Well look at that. April 18 and the "tundra" is still frozen.

The red fireworks are lighted when the lyrics "and the rocket's red glare" come around. Some newly planted deciduous trees nicely lighted along Lombardi Avenue. The clock on the stadium set to "Lombardi Time", i.e., fifteen minutes fast.

This post at half time - score Packers 21, Bears 27. Here's hoping the Packers can take care of business.

Football is back!

The Packers kick off their season each year with Family Night, during which the fans pay to watch an inter-squad scrimmage/practice. 60,000 fans were in attendance. The evening is capped off with a stadium fireworks display which is such a spectacle, I cannot resist finding a new perspective and photographing each year. No sweat, really. The fireworks started at 9:45pm and I was back home by 10:20 (note that the stadium clock is set to "Lombardi time", i.e. 15 min fast). Such is life in Green Bay, the NFL's smallest market.

At least the hotdogs didn't stink

Besides the hotdogs and the flyover, the other highlight was that the University of Wisconsin marching band performed the national anthem (shown on the field in this image) AND played at halftime.

I wanted to get out for this photo opportunity during the covid time as there are no fans in the stadium and it was relatively easy to get where I wanted to go. A bit erie, though, as normally during a game the area is crawling with people. The City of Green Bay has a population of about 100,000. The seating capacity of Lambeau Field is about 81,000. Thus, Home games are a major event. So quite weird with no people around during a game.

Fireworks are lighted for a Packers touchdown. This one a 2nd qtr score - Aaron Jones 8 Yd Run.

The file info for this image shows it was captured at 8:12. As can be seen in the image the Lambeau clock says 8:27, reflecting "Lombardi Time". In his day, Coach Vince Lombardi expected his players and coaches to be 15 minutes early to meetings and practices. Not “on time”, but 15 minutes early. If they were not 15 minutes early, he considered them to be “late”. Thus, it came to be known as “Lombardi time”. When the clock was added to the stadium in a 2012 improvement project, it was naturally set to "Lombardi Time" as the norm, i.e., 15 minutes fast.

The Packers have the inside track to the Superbowl this year as the number one seed in the NFC. They will play the LA Rams tomorrow (SAT 01-16-21) at Lambeau, with a potential home game conference championship vs. Tampa Bay or New Orleans on the line. Aaron Rogers has never played in a conference championship game at Lambeau. The Packers beat New Orleans during the regular season but got beat by Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Tampa Bay. BUT, let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Green Bay, Wisconsin USA

As most of you know I drove up to Wisconsin on Friday to do some engagement photos for my wifes niece. I ended up spending about 3.5 hours shooting pictures with them in the morning and then met up with my Flickr friend Kathy (SportMom) up in Green Bay. We ended up at Lambeau Field and were hoping to be able to get a view of the field. But we missed the last tour.

All was not lost as there were still some wonderful photo opportunities to be had and we had a wonderful laugh over this employee who was gaurding a set of escalators who couldn't quite believe we had just met (even though we have been 'contacts' for several months) and that I was there with her since I was married. LOL!!

While my photostream is already peppered with images like this one, I cannot NOT go to this event - such a spectacle at an iconic location. I grew up within blocks of Lambeau Field and spent considerable time there as a kid in the late sixties/early seventies - my kid brother and I, in the free-ranging manner of most kids in that day, riding our bikes to watch practices and get autographs of players and coaches.

Lambeau Field is an outdoor athletic stadium in the north central United States, located in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The home field of the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League (NFL), it opened in 1957 as City Stadium, replacing the original City Stadium at East High School as the Packers' home field. Informally known as New City Stadium for its first eight seasons, it was renamed in August 1965 in memory of Packers founder, player, and long-time head coach, Curly Lambeau, who had died two months earlier. The stadium's street address has been 1265 Lombardi Avenue since August 1968, when Highland Avenue was renamed in honor of former head coach Vince Lombardi. It sits on a block bounded by Lombardi Avenue (north); Oneida Street (east); Stadium Drive and Valley View Road (south); and Ridge Road (west). The playing field at the stadium has a conventional north-south alignment, at an elevation of 640 feet (195 m) above sea level. The stadium completed its latest renovation in the summer of 2013 with the addition of 7,000 seats high in the south end zone. About 5,400 of the new seating is general, while the remaining 1,600 seats are club or terrace suite seating. With a capacity of 81,441, Lambeau Field is the fifth-largest stadium in the NFL with standing room, but is fourth in normal capacity. It is now the largest venue in the state, edging out Camp Randall Stadium (80,321) at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Lambeau Field is the oldest continually operating NFL stadium. In 2007, the Packers completed their 51st season at Lambeau, breaking the all-time NFL record set by the Chicago Bears at Wrigley Field (1921–70). (While Soldier Field in Chicago is older, it was not the home of the Bears until 1971.) Only the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park and the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field have longer active home-field tenures in American professional sports.

The Green Bay Packers opened up Training Camp on Wednesday July 23rd.

One of the best, if not the best tradition of any training camp in the NFL is the bike ride from Lambeau Field to the Ray Nitscke Field for practice.

Kids will line up with their bikes hours before practice starts and players and coaches will ride their bikes across the street.

Pictured is new Packers linebacker Isaiah Simmons. The Packers acquired Simmons via free agency this past offseason on a 1 year contract.

Simmons was originally drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in 2020 with the 8th overall pick in the 1st round.

Simmons has played 5 seasons in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants playing both the linebacker position and safety position.

In 84 career NFL games Simmons has collected 329 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 5 interceptions and 2 defensive touchdowns.

Simmons figures to make the final cut on the 53 man roster. Early reports from training camp are promising.
