I went to Kedleston Hall last Friday to defer stir craziness. The National Trust had waived entrance fees to all its parks as a good will gesture in the face of Covid-19. Unfortunately, the little grey cells weren’t firing on all cylinders and I found I’d forgotten to take ND filters with me. The day was bright and sunny, which meant I couldn’t achieve long exposures to smooth the water, even at f22. The mental block further prevented me from thinking of layer stack mode to achieve the effect sans filter. Fear not, thought I, Kedleston is only 20 minutes from home; it’s free so I’ll go back next week. But as restrictions tighten the National Trust has shut all parks until further notice. No return visit, then. I did, however, have two shots taken at 1/50 second and these have been used in this image. Layer stack mode set to mean.

Shanghai peak hour traffic on a Friday evening. This freeway intersection has five separate levels merging together. This shot was composited from 21 separate images I shot for a time lapse sequence which is part of a DVD I will be releasing next year. I placed each individual image on a separate layer and used the lighten mode to add the layers into one final composited shot.
This image could sure use some lens distorion correction too as it was a 12mm wide angle shot and the buildings show severe barrel distortion.
These frames were never intended to be used as a still photo image even though I took them as NEF files at maximum D50 resolution. If I was to take this photo again I would probably opt for a longer exposure time - say 8 or 10 seconds @ f11 but by stacking the multiple images I was able to get a similar result.

Hurricane Sandy dumped snow along the Blue Ridge Mountains in 2012, but it didn't hang around long with the rising temperatures. In Montebello, atop Spy Rock (el. 3885) the vantage point is jaw-dropping on a clear day, but a day in the clouds isn't half bad. This view is looking east into the Tye, Piney, and James River valley below.

Day 133 of 365
"What's at the End of Your Rainbow?, or, "Why is This Image Cooler Than You Think It Is?"
Layer Stacking!!! What? Layer stacking!! I don't care. This evening some friends gave my kid a rainbow slinky and two emoji figurines. Naturally, they HAD to be the subjects of today's image. Why is this image so cool? Well.....it's not. With that said, it actually is......to a photographic nerd like myself. Why, you don't ask? I'm glad you asked!! So, I shot this with a 100 macro lens. This is important because it has a very shallow depth of field when wide open. Imagine if you will, a portrait or headshot. Now imagine the eyes are in focus, but the nose and ears are totally out of focus. Does that make sense? That is a shallow depth of field. So, today's image is a composite of six exposures, shot in sequence, from the tree, all the way to the figurine at camera-left. Now, in the exposure of the tree, the entire rest of the image is completely out of focus. By racking (changing) focus between exposures, I am making sure that every "layer" of the scene is tack-sharp. In this case, I decided to blur the slinky a bit. Because the depth of field is so shallow, the front edge is in focus, but the back end is blurred. The only giveaway is the right hand of the camera-left emoji, and his legs. The depth of field is actually so shallow that while his head is in focus, his legs (only slightly off the same plane) are out of focus. Pardon me for layers of nerdism. Regardless, thanks for dropping in!!!

We interrupt our scheduled program of Hawaiian tourista shots to bring you last night's lunacy. A triple blind pan/zoom and a layer stack to get some more contrast/detail to the moons. This is one exposure. A basic pan/zoom really. Next month I'll play with some filters and try to get colored satellites.
Private Idaho - B52s
Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo
You're living in your own Private Idaho
Living in your own Private Idaho
Underground like a wild potato.
Don't go on the patio.
Beware of the pool,
blue bottomless pool.
It leads you straight
right throught the gate
that opens on the pool.
You're living in your own Private Idaho.
You're living in your own Private Idaho.
Keep off the path, beware the gate,
watch out for signs that say "hidden driveways".
Don't let the chlorine in your eyes
blind you to the awful surprise
that's waitin' for you at
the bottom of the bottomless blue blue blue pool.
You're livin in your own Private Idaho. Idaho.
You're out of control, the rivers that roll,
you fell into the water and down to Idaho.
Get out of that state,
get out of that state you're in.
You better beware.
You're living in your own Private Idaho.
You're living in your own Private Idaho.
Keep off the patio,
keep off the path.
The lawn may be green
but you better not be seen
walkin' through the gate that leads you down,
down to a pool fraught with danger
is a pool full of strangers.
You're living in your own Private Idaho,
where do I go from here to a better state than this.
Well, don't be blind to the big surprise
swimming round and round like the deadly hand
of a radium clock, at the bottom, of the pool.
I-I-I-daho
I-I-I-daho
Woah oh oh woah oh oh woah oh oh
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah
Get out of that state
Get out of that state
You're living in your own Private Idaho,
livin in your own Private.... Idaho
