Goosander or Common Merganser with babies in Pangong lake in summer months, Ladakh, India, Asia

The Himalayan marmot (Marmota himalayana) is a marmot species that inhabits alpine grasslands throughout the Himalayas and on the Tibetan Plateau.

These medium-sized caprids are 115 to 165 cm (45 to 65 in) long along the head-and-body, with a tail of 10 to 20 cm (3.9 to 7.9 in). They stand 69 to 91 cm (27 to 36 in) high at the shoulder. Body mass can range from 35 to 75 kg (77 to 165 lb). Males are slightly larger than females. Dense coat is slate grey in colour, sometimes with a bluish sheen. The underparts and backs of the legs are white, while the chest and fronts of the legs are black. Separating the grey back and white belly is a charcoal-colored stripe.

A High Pass In Ladhak!

The Himalayas are the highest mountain chain in the world and its

great height and complex geologic structure has a history that is most

amazing.

They were formed about 55 million years ago as a result of

plate-tectonic forces ( leakage of magma from the core of the earth

and its build up that makes land masses move) when the current

landmass of India moved from well below the south of the equator and

collided with the Eurasian land mass and the impact led to the

formation of these massive structures as the India plate got subsumed

under the Eurasian plate near the impact zone

The Himalayas are not merely a geographical feature, a range of

mountains; they epitomize a

people’s civilisational identity that goes back to the dawn of

history. For the whole of India and its Hindu ethos the mountains are

what is life for they provide the glacial melt and water that decide

the weather and climate of the whole land mass. All Gods reside in the

Himalayas and it is there that a Hindu must go to meet the maker.

In fact new theories suggest that the event 55 million years ago may

have also set the global climate change into motion.

Global climate began to cool around 55 million years ago, and

scientists theorize that this may have been driven by weathering

reactions in the Himalaya that removed carbon dioxide from the

atmosphere, decreasing the greenhouse effect and cooling Earth.

Now we are seeing a change at the other extreme with global warming

taking place thanks mainly to the years of sustained pollution coming

in from the developed countries and fresh accreations from the

developing ones. When Africa starts contributing to it then I guess

the birth of Himalayas may get its negation.

Approximately 60% of the length of the lake lies in China. The lake is 5 km (3.1 mi) wide at its broadest point. All together it covers 604 km2. During winter the lake freezes completely, despite being saline water. It is not a part of Indus river basin area and geographically a separate land locked river basin.[3]

The lake is in the process of being identified under the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance.

RITRATTO DI BAMBINO RIFUGIATO TIBETANO IN LADAKH

PORTRAIT OF A TIBETAN REFUGEE CHILD IN LADAKH

Commento musicale: Leh Ladakhi Folk Songs

Located 150 kilometers North of Leh, Hunder, sitting at an average altitude of 10, 000 feet, is a small village where the Shyok River meets Nubra River. Hunder lies on the ancient silk route, once an important international trade route. Today it is one of the most strategic points located close as it is to the Siachen Glacier, the world highest battle ground between India and Pakistan.
