Maj. Alex Turner Opposing Solo Pilot in front of his No#6 jet of the U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, the Thunderbirds

KLFI (Joint Base Langley-Eustis / Langley AFB) - 23 APR 2016

Jeff Boerboon taxis in front of the audience after an amazing aerobatic flight demonstration in the Jack Link's sponsored "Screamin' Sasquatch" Jet WACO Taperwing biplane at the 2016 Air Power Over Hampton Roads on Saturday.

This aircraft is one of a kind. It started out as a classic 1929 WACO Taperwing.

Beyond the obvious aspect of adding a jet engine, The Screamin’ Sasquatch is highly modified in many ways. Every control surface has been specifically engineered for the unique aerodynamic forces encountered during high-speed flight. Portions of the aircraft’s structure have been converted from wood and fabric, to carbon fiber. The cockpit has been moved 3 feet aft, in order to accommodate fuel tanks for both 100LL and Jet A fuel. The cockpit is extremely modern and incorporates the MGL Avionics Stratomaster Odyssey touch screen system, which integrates all of the engine monitoring of both powerplants and the aircraft’s avionics systems – essentially combining a couple of dozen gauges into one screen.

The Screamin’ Sasquatch, Jack Link’s Jet Waco is powered by dual powerplants: a Pratt & Whitney 985 Radial Engine and a General Electric CJ610 (J85) Jet Engine with 3,000lbs of thrust.

This system allows the plane to achieve feats other stunt planes are unable to do. The aircraft has a thrust-to-weight ratio greater than 1-to-1, allowing it to accelerate going straight up.

There were 61 Pratt & Whitney R-1340-56 powered SNJ-2 aircraft built.

Larry Arken is the commanding officer and flight lead for the GEICO Skytypers. He also is a captain for a major commercial airline. As an adolescent and aspiring aviator, Larry sat in the co-pilot seat flying

over the skies of Long Island and the northeast coast behind his father, Mort Arken. Mort was a former naval aviator whose passion forflying led him to establish the Skytypers as an innovative advertising company typing large dot-matrix style messages near highly attended events and major metropolitan areas. Under Mort, the team also began flying at select air shows. At a young age, Larry saw the potentialto build upon the foundation laid by his

father to create theworld-class organization it has become today.

Larry’s aviation career formed while flying a variety of warbirds and corporate jets. He first flew Falcon 10’s, 20’s and 50’s. He then transitioned to flying DC-8’s for UPS. He later secured a position with American Airlines as a long-term, career pilot.

When not flying large passenger planes for a commercial airlines, he flies vintageP-47, F4U and P-51 warbirds for the Air Power Museum in

Farmingdale,NY. Larry also holds a Natanorth American Trainer Association designation and is a check pilot for formation flying.

As an airline transport pilot, Arken has logged more than 25,000 flight hours and holds certification ratings for seven large jets. Larry has bachelor’s degrees in marketing from St. Johns University and in business from Thomas Edison State University.
