The 16th century fortress has long been a romantic ruin, which today has olive and fig trees. Climb the walls to perfectly see the city's towers.
Its imposing 'Rocca' (great views) is the high bulwark of the citadel.

La Rocca is an impressive rocky promontory that monitors and protects the charming town of Cefalu in Sicily from a height of 269m above sea level.
Historic Rocca San Felice in ancient Samnium's Ansanto Valley. This area has been settled since Neolithic times, and was a scared spot for the nearby sulfuric springs that spun to the Samnite Goddess Mefites. Virgil wrote of the shrine at the volcano Ampsanctus in Samnium. in his epic poem Aeneid. Due to the strong following after Rome conquest of the region, Via Appia was passed less than a KM, from the temple. Many offerings were and can still be found.

The Rocca d'Orcia, more correctly known as the Rocca di Tentennano, is a fortress standing on a pinnacle high above the Val d'Orcia with the small village of the Rocca d'Orcia just below, and the valley spreading out on all sides. The Rocca is constructed of limestone and, like so many other castles in the area, played a role in the interminable territorial conflicts between Florence and Sienna, and was also a strong point on the Via Francigena, the pilgrim's road leading from Canterbury, through France and Italy, to Rome.
Most of the Rocca was built between 1250 and 1258, but the peak on which it stands was used as a military lookout and defensive point from the 10 C onward...
The Rocca di Tentennano was abandoned in the early 20 C. The last owners, the Scotto family, donated it to the country and it is now restored and open to the public.

Get to know the history of this little country, the elegant and picturesque Italian village and built in the Middle Ages.
Among them, villages erected during the Middle Ages, at strategic points - at the top of hills, where you have a panoramic view of the region (and the enemies that could approach).
The Middle Ages arose in Italy in the year 476 AD, with the fall of the Roman Empire and the rise of feudalism and the Catholic Church. And this was reflected in a transformation of the country's scenarios.
For you to understand a little more about this period, I went to some of these medieval villages that, with their ruins, buildings and surrounded by bucolic landscapes, survived the time and today function as open-air museums.
