measures approx 9 inches across.

When I took this I was rather close to a young man's car. He asked if I needed something and I explained what I was doing. When I first saw the leaf it was this was up, but a small gust of wind blew it over. I turned it back for the photo.

The man asked why I hadn't taken it the other way up. I turned it over and took a photo and let him look at the two. He said that this one was great and he could see why I'd taken it as it was. He thanked me for what I can only say was my lessons of observation!

I came home yesterday to find that my wife had left this leaf on top of a book I'm reading. It seemed oddly poetic. It hinted at some sort of meaning, but who knows what? Odd that it was a Murakami book - his writing is filled with the elevation of ordinary objects to some ungraspable significance.

Leaf Litter is slowly being broken down by bacteria, fungi, and small insects we call decomposer. Once the leaf Litter is broken down enough it becomes part of the organic layer in the soil, which then or provides nutrients for trees and plant life.

Took this on a morning macro course in our Village Hall. This was taken hand held (both!) in the porch with the sun at the back of the leaf showing all the veins.

A young woman carefully cuts the thinly pounded gold leaf. It is important to achieve small squares – without tears in the precious gold.

I think she's sizing up this leaf for suitability. This runner bean leaf was not what she wanted.
