A male Wall Brown Butterfly on Buddleia at RSPB Saltholme.
Many thanks to all who take the time to view, comment or fav my images.
The Large Wall Brown (Lasiommata maera) belongs to the Nymphalidae family and is found in most of continental Europe, central Asia and North Africa in altitudes up to 2,000 m. It prefers rocky and stony areas and edges of forests.
Female Wall Brown.
I was very lucky to come across this very fresh female Wall Brown as it is quite late in the first brood flight period for one this good. I followed it for a few minutes and it nectared a few times before landing in this spot. Unfortunately there were a couple of blades of grass in front of it, and as the Wall Brown are very flighty and difficult to approach I wasn't expecting to be able to gently move the grass away with my free hand and still get a few shots of the butterfly still sitting there.

A beautiful 3rd brood Wall Brown photographed yesterday during a count of the species on my 4 mile circuit. This was one of the 51 counted on the circuit, with another 20 plus seen away from the circuit later on that included quite a bit of egg laying.
