Tsukubai water basin for ritual purification and bamboo ladle. Gardens of Koto-in, a sub-temple of Daitoku-ji, Kyoto Japan

High key

This elegant lady from Ototo floats in your soup. Like a real ballerina, this soup ladle stays upright. The ladle does have a bit of a boastful look, hence the matching name Swan-ky :) (swan and boastful).

Water used in shrines for ritual purification. Bamboo ladle in this case for decoration as it has a large hole in it!

Context for the spoon smiles picture for the SOS theme. But, I may end up using this one for the actual posting!!

Hmmm, I learned: that if you want to do spoon reflection pictures, you need to have a shiny unused spoon, with no scratches! And you need to take a gazillion before you find one that kind of works. And you can inadvertently capture yourself depending upon the angle.

A ladle is a specialized spoon, and this one, a gravy ladle, can pour from both sides.

This is an optical illusion created by blurring:

You are looking through the holes of a flat skimmer ladle onto the blue glitter foam rubber underneath. I focused on the edges of the bokeh until a 3D effect was created and it looked like spheres : ))

In the first comment you can see a photo of the ladle and foam rubber

There was a group that I joined when I first started on Flickr called the 100 Possibilities Project, wherein you chose one object and posted 100 different pictures of it. I had a ball doing that with this pretty blue glass. ‘Round about #80, though, it started to get tougher. I even used to take it on “field trips” and one day I found a huge piece of earth moving equipment and I put the glass on its tracks!!

"Sacred water"

The Water Fountain Contraption (a.k.a. Temizuya)

At the entrance of Japanese Shinto shrines, you'll find a water fountain like thing that has ladles made out of bamboo or wood laid out on it (see above). It's called a temizuya, and the whole point of it is to clean and purify your body by washing your hands and your mouth. Here's the process:

Step 1: Pick up the ladle with your right hand and scoop up some water from the top portion.

Step 2: Pour a third of the water into your left hand and wash it first. Swap the ladle into your left hand, and then pour another third of the water into your right hand and proceed to wash it. All of this should be occurring in the bottom part of the temizuya, not where you initially scooped the water.

Step 3: Now that your hands are clean, you'll need to wash your mouth. Pass the ladle back into your right hand, and then (hopefully you have some water left) pour some water into your left hand. With the water in your left hand, bring your hand to your mouth and rinse with the water, finally spitting into the little area on the ground. Whatever you do, just don't put your mouth directly to the ladle, or spit back into the top area where you drew the water.

Step 4: Finally, you need to wash the ladle for the next person. To do this, draw some more water into the ladle, and now holding it with both hands, tilt the ladle scoop side up so that water falls down the handle and onto your hands. This essentially cleans the ladle, your hands, and the handle. You're now all set to make your way to the shrine itself.

Archaeological Park Carnuntum - Austria

Carnuntum was a Roman army camp on the Danube in the Noricum province and after the 1st century the capital of the Pannonia Superior province, with 50,000 people. Its remains are situated in Lower Austria halfway between Vienna and Bratislava on the "Archaeological Park Carnuntum", extending over the area of 10 km² near today's villages Petronell-Carnuntum and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. (Wikipedia)

Original, almost 2000 years old, Roman kitchenware.

Thank you all for your ongoing support and sparks of inspiration, it never goes unnoticed and I am grateful!

Soup au pistou. Mediterranean Vegetable Soup

(Similar to Ribollita Soup)

5 tablespoons olive oil

1 onion, chopped

1 carrot, chopped

1 celery stalk, chopped

1 small fennel bulb, trimmed and chopped

1 tablespoon minced garlic

Salt and ground black pepper (Optional: cayenne pepper)

2 small zucchinis, sliced

1 15-ounce can whole peeled tomatoes

4 cups vegetable stock or water

2 cups cooked or canned cannellini beans

2 Tbsp pesto

-1 pound chopped spinach, kale or escarole (sauté before serving)

-4 large, thick slices whole-grain bread, toasted

Heat 2 tablespoons of the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add onion, carrot, celery fennel and garlic; sprinkle with salt and pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are soft, about 10 minutes.

Drain the beans; if they’re canned, rinse them as well. Add them and the zucchinis to the pot along with tomatoes and their juices and stock, pesto, rosemary and thyme.

Bring to a boil, then reduce heat so the soup bubbles steadily; cover and cook, stirring once or twice, 15 to 20 minutes.

Before serving, sauté spinach, or kale, or escarole, in olive oil .

Ladle soup on top of spinach…

Serve with warm crusty bread.

The day has been hot and the locos side doors flap open keeping its internals from overheating and the slag is hot.
