I've had my laptop for 3 years, original spec 500MB ram/80GB HD.

Now 2GB ram and a 250GB HD.

Imaged the old C drive with ping which I burned to CD:

ping.windowsdream.com/

It worked like a charm, made a backup image to one of my external usb drives, and wrote it back to the new drive. Then resized etc using partition magic.

It's now running a lot faster, and has plenty of HD space.

Now I can get back to processing the holiday shots.

The new drive hooked up to the external USB adapter and being cloned with Seagate's DiskWizard. Great utility and, best of all, it's free!

This is what you get in the box with the Kingwin EZ-Connect USB external drive adapter.

My new 500GB 2.5inch mobile SATA hard drive, by Seagate. I really like their drives.

The box for the external USB drive adapter I used for this. Worked like a champ! Pretty fast, too.

Before fiddling around on the inside of a laptop, I always recommend that you unplug it and pop the battery off. A stray jolt of juice can ruin fresh hardware. Trust me.

Removal of the factory 256mb RAM stick

The new drive fully installed, with the door still off, and the old hard drive out.

Magnetic screwdriver with a small bit and a Revlon vintage era nail file were my tools of the trade for the RAM install

The door off the access area for the laptop's hard drive.

Install finished and new space recognized. Yay!

The DIMM slot hidden under my keyboard bolted up with 1GB of Crucial Memory

Loading slot 2 with 1GB of Crucial Memory

Removing the screws holding the screen and locking access to DIMM 1

Behold... 2 sticks of 1GB each!

The wretched stick of 256mb of RAM in DIMM 2

Prying for access to DIMM slot 1 buried under the keyboard

Comparing the puny 256mb stick to the 1GB stick
