10′ of 3/4″ PVC tubing, 4 tee and 4 elbow 3/4″ fittings, a hacksaw, some elbow grease and 15 minutes later I got a cool DIY laptop stand, courtesy of Instructables, via Lifehacker.

My chiropractor has been telling me for years that prolonged sitting is the reason for the on and off problems with my body. So no more sitting at my computer, will see if this helps, can't do any harm I'm sure??

This extremely well constructed stand made in China was $67 delivered to my home by Amazon with 2 days, how can the rest of the world compete with this?

This is the DIY Cheapskate Laptop Stand that I created for my home office. Click here to see the stand by itself.

The instructions to build this stand can be seen and downloaded by visiting: The DIY Cheapskate Laptop Stand (the link should be active by 11/12/2008, but please check back if it is not). You can also find two additional inexpensive laptop stands on the blog post if this one is too ugly for your taste (I suppose you could wrap it in some Japanese origami paper or other material if you like).

The laptop stand has held up well so far and served its purpose, which is to raise my laptop monitor height to a comfortable viewing position. It also allows me to use a dual monitor setup in my home office for that extra productivity boost. Also, you can find extra information about my home office by visiting my home office set.

Enjoy!

This is the side view on my lap. It's much more comfortable, and the extra air to the bottom of the machine can't hurt.

i sometimes like to work stood up, and came across a post on instructables with one of these so i made my own. there is a slight wobble but that's due to the cantilever on the tripod that allows you to flip to portrait a small block of wood to steady this and i will have a much more solid feeling desk. it will also be useful as a table for sitting while using the laptop

Simple 4-piece cardboard laptop stand. Raises it 7" total, 6" in the back and 1" in the front. Meant to be used in conjunction with full keyboard.

MBP 15" 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2 GB DDR2 RAM. HP Deskjet 6940, old Logitech trackball. The hydraulic laptop stand is built for an old CRT monitor. The wooden box stand is my own creation for a keyboard. The MacBook Pro is a little too deep for it.

[Update 2/2011: Much different job with different desk set up. Same old keyboard box. Details here.]

This laptop stand was made from four battens, a couple of offcuts of hardboard (in the US - Masonite, I think), a few screws and panel pins, a few pieces of twine to tie on the cables and bits at the back, felt squares to protect the desk, and a few blocks to support the center. Most of the work went into carving out the depressions for the feet.

There is plenty of space for ventilation under the computer, and a platform for storing notes. The transmitter/charger for the mouse is parked up underneath as well. When not in use, the mouse is also stored on this platform.

Tripods are stable and easy to adjust for cameras as well as computers! Tripods can be lightweight and are easy to fold up for travel or just to put away. Because it's meant for travel, I can do this setup anywhere instead of this setup at a friend's house in Virginia. I often workout on my bike or treadmill while watching graduate school lectures online. I find I pay more attention and have fewer distractions. (Who has the desire to check email while biking hard?? Don't answer that, Jay.)
