The same Greater Butterfly-orchid (Platanthera chlorantha) taken this Sunday (left) and week ago (right). The white-greenish inflorescence of these attractive and relatively tall orchids looks spectacular above and within green grasses. Yet, when not in bloom, they are inconspicuous and well blended with surrounded grassland.

Each flower when fully opened resembles a flying butterfly that gives this orchid its common name. This resemblance can be seen from the image taken few years ago. (www.flickr.com/photos/sergeysmirnov/7374490276/). The genus name ‘Platanthera’ means in Greek ‘broad anthers’ with reference to its broadly spaced pollinia, and epithet ‘chloranta’ means ‘green-flowered’. Martin Down NNR, Hampshire, England, UK.

"Zeit" by Rammstein

So perfekt ist der Moment

Doch weiter läuft die Zeit

Augenblick, verweile doch

Ich bin noch nicht bereit

The moment is so perfect

But time goes on

wait a minute

I'm not ready

Every day I've been observing the changes in our sunflower plants. It is beyond grand to study the development of each flower.

I came across this link with a time lapse titled Growing Sunflowers, Seed to Flower in 83 Days. Enjoy!

Norway is one of the best places in the world to see the magical northern lights, in stunning Arctic surroundings. The northern lights can be seen when the sky is clear and dark. Peak time is often between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. Spring (March/April) and autumn (September/October) have the highest level of aurora activity.

It's easy to recognize orographic clouds by their distinctive shape, and it's fascinating to watch them whirl in place during high winds aloft events.

Not all that obvious when watching in real time, but in a time lapse video, their dynamic movement can be seen.

From the back garden again this morning.

Relax for 22 seconds

I thought I would try this.

Had another of those weird time lapses the other day. Happens often when I peruse old photos. I was looking at a series shot back in June that showed the early phase of the local growing season. I couldn't help but think 'what the hell just happened?' Those corn stalks are now well over seven feet tall and ready for harvest. The soy bean plants, verdant green when I took the photo are withered and yellow (and laden with beans). I don't feel one second older than when I stood alongside this tired old country road. But a full quarter of the year has passed in a blur, much like the one before that, and the one about to begin. Autumn begins in the northern hemisphere on Monday the 23rd and it seems incomprehensible to me. Summer always begins with so much hope and optimism. I always think it will last forever, a tendency that started back in childhood. It's a fantasy that has been dashed time and again but I just can't manage to let it go. Yet here I am again standing on the edge of autumn, watching summer memories receding into the rearview mirror or life, along with all of the others. New ones are in store for sure, both good and bad. Situations I can't even imagine. Great photos and stories to go with them. I feel ever more determined to create. Time passes, and the change of season has a way of bookending not just the phases of year but the progression of life as well. At the heart of this all is fear of the clock running down. It's not something that dominates my mind, but it's always there somewhere in the background. Tick-tock.

Sorry uploaded twice by mistake

UPDATE: This video was used in a collaboration with musician Oliver Sadie. The results of this can be seen here: Reffin's Sunrise

Another collaboration will be uploaded soon.

This is my first attempt at a time-lapse film. It is of a sunrise as seen from my bedroom window. Sunrises .... me .... almost a mutually-exclusive concept! :)

The full video (just over 2 mins) can be seen here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvnpAgMF3FQ

Clouds are actually remarkably heavy. With a combination of pressure, air, and water, clouds are carrying much more weight than one might assume. The average cumulus cloud weighs around 1.1 million pounds123. That’s about 500,000 kg3.

Even on a bright, clear day, one must search to find a vantage point to see the sun. This short time-lapse is taken from a rooftop 36 feet above the ground. Even this high, the sun only peeks between the trees on it's horizontal path after rising, skipping through the trees before setting for another long night.

Our solstice day today was 4 hrs 32 minutes. Tomorrow will be 5 seconds longer!
