Beautiful in all weather. Apart from in the torrential rain we had the following day...

Eight years ago I took a hike with a Flickr pal around the Kentmere Horseshoe. What a day this was. There was plenty of snow, at times far too much wind and visibility came and went. We only came across one other couple of hikers all day and they are seen here. They turned around at near enough this point. They are seen battling the elements during the final stretch of ascent to the summit of Ill Bell.

Believe it or not this is a colour photograph.

Ennerdale had an impressive grandeur that day. Beneath the brooding clouds there was a compelling magic in the air that delayed my progress....why hurry.

...but not at the top of Helvellyn! Nice views out to the Pennines though.

Castlerigg is one of the earliest British stone circles built in about 3000 BC during the Neolithic. Great location with the mountains of Helvellyn and High Seat as a backdrop.

Jack's Rake is a scramble that takes you diagonally up and across the cliff face of Pavey Ark (top right). Burned in my memory as we did it on a school trip during a snowy Easter holiday. Not sure it would be allowed these days.

Not lonely for long though. His big brother joined us shortly after.

Looking west from Crinkle Crags to the Irish Sea. Looks like a nice day out there on the coast!

"We don't always have to walk up mountains" I said to the missus.....next thing I knew we were walking around Derwent Water. 9.5 miles and every step a pleasure.

An essentially man-made scene at the end of Haweswater. The valley of Mardale was flooded to make way for the reservoir in 1935. However, the passage of time has transformed this to a classic Lakeland view.

Getting into the water and zooming into something interesting was the aim of this shot, cracking little waterfall situated in the Lake District.

Grasmere as early autumn approached with an ephemeral mist allowing views across the lake occasionally and a bit of framing thrown in! I haven't looked at these files for while, disappointed by the "new camera syndrome". In my ignorance I'd left my shiny new camera in crop mode giving me less than half the potential pixels it is capable of! Discovered this on the last day of the trip of course! There are still some images, however, that I've come round to enjoying and can still get an A3 print so all is not lost.

This view was taken a little higher up from the northern slopes of Barrow. By now the low laying mist was starting to clear but for the time being it remained thick over the top end of Derwent Water.

We had a Gentleman’s day out over the lakes yesterday.

The weather was great along with the company. Our first stop was the Duke of Portland boathouse, as we parked the car I noticed another photographer already in the water, it turned out to be Matt Walker from work, he had camped there overnight. The sun was high in the sky at this point so it gave me a chance to use the Lee Big Stopper filter for a change.

The rather intimidating appearance of the ridge should not deter an active walker. From 1000ft upwards there is a succession of little rocky steps, but nothing difficult. The view in retrospect is superb. There are no problems of route selection and no risk of going astray. A beautiful climb. Do it.

Where did autumn go? It all seems to happen too quickly. This image harks back to some lovely light and early colour around Rydal Water.
