19 years after designing the first of a new revolutionary type of full flight simulator Concept 90, in May 2007, there was a return to the same site in Crawley UK, to create an all new device.
Thales Training & Simulation, a division of the Thales Group, have become the new owners of what was once Rediffusion Simulation, and were at that time producing the spiritual evolution of the C90 design.
Over time, the original concept had been diluted and developed by the various owners, and Thales realised that a whole new product would restimulate the market.
Concept 90 had addressed how to create a shorter leadtime from order to customer approval, but the new product brief sought to reduce that time yet further.
The goal was to develop a craft which could be commissioned in modules, and then shipped directly to the customers site, for final assembly.
Previously the commissioned simulator had been built, approved, stripped down and rebuilt at the customers, which had required a seriously large escorted shipping activity.
The new craft would have to fit into standard shipping containers.From a design perspective, this posed many new challenges.
Steve Harper SHADO Design, in conjunction with SEMCON Engineering Ltd, began the project in earnest in August 2007, and from the onset, the modularity of the design was used to help to create bold character lines, shapes and features, to enhance the crafts appearance.
The unique graphical style was inspired by ‘a Bird in Flight’, and the first sketches, created by Steve Harper during the first meetings, were soon developed as ALIAS surfaces by Di Pryce Evans, in a matter of a couple of days.
Complimented by a simple and practical Interior theme, sketched out by Laurence Cutts, the design was soon established and the full engineering programme could begin.
Throughout the simultaneous development process, there were many long established assumptions questioned, and as a result, the simplicity of the rationalised design evolved into a beautiful and practical package.
A product which ‘can fly, but never leaves the ground, and has legs but cannot walk’.
At the ‘Reality Seven’ launch in February 2009, the design was shown to have exceeding the customers’ expectations, and has once again revolutionised the Flight Simulation Industry.

Founder John Arenas previously started another office-space company, called Stratis Business Centers, back in 1997. In the 80’s he had started off working for Turner Construction and then for Citigroup’s workout loan group, so he had a good understanding of real estate, and specifically of office space, from a practical and a financial/valuation point of view. His initial idea was to create a network of office space facilities that would license short-term space (hourly, monthly and annually) to customers nationwide as an alternative to conventional long-term lease commitments. In order to grow without much capital (since such an ambitious idea was tough to fund), he created a franchise network. And in order to offer something special, Stratis developed the technology to control the office space and equipment centrally, including interfaces with Nortel phone systems, Pitney Bowes meters and Konica copiers as well as aits own proprietary meeting room reservation system. He ended up selling Stratis to Regus, the temporary-space giant, and left to start Worktopia in early 2004.

In essence, just as eBay allowed people to turn stuff collecting dust in attics into valuable inventory , Worktopia is allowing not just unused office space, but the chunks of time that any particular piece of office space is unused, to be turned into valuable inventory. Industries such as airlines – notably! – and hotels, where fixed costs were higher, got into this early on; they couldn’t afford to hold airplane seats or rooms and not use them. Whereas most companies treat real estate as an unoptimized asset, and only recently started thinking about it strategically. How can we get revenue out of that fancy training center the chairman ordered, but that we use only a few times a year? What about the fourth floor, that we have been going to expand into every year since 2001? Or alternatively, should we really lease that new building, when we can place our salespeople in a temporary office and adjust the space to match our pace?
Despite his familiarity with the market, Arenas commissioned a study to figure out exactly how people procure short-term space and how they want to. In short, says Arenas, “They want a sense of control. They want real-time information to compare alternatives, from a trusted, unbiased source. Typically, they’re buying with a leadtime of weeks – not two years like for a convention – and they don’t have time to do a lot of research.” Until now, there was no marketplace where they could find this. Many of them resort to calling hotels directly – hardly an unbiased source – or rely on local colleagues.
Enter Worktopia – which opened to the public last June. So far it is handling about 12,00 searches – resulting in $1 million in transactions – per month. Its revenues include 8 to 10 percent commissions on temporary office space (payable by the supplier). Hotels and other meeting-room marketers can also subscribe for $2000 to $4500 per hotel per year for a meeting room marketing service, which allows the hotels to offer the rooms commission-free (and overcomes the touchy issue that hotels make much of their money not on the meeting rooms but on the ancillary services and accommodations).
Its users are grateful; much of the challenge is at the other hand. Even among big suppliers such as hotel chains, only Hyatt and Hilton have central databases of availability. Worktopia is currently developing a variety of analytical tools for its users, along with hosted services powered by Worktopia for big providers of office space and ultimately other kinds of short-term business resources.
Finding the long tail of customers is relatively easy compared with finding the long tail of suppliers – and certifying quality. For now, Worktopia is building out a supplier base through industry contacts, but eventually it will probably use customer feedback to create a reputation system, following the lead of many other marketplaces.

Well, I finally did it. I went and bought a hybrid car. Let's face it - I love my SUV. It gets me where I need to go, handles well in the snow, carries all my stuff with room to spare, and can take a big crew out to lunch. But the gas prices of late have been hard to stomach.
Enter the hybrid. My mom has a Ford Escape hybrid, so I'm familiar wth driving one. I'd been researching other hybrid options, as well as non-hybrid but good mileage options, and calculating the cost per mile with gas at the $4.00 level. Every time I did the calculation, with the number of miles I drive in a week/month, the Prius was the clear winner. Yes - I was an engineer and created a spreadsheet with calculations and everything.
The next challenge was actually finding a Prius. I went through the AAA auto program, and contacted all of the Toyota dealers within a 50 mile radius of my house. None had any in stock, and most were quoting 4-20 week leadtimes. The dealer closest to my parents' house put me on an email list that notified me when they would be getting a shipment in, and it would be first come, first served. I hadn't thought very highly of that dealer in the past, so I never really responded to their emails asking if I was interested. Last week, an email came in listing a pretty large number of Priuses (Prii?) that would be available, so I decided last Saturday to go in and take a look. It just so happened that they had the options package I was interested in, so I decided to go for it. They originally said that it was on the boat from Japan, and I should be able to pick it up sometime around August 1. We did all of the finance work, getting things ready for signature - for all intents and purposes, the Prius was mine, and I hadn't put any money down or signed any finance papers yet (we'd done a simple contract at that point, so I wasn't totally unprotected). Yesterday on my way back to the office from a doctor's appointment (Dr F wanted me to go and see if I had a blood clot somewhere in my left leg because of the swelling, but he didn't think it was likely - the ultrasound tech said she didn't see anything either, so the swelling is still a mystery), I got a phone call from the dealer saying my car had arrived and I could pick it up anytime on Saturday. My dad took me over there this morning, I wrote a big check, we did a final test drive, and I took ownership of my brand new Magnetic Gray Prius at about 11:30am! When I got in the car before we signed all of the papers, the odometer showed all of one mile. That was pretty awesome.
Since my SUV is fully paid off, and it works so well in the snow and mountains, I'm keeping it, rather than try and sell it in this crappy market for SUVs. I'll also drive it once or twice a week to keep it in good working order.
