Grace Kelly was already an established actress when she headed the American delegation to the Cannes Film Festival in 1955. She met the charming Prince Rainier III at a photo shoot during the festival, and afterwards toured the Prince's gardens and zoo.
Grace resumed acting after returning to America, but began a private correspondence with Rainier. The Prince visited America later that year under speculation that he was looking for a wife: a 1918 treaty stated that if Rainier did not produce an heir, Monaco would revert to France.
After a year of courtship containing โa good deal of rational appraisal on both sides,โ the Prince met Grace's family and proposed. They were married in April 1956 to great fanfare. Grace acquired 142 official titles, the counterparts to Rainier's, and later bore the Prince three children. The birthday of their first child, Princess Caroline, was declared a national holiday, marked by free champagne which flowed throughout the principality.
The royal couple remained married until Grace died in an automobile accident in 1982. The Prince grieved her deeply and did not remarry. He was buried alongside her after his death in 2005.

John Adams, our nation's second president, met Abigail in 1762. He was quickly attracted by her shy, bookish charms. Two years later they were married by Abigail's father, a Reverend. After their marriage ceremony Abigail and John rode a single horse together to their new home, a small cottage in Massachusetts.
A leading voice of the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, John sought advice and solace from Abigail back home in Boston. Abigail is best remembered for these letters, which demonstrated her strong intellectual capacity and her earnest love for John. John was strongly attached to Abigail, who was an excellent mother to their children while he was away.
During John's presidency Abigail was the first First Lady to preside over the White House. She was opinionated and politically active, nicknamed โMrs. Presidentโ by her opponents. John sincerely trusted Abigail's knowledge and opinion, and often sought her approval. After John left the White House he rejoined Abigail in Massachusetts, where she died in 1818. Greatly saddened by his beloved wife's death, John died eight years later on July 4th, 1826.
Napoleon and Josephine met in a way dissimilar to our other couples. Napolean was a Major-General in the French Army and in order to achieve his goals he needed a rich wife. Josephine saw him as a possible patron, and cultivated his friendship. They became lovers in 1795. Napolean proposed in January 1796, and they wed on March 9, 1796, just before he took command of the army in Italy.

In 1923, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon married Prince Albert, after turning down his first two proposals. She was the first commoner to legally marry into the royal family in several centuries. They had two daughters together, Elizabeth (now Elizabeth II, the current queen of England) born in 1926. And Margaret, who was born in 1930.
In 1936, Albert's brother, King Edward VIII, abdicated to marry Wallis Simpson, a divorcee, and Albert was crowned King of Great Britain and Ireland as George VI.
They had a very loving relationship that redefined the British Royal Family. The bond between King George VI and Queen Elizabeth we remarkable. Although the King was initially crippled by a terrible stammer he overcame this problem with incredible support from his Queen. The couple gave great hope to their country during a time of war. This history formed the basis of the 2011 Oscar for Best Picture, "The Kings Speech."
Although most people tend to think that Richard and Elizabeth first met on the set of Cleopatra in 1963, that isn't the true story. Richard wrote in his diary nine years earlier, โA girl sitting on the other side of the pool lowered her book, took off her sunglasses and looked at me...She was lavish. She was a dark, unyielding largesse. She was, in sort, too bloody much, and not only that she was ignoring me.โ
Years later, the two would meet again. They began their love affair on the set of Cleopatra and their lives were forever intertwined. Burton and Taylor were married between 1964 and 1974 and then again in 1975 for another year. Although married twice and divorced twice the two were the loves of each other's lives.
Just days before Richard's unexpected death in 1984 at the age of 58 he had written Elizabeth a letter. In it, she says, "In it he told [me] what he wanted. Home was where Elizabeth was, and he wanted to come home." She never moved the letter from her bedside and after she passed away, at the age of 79, Elizabeth demanded to be buried with the letter from her true love.

John met Yoko at a gallery exhibiting her art in London in November 1966. Intrigued, John tried to hammer a nail into piece of wood, which was actual a piece in Yoko's exhibit. Yoko stopped him; she had never heard of The Beatles. She offered to let him hammer the nail for five shillings. John made a famous counter offer. โWell, I'll give you an imaginary five shillings and hammer an imaginary nail in.โ
โThat's when we really met,โ Lennon said. โThat's when we locked eyes and she got it and I got it, and, as they say in all the interviews we do, the rest is history.โ
John and Yoko began seeing each other while John was still married. Yoko called John at home, and he began making excuses to his wife. Then in May 1968 while his wife was on vacation, John invited Yoko to visit. John's wife, Cynthia, returned from her trip to find Yoko wearing her bathrobe drinking tea with John.
John soon divorced Cynitha and married Yoko in March 1969. They lived together through The Beatles' breakup writing music and promoting pacifist campaigns. They were intensely in love. โBefore Yoko and I met, we were half a person.... But we are two halves, and together we're a whole.โ
Eventually after living for years under intense public spotlight John and Yoko's relationship was strained. They separated in 1973 but remained in constant communication until they reunited two years later. Their son Sean was born shortly after, and John retired from music to care for him. John was murdered outside their apartment in 1980.
Annie Oakley was raised in Darke County, Ohio. Known throughout the area as a tomboy, she was an impressive talent with the rifle. In 1881, the Baughman and Butler shooting act arrived in Cincinnati. Frank Butler, who was the star of their show, exclaimed that he could beat any local marksman.
When Butler was told that he had been challenged by a young lady he found it amusing and accepted. Annie won the challenge as well as Butler's heart. They were married in 1882.
The couple was married for 44 years until Annie died in 1962. Frank, heart-broken, followed her to the grave only 18 days after her death.
Lauren Bacal and Humphrey Bogart met on the set of "To Have and Have Not" (1944). Upon meeting her, Bogie told Lauren, โI saw your test. We're going to have a lot of fun together.โ
And they did. Although separated by 26 years, the electricity between them was obvious, and Lauren's hard work ethic matched Humphrey's experienced confidence. Making light of her age, Humphrey nicknamed Lauren 'Baby,' a name he continued to call her by for years. Humphrey was unhappily married when they met and could only meet Lauren discreetly, exchanging passionate love letters while they were apart. Their attraction to each other grew almost imperceptibly, as they worked together onstage. But the more they worked together, the more their on-set romance became authentic.
Their relationship started, by Lauren's account, when she was in her dressing room with Humphrey. He leaned over, put his hand under her chin, and kissed her. Pulling a matchbook from his pocket, he then asked for her number.
After a long and tumultuous break-up, Humphrey divorced his wife in 1945. Bacal waited for Bogey during his attempts to save his marriage--her patience was rewarded. They were married in the spring of 1945. They had a happy marriage and two children, Stephen and Leslie. They remained together until Bogey's death in 1957.
Buried with him is a small gold whistle, which Bogart had given to Bacall, before they married. In reference to their first movie together, it was inscribed: "If you want anything, just whistle."
Bonnie and Clyde first met briefly in early 1930 and were immediately smitten by each other. When Clyde got out of jail in 1932, Bonnie joined his gang and became his partner in crime. She remained his loyal companion during the rest of their two-year crime spree.
Preferring to rob small groceries and gas-stations, Bonnie and Clyde's national bank-robbing notoriety developed out of playful photographs the couple had taken at a hideout, one of Bonnie posing with a cigar and revolver. The good-looking couple were small-time thieves until those photographs were published, catapulting them into the public spotlight as raucous criminal superstars.
The couple was killed by police in 1934. A posse of six officers had been tracking Bonnie and Clyde's movements and set up an ambush along a rural road in Louisiana. As the outlaw couple stopped to talk to a man planted by the police along the side of the road, the posse opened fire, killing Bonnie and Clyde.
Over 20,000 people attended Bonnie's funeral. Bonnie and Clyde were some of the first celebrity criminals of the modern era: their romantic notoriety spawned countless detective stories, several Hollywood movies, many songs and a few stage plays. Bonnie and Clyde, a 1967 film featuring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, won two Academy Awards and reignited interest in the duo. A 2011 film revisiting the couple's crime spree is in the works.
Czar Nicholas II and Alexandra were married in April 1894. Nicolas II insisted that they change the date of their nuptials, moving them up one full year, since he relied so heavily on Alexandra for her support and opinions. They lived a lavish life of luxury as the last rulers of the Romanov dynasty until their downfall.The entire family, the Czar, Czarina, four daughters and one son were executed in July 1918.
Pierre and Marie met in Paris, France in 1894 at the School of Physics, where Pierre held a job as a Professor. They fell in love quickly, just one year later they were married.
The couple shared a passion for physics and spent a majority of their time together conducting research and pursuing work in the laboratory. Their days spent researching were under very difficult conditions but their work paid off. Together they were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903, for their study into the spontaneous radiation discovered by Becquerel.
After Pierre tragically passed away in 1906, Marie took his place as Professor of General Physics in the Faculty of Sciences. She continued to pursue each of the dreams they had spent years working on together.
Janet and Isaac met in 1973 several months after Isaac separated from his first wife. They were married shortly after.
The couple shared the same interest in science fiction and even collaborated on a number of books together. They spent almost 20 years together before Isaac passed away in 1992.
During George Burns's early career he often partnered with a young woman onstage. He never clicked with any of them until he met Gracie Allen in 1923. โAnd all of a sudden,โ he reminisced many years later, โthe audience realized I had a talent. They were right. I did have a talentโand I was married to her for 38 years.โ
While touring together, George found himself falling in love with Gracie. It took him three years to woo her, and finally won her over by accidentally making her cry; Gracie figured that if George meant enough to her to make her cry, she must be in love with him.
The comedic couple performed together on radio, television, film and onstage for over twenty-five years. Gracie retired in 1958 due to health reasons and died of heart disease in 1964.
George absorbed himself in his career after her death, working on hit television series and movies. He visited Gracie's grave once a month until he died in 1996 aged 100. He was interred next to her, their tombstone reading, โGracie Allen and George BurnsโTogether Again.โ
Zelda & Fitzgerald met in Montgomery, Alabama. Initially, Fitzgerald was unable to convince Zelda that he could provide her with the type of lifestyle she demanded and she broke off their engagement. Fitzgerald moved back in with his parents to revise his book, "The Romantic Egoist." And in the fall of 1919, after Scribners picked up the newly completed, "The Side of Paradise", their engagement was back on.
Fitzgerald passed away at the age of 44 in 1940. Zelda struggled with schizophrenia during the early 1930's and was very fragile throughout the rest of her life. Their tempestuous relationship has been the basis for many works.

Bella and Marc met in 1909. At the time, Marc was the broke apprentice of Leon Bakst. Marc has stated that their love started the moment they saw each other and continued for 35 years.
In 1944 Bella passed away due to a viral infection. Just 2 years later, Marc published what has become her most famous book, The Burning Lights.

"Magneto and the Laws of Self-Attraction"
Today I went to shoot my photograph for the day......and I came up with nothing. I mean NOTHING. I was convinced that I only had 137 concepts, and that the series was over. After going back a few hours later, I came up with this portrait. His name is Magneto (pronounced with a short "e"). Only after I attempted to fight the laws of magnetism, I came up with his body shape. I would have had his circular head facing the camera, but he said no. However, this did allow for the idea of the profile, and then the beard. There are three lights working in this portrait. The key is a snooted speedlight, and it is directly above him. I wanted a sort of streetlight look to it, and had to do what I could to avoid any reflections in the mirrors. The second light is a bare speedlight with a blue gel (full CTB), and it is located behind Magneto, and to camera-left. Lastly, there is a strip box at camera-right, and it is just adding a kiss of light to fill in the shadows. Because I was shooting with my 100mm macro, there was very shallow depth of field. To counter this a bit (I wanted his reflection to be somewhat in focus), I shot at and f/32. To those not familiar with f stops, imagine the camera's eye was almost completely closed. When we squint, thing are more in focus.....it is the same with a camera. The price for this sharpness is the need to crank up the power on the lights. Olivia and Samuel met in December 1867 through her brother Charles. He courted her throughout the following year by letter and in 1870 they were married.
Although they lived a lavish life because of Olivia's inheritance and Samuel's success in the literary world, the family was plagued by tragedy. They were constantly struck with personal struggles; two of their four children passed away and they had to declare bankruptcy when their investments went awry.
The two worked together during hard times, side by side. Olivia would help her husband with his lectures as well as edit books for him. Up until days before she passed away Olivia was seen editing books for Samuel .

Lately, I've been trying to work out whether I believe that we can get what we need by the power of thought (The Secret. If you haven't seen the film yet, give it a try. You'll like it or you won't like it, but either way it'll give you little idea snacks that you'll probably want to nibble on for a while.) Are the Laws of Attraction really so powerful? How do you possibly explain the connection between thought (meditation, technically) and action?
It surely throws the argument in a very specific direction for me after I uncovered this picture I'd clipped. A hope become manifest, and all that...
It makes me think.
So a month ago Chak, the ex-editor of New Man magazine asked me to join him and 3 ladies for a discussion about the 'laws of attraction' - what women think of men, the dating scene, yadda, yadda, yadda.
Well the magazine's out already and after looking at it, I realised that I have achieved the ultimate level of court jester ;p
It is rather embarassing reading what I said (without thinking!!) during the session but at the same time, I find it absolutely hilarious. The funny thing is, if I were younger, I would've been absolutely mortified.
