The Lead Historic District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in December 1974. Photograph from 2012.

The history of Lead is tied closely to that of the Homestake Gold Mine company, since the initial 1876 mineral claim. A San Francisco syndicate consisting of Sen. George Hearst, James B. Haggin, and Lloyd Trevis—established the Homestake mining company in 1877. The mine's workforce included immigrants from England, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, the Balkans, and Scandinavia. Part of the mine is now used by the Sanford Underground Research Facility.
