Day 2: Lares (Hot Spring) - Ipsaycocha)
Day 3: Ipsaycocha - Patacancha - Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes
Day 4: Aguas Calienties - Machu Picchu - Cusco
Day 1: Cusco - Lares (Hot Spring)
We leave Cusco at 6:00am in a private transport and drive for an approximated 4h through part of the Sacred Valley to then head towards Lares (3100m/10168ft), a little rural village located in the beautiful valley of the same name, hosting some well-known hot springs. Upon arrival, we leave our equipment and continue towards Choquecancha, an impressive archaeological site with amazing views of the neighboring valleys. After our visit, we hike back to Lares, where we can enjoy an evening dip in its hot springs before or after our dinner is served. Our camp will be set next to the thermal baths and access is free the whole night.
Day 2: Lares (Hot Spring) - Ipsaycocha)
After an early wake up and breakfast, we meet our horsemen and horses and leave our campsite at around 9.00am to walk along an ascending path that will lead us to Huacahuasi, (3600m/11808ft). This remote Andean community is located in an impressive valley, where the typical lifestyle and house constructions of the Quechua communities living at high altitude can be appreciated. We stop to visit a typical house and family, before we enjoy our lunch. In the early afternoon, we continue our hike ascending toward the mountain pass of Ipsay (4450m/14596ft/3h), walking across little communities and Andean flats (pampas) with the presence of llamas and alpacas. The pass offers impressive views of Mount Veronica and the surrounding snow-capped peaks. Just half an hour from this point is Ipsayqocha, a beautiful lagoon next to which we set our camp and spend the night, amidst awesome scenery.
Day 3: Ipsaycocha - Patacancha - Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes
After two full days of hiking today is much easier. After an early breakfast we walk downhill through a wide-open valley for about 2½ hours until we arrive at the village of Patacancha. We will have a chance to view some textiles made by the people of this community - the high quality weavings are famous for their intricate designs reflecting aspects of their everyday lives and culture. After we also get the chance to walk slowly down the valley to Willoq, another Quechua village where the locals still wear their traditional dress and are proud to maintain their cultural identity. From Patacancha we will take our transport further down the valley to Inca town of Ollantaytambo where we will rest and have lunch, then catch our afternoon train to AguasCalientes. This is an amazing journey that starts in the Quechua highlands and slowly descends to lush tropical vegetation as we near AguasCalientes. Total journey time about 1½ hours. Tonight we stay in the small quaint town of Machu Picchu.
Day 4: Aguas Calienties - Machu Picchu - Cusco
5 am breakfast then at 5.30am we get the bus to Machu Picchu. We need to depart early so those who wish to climb Huayna Picchu will need to sign up before the 2 hour guided tour. During your visit to these ancient ruins you will see clouds fly past and Machu Picchu will disappear with in them, so make sure you take pictures whilst the ruins are visible. After the tour you will have free time to explore the mountain of Huayna Picchu overlooking all of Machu Picchu - by far the best view! Huayna Picchu will take approximately 2 hours return trip. It is now your choice to enjoy lunch just outside the ruins or take the bus back to AguasCalientes to explore this small and quaint village.
This photograph was captured while on the Lares Trek during my trip to Peru in 2007. The Lares Trek is an alternative to doing the Inca Trail, though, this trek does not lead to Machu Picchu. The Lares Trek is an amazing 3 day hike through the beautiful Peruvian Andean mountains. I came across this little girl on day two of the trek. The day begun at 5:45am and the hiking started at 7:30. Through the day of hiking, we passed a few small villages, bumping into several kids along the way. These kids, for the most part, sit along the trail knowing trekkers are going to pass by eventually. We were advised not to provide them candy or money, but could provide them gifts. I took several pictures of all the kids we bumped into and it was a treat to see their faces after giving them a gift...their faces just lit up as I pulled them out of my bag.
Stacey Addison, the daughter of one of our friends, (Bernie, who traveled with us last year to Peru), has sold her house, her car, etc., and has been traveling around the world. What an adventure, eh? Well, she has encountered a problem. While crossing into East Timor from Indonesia she took a ride in an SUV with several other people, one of whom was carrying drugs. Well, I'll let Stacey explain it:
MY STORY:
After working as a veterinarian for almost ten years I made the decision to sell my house, car and worldly possessions and pursue my dream of traveling around the world. I have been on the road since January 2013.
On September 5, 2014, I crossed the land border from Indonesia into Timor Leste at Batugade. Waiting at the border was an SUV acting as a private shared taxi. I was one of the passengers that paid the driver $10 to take me to Dili, the capital of East Timor. When we arrived in Dili the other gentleman in the car asked to stop at the local DHL office and pick up a package before being dropped off at his hotel. The police had received a tip from the Indonesian authorities that the parcel contained drugs and they were watching the office. After the package was retrieved the police stopped the vehicle and everyone in the car was arrested. We were taken to a police station and I was taken to a separate room where my bags and person were searched. All of my personal medications were tested for drugs and a urine test was performed. All tests and searches were negative. The police apologized and told me they had to search me because I was in the same car, but that they now knew I just got in the wrong car. They drove me to a hotel then came back 1.5 hours later and arrested me. I was held in the Dili Detention Center for four nights then released after an initial hearing. The judge ordered that my passport be held until further investigations have been completed. I have since learned that Timorese law gives the prosecutor's office one year to investigate. No one from the police or prosecutor's office has ever questioned me.
I am not trying to circumvent the judicial system. All I ask is the opportunity to have my voice heard so I can clear my name. I would like to be able to put this behind me as soon as possible.
What is a year of your life worth?

City Tour Cusco Half Day
Our city tour of Cusco includes a visit to the City's Highlights, located in and around Cusco. We start off by visiting the huge "Inca Ceremonial Center of Sacsayhuaman." This enormous structure overlooks the city of Cusco. Its construction is amazing, with huge rocks perfectly aligned. It is said that it took over 10,000 workers and 50 years to build it. The origin of the temple of Sacsayhuaman is still unknown today. The archaeologist attributed its construction to the period of the Inca Pachacutec (in the Inca language Pachacutec means either Cataclysm or He who transforms the world), the man essentially credited with founding the Inca Empire. We will visit another important Inca site known as "Qenqo". This is a place with subterranean passages with carved stone channels in a zigzag pattern. In its inner part there is a carved stone table where it is said to be where the Incas mummified their dead. Next, we will make a short visit to the archaeological Inca site of "Tambomachay", a temple dedicated to the God of Water. After these visits, we will return to Cusco, where we will visit one of the most sacred Inca buildings, "The Temple of Koricancha". Koricancha was the most important temple of the Inca Empire. According to archaeologists it housed over 1000 priests and attendants. Within its walls, religious ceremonies were constant and offerings to the Gods and the Inca's mummies were made each day. Finally we will visit the beautiful "Cathedral" of Cusco. This enormous Cathedral was built in the XVI. It contained nearly 400 colonial paintings, including many from the Cusco School, which was prominent in the 17th century. Among them a painting of the Last Supper by Marcos Zapata, showing Christ and the apostles eating guinea pig (Guinea-pig was the one of the main courses at sacred feasts in Inca times). After our city tour our local guide will drop you off at your hotel.

Sites to Visit:
The Cathedral was built between 1560 and 1664 out of large slabs of red granite taken from the Inca construction of Sacsayhuaman. It houses important collections of gold and silver work of the colonial period, elaborately engraved wooden altars and a beautiful collection of oil on canvas paintings from the Escuela Cusqueña.
Koricancha and the Convent of Santo Domingo
The convent was built on the spectacular Qoricancha ‘site of gold’. This was the most important temple dedicated to the worship of the Sun and whose walls were lined with solid sheets of gold. All that remains now is the fine stonework, the conquistadors took the rest. Coricancha was also an observatory, where priests kept track of major celestial events. Today it houses an impressive collection of canvas paintings from the Escuela Cusqueña.
Sacsayhuaman
Sacsayhuaman (which means ‘satisfied falcon’) is one of the most impressive sites built by the Incas. It is generally referred to as a fortress, however it is not certain what its main function was. Current research suggests that it was more likely to be used as a temple, as Inca tombs have been discovered in the area.
The site is a marvellous archaeological feat, even now after it was destroyed, one can only imagine its greatness when it stood in full glory. The stones in the wall are incredible and the largest weighs in at over 300 tonnes.
The Incas envisioned Cusco as having a puma shape - Sacsayhuaman was the head. The magnificent zigzag walls are the major attraction. The grounds surrounding Sacsayhuaman are still used today for the colourful festival of Inti Raymi which is held on the 24th June every year.
Q'enqo
The site of Q'enqo (meaning ‘zigzag’ or ‘labyrinth’) contains the most impressive carved rocks in the Cusco area. There are carvings everywhere, although some are a little indistinct: a llama, a condor and snakes have been identified. There are many zigzag channels on top of the rock, probably used for pouring sacrificial chicha (a local wine made from maize). Inside the rock there are a number of caves and passageways and an alter which was used for the sacrifices of llamas.
Puka Pukara
Puka Pukara translates to ‘the red fortress’. This is a small site and although the name suggests that it was a fortress, it does not appear to have any defensive purpose.
This site was thought to have been used as a Temple to the Water. There are some very impressive aqueducts, canals and cascades carved in stone, designed to channel water flowing from a nearby stream.

It was a very cold night. So cold that I didn't want to get out of my sleeping bag to go pee in the middle of the night. I also wore everything I had in my backpack just to stay warm. The altitude sickness got to me last night and I almost puked eating popcorn. So I passed on dinner, went back to the tent and went straight to sleep. I woke up feeling much better in the morning.
